“The Neighborhood” creator, producer and showrunner Jim Reynolds has exited the show amid concerns over his leadership style.
According to a source familiar with the situation, CBS Studios had received negative feedback about Reynolds’ abilities as a leader and manager, some of which related to cultural issues, including from two Black writers who recently left the show. The series, which stars Cedric the Entertainer and Max Greenfield, is described by the studio as centering on “the nicest guy in the Midwest who moves his family into a tough neighborhood in L.A. where not everyone appreciates his extreme neighborliness.”
Studio execs had initiated a conversation with Reynolds about a leadership change, per the source — and the showrunner ultimately agreed that stepping down was in the best interest of the series. No Hr investigation was opened in relation to his departure. Season 3 of “The Neighborhood,” which in February been renewed for Season 4, has wrapped filming.

Exclusive: Netflix has given an eight-episode series order to Merry Happy Whatever, a holiday-themed multi-camera comedy series starring and executive produced by Dennis Quaid. The project hails from former Everybody Loves Raymond executive producer Tucker Cawley, Aaron Kaplan’s Kapital Entertainment and Wendi Trilling’s TrillTV. Top multi-camera helmer Pam Fryman is set and direct.
In Merry Happy Whatever, written by Cawley, Dennis Quaid plays Don Quinn, a strong-willed patriarch who must balance the demands of his complicated family with the stress of the Christmas season when his youngest daughter comes home for the holidays with a new boyfriend.
The project is envisioned as a potential anthology series. The first season takes place over the week or so around Christmas, with future seasons possibly exploring other holidays.
Cawley serves as showrunner and executive produces Merry Happy Whatever with Quaid, Fryman, Kapital Entertainment’s Kaplan and Dana Honor and TrillTV’s Trilling.
With the order for Merry Happy Whatever, Kaplan has 11 series on the air including three at Netflix, along with Santa Clarita Diet, which is heading into Season 3, and Indian anthology drama series Delhi Crime, which the streaming network recently picked up with a two-season order.
Cawley wrote Merry Happy Whatever on spec, which was developed at Netflix, with Kapital coming on board. The project expands Cawley’s relationship with Kapital after serving as writer/consulting producer on the company’s breakout ABC freshman drama A Million Little Things. It also marks the latest collaboration between Kapital, TrillTV and Fryman, who was director/executive producer on their CBS series 9Jkl and serves in the same capacity on Kapital’s CBS comedy pilot Carol’s Second Act starring Patricia Heaton. On Netflix, Fryman is a director on the One Day at a Time reboot. Meanwhile, Trilling worked closely with Tucker during her tenure as head of comedy at CBS and his stint on Everybody Loves Raymond and other series for the network.
Quaid is the latest veteran movie star to headline a Netflix comedy series, joining Grace & Frankie‘s Jane Fonda and Lily Tomlin and The Kominsky Method‘s Michael Douglas and Alan Arkin. On TV, he previously toplined Fortitude, The Art of More and Vegas and stars opposite Billy Bob Thornton on the upcoming third season of Amazon’s Goliath.
Quaid’s recent big-screen credits include A Dog’s Purpose and I Can Only Imagine, and he next will be seen starring in Sony’s The Intruder and in Universal’s A Dog’s Journey. He is repped by Wme and Hansen Jacobson.
Cawley, who won a writing Emmy for Everybody Loves Raymond, served as an executive producer on CBS’ The Odd Couple. He is repped by CAA and attorney Patti Felker.
Fryman, who also is directing CBS’ comedy pilot Carol’s Second Act, from another Raymond alum, Mike Royce, is repped by ICM Partners and attorney Holmes Weinberg.

9Jkl co-creator/executive producer Dana Klein has reunited with series’ executive producers, Aaron Kaplan, Wendi Trilling and Dana Honor, and studio, CBS TV Studios, for another multi-generational, multi-camera comedy, which has landed at CBS with a put pilot commitment.
Written by Klein, The Squeeze centers on a married couple that struggles to take care of both dependent children and dependent parents.
Klein executive produces with Kapital Entertainment’s Kaplan and Honor and TrillTV’s Trilling as well as Big Talk’s Kenton Allen and Matthew Justice. Kapital Entertainment and CBS TV Studios produce.
This is the latest collaboration between Klein and Kaplan. The four previous comedy projects that the two teamed on, Daddy’s Girls, Friends with Better Lives, The Perfect Stanleys and 9Jkl, all went to pilot and two, Friends with Better Lives and 9Jk, were picked up to series. Friends alumna Klein is repped by UTA and attorney Jamie Mandelbaum.

The new CBS comedies “The Neighborhood” and “Happy Together” debuted on Monday night, with the former show putting up solid ratings numbers and the latter failing to find much of an audience.
“The Neighborhood” kicked things off at 8 p.m. with a 1.3 rating in adults 18-49 and 8.1 million viewers. “Happy Together” followed at that up at 8:30 with a 1.0 and 5.9 million viewers. By comparison, both of this year’s CBS freshman Monday comedies opened lower than those that debuted last year. “9Jkl” opened to a 1.6 and 8.2 million viewers, while “Me, Myself, and I” drew a 1.6 and 7.5 million. In fairness, both of last year’s shows had the advantage of initially airing on the same night as “The Big Bang Theory,” whereas “The Neighborhood” had no such lead-in.
Later on CBS, “Magnum P.I.” was down 25% in the demo and around 22% in total viewers from its premiere last week. “Bull” was down...

Upfronts season has come and gone, and that means broadcast networks have canceled many a show to make room for their newly-ordered series (Or because their lead star sent out a racially-charged tweet that received immediate backlash). But not every program that got the ax went out with bad Nielsen numbers. Here’s a look at the highest-rated shows didn’t make the cut for the 2018-19 slate… unless they were saved by NBC. Ratings are based on Nielsen’s “most current” data stream, which includes a week’s worth of delayed viewing where available. Least-viewed is first, most-watched last. And, yes, there are ties.

What’s in a name? It could be a TV show’s destiny. The name of a TV series could make or break it, depending on if viewers are even willing to give it a chance. It’s a foot in the door, and sometimes that foot will get slammed if the audience is put off by its title. Remember “$#*! My Dad Says,” “Gcb,” or “The Knights of Prosperity”? There’s a reason you don’t.
For the 2017 Fall TV season, IndieWire called out four shows — “9Jkl,” “The Orville,” “Ten Days in the Valley,” and “Wisdom of the Crowd” — for their poor title choices. Of the lot, only “The Orville” survives, which may be more of a testament to the love for Seth Macfarlane and his specific brand of humor mixed with a love of “Star Trek.” Oddly enough, “The Orville” was probably the worst title of them all. Updated with Living Biblically’s cancellation: No surprise here — there will be no second seasons for CBS’ freshman series 9Jkl, Me, Myself & I, Living Biblically and Wisdom Of the Crowd. Neither series was expected to be renewed. All have been either pulled from the schedule or moved or not ordered for Back Nine.
Of the four, the only series that still had a pulse was 9Jkl, co-created by Mark Feuerstein and Dana Klein inspired by Feuerstein’s real-life experiences. The series was a modest but relatively steady ratings performer throughout the season. It launched to a so-so 8.2 million viewers and a 1.6 in adults 18-49 (Live+Sd) behind Big Bang on Monday and ended its four-week run in the Monday 8:30 Pm slot with a 1.4 in the demo and 7.2 million viewers. Since moving to the 9:30 Pm berth with no Big Bang on Monday, 9Jkl posted a 0.8 in 18-49. In L...
