According to popular belief, Spanish explorer Juan Ponce de León (1474-1521) sought the Fountain of Youth during his expedition to Florida. There is, however, no contemporary evidence to support the story, which all modern historians call a myth. It was only after his death that legends connecting Ponce de León to the Fountain of Youth began.
Although journalist Cherry is correct (about 10 minutes in) that the "león" means "lion" in Spanish, the surname Ponce de León actually refers to the medieval Kingdom of León, with its capital the city of León, which was named not for the lion but for the Roman legion which founded it. The Regnum Legionense was originally the headquarters of the Seventh Roman Legion (Legio VII) during the Late Roman Empire.
In 1513, explorer Ponce de León led the first known European expedition to La Florida, which he named during his first voyage to the area. After landing somewhere along Florida's east coast, he charted the Atlantic coast down to the Florida Keys and north along the Gulf coast.
Terence Myers says he has "touched the face of God" during his rocket flight. This is an anachronistic reference to a famous Canadian sonnet. "High Flight (An Airman's Ecstasy)" is the one well-known poem by John Gillespie Magee (1922-41), an American fighter pilot who served in the Royal Canadian Air Force. The final lines are: "...And, while with silent, lifting mind I've trod The high untrespassed sanctity of space, Put out my hand, and touched the face of God."
