- Guthred is grateful to valiant warrior Uthred, who unmasks the allegedly loyal men sent by Kjaltran, and spares the single sincere convert Sihtric. Uthred having been observed by a monk making love to Guthred's sister Gisela, suspicious ingrate abbot Eadred, who wants peace with Erik and Siegfried, convinces Guthred to seek a truce with the Danes by handing over Uthred.
