During Alfred the Great's rule, he issued a legal code containing 120 chapters. At the beginning of the Code he translated the 10 Commandments, parts of Exodus, and the Apostolic letter from Acts of the Apostles all into Old English. However, he made no efforts to reform the church during his lifetime. Alfred did create two new monasteries in Wessex, the first in over two centuries. He brought in foreign monks as well. To equate Alfred with Henry VIII or James is a gross misrepresentation of history.
