It’s a slow week for new releases, both in theaters and at home. “Are You There, God? It’s Me, Margaret” deserves to be an Oscar contender — let’s get Rachel McAdams‘ supporting-actress campaign started pronto — but you’ll have to leave the couch to see that one. Without venturing to the multiplex, you can catch two favorites from the Oscars’ most recent shortlists and two new movies with very different sensibilities.
This contender to watch this week: “Moonage Daydream”
“David Bowie: The Last Five Years,” released in 2017, focused on the final chapter in the glam rocker’s storied career. “Moonage Daydream” is about what came before. The film made last year’s Oscar shortlist but was left out when nominations were announced, surprising many who thought this kaleidoscopic profile would be a shoo-in for Best Documentary Feature. Brett Morgan, who also directed the stylish “Kurt Cobain: Montage of Heck,...

David Bowie, let him rest in peace, will be the subject of a new HBO feature in 2018, and the trailer is just the right kind of push that is needed to give people what they might want to see. For such an iconic and awesome individual there could be nothing less than a tribute to the greatness that he represented and the struggle he went through during the last year or so of his life. During the last five years of his career however Bowie went through a kind of resurgence that saw him return to the public eye

Trailers are an under-appreciated art form insofar that many times they’re seen as vehicles for showing footage, explaining films away, or showing their hand about what moviegoers can expect. Foreign, domestic, independent, big budget: What better way to hone your skills as a thoughtful moviegoer than by deconstructing these little pieces of advertising? This week […]

If you're a fan of rock and roll legend David Bowie, HBO has a new documentary coming out called David Bowie: The Last Five Years and today we have the first trailer for you to watch! The film chronicles the last five year of Bowie's life, the evolution of his music, and it puts a focus on his final two albums, which are "The Next Day" from 2013, and "Blackstar", which was released in 2016, Bowie's 69th birthday, just two days before his death. The doc will also touch on the rock stage musical "Lazarus", which he barely completed before he passed away.
As a long time fan of Bowie, this is a film I'm very much looking forward to watching. It looks like it will be a moving tribute to the legendary rock star.

If anyone knows how difficult actors can be, it’s Clint Eastwood. Maybe that’s why he chose to cast non-actors in his latest directorial effort, “The 15:17 to Paris,” which recently released a dramatic new trailer worthy of its clunky title. Returning to ground he found fertile in 2016’s “Sully,” Eastwood depicts the true story of passengers on a French train who overtook an armed terrorist in 2015, preventing a potential mass shooting. Eastwood cast many of the real passengers to play themselves in the movie, including three Americans: Anthony Sadler, Alek Skarlatos, and Spencer Stone.

Prolific up until his the very end, David Bowie is a model to so many artists precisely because he never stopped evolving. “David Bowie: The Last Five Years,” a new documentary from HBO, will chronicle the musician’s final projects, battle with cancer, and creative process. In the newly released trailer, the film promises archival footage, interviews with close friends and collaborators, and nuggets of wisdom from the man himself.
Aspiring musicians will no doubt be moved by Bowie’s indefatigable creative spirit. In one interview, he lays out one of his artistic tenets: “Always go a little further into the water than you feel you’re capable of being in. And when you don’t feel that your feet are quite touching the bottom, you’re just about at the right place to do something exciting.”

TWC has once again enlisted attorney David Boies to aid their legal battle, as they did when “Bully” likewise received a controversial R rating; the company successfully brought the anti-bullying documentary’s rating down to a PG-13 in that case.

The video for David Bowie‘s last single “Lazarus” — released days before the late singer lost his 18-month battle with cancer — hauntingly referred to death and rebirth. And in a new documentary about the 69-year-old music legend, the video’s director reveals Bowie learned his cancer was terminal while filming the video.
David Bowie: The Last Five Years, which premieres on British television Saturday, covers the final years of Bowie’s life — including his 2003-4 A Reality Tour, and the making of his 25th (and final) studio album Blackstar.
Directed by Francis Whately, it’s a follow-up to the 2013 documentary David Bowie: Five Years.

Jonah Renck, the director of the music video for Bowie’s single “Lazurus,” told the Guardian that the concept of the video was conceived before Bowie knew his cancer was terminal, and that it was his idea — not Bowie’s — to have the singer lie in a hospital bed for the video.
