Another quirkily funny episode of Portlandia, kicking off the final season of the show. Like many Portlandia episodes and skits we have a parody of 21st century society, especially of superficial, virtue-signalling types.
The highlight of this episode is the multi-scene skit on Riot Spray, an anti-establishment/punk band Fred (as Spyke) and three friends formed in their teens/early-20s. 20-30 years later he gets the band back together. Things initially seem to go well but he soon discovers that the other three moved on with their lives while he is still stuck in the naively-rail-against-everything viewpoint that he had in his youth.
A great examination of the naivety of youth and how as you grow up you know more and the things you rail against start to make sense. The skit was already great but what lifts this to next-level greatness is the composition of the band: Henry Rollins on vocals, Krist Novoselic (of Nirvana) on bass and Brendan Canty (of Fugazi) on bass, plus Fred/Spyke on guitar. Quite the supergroup.
