Not quite a cracker of a season finale, still one of the better episodes of Season 12
TheLittleSongbird18 June 2017
In its prime (Seasons 1-5, with Season 4 to me being the best and most consistent season with a lot of classic episodes and even the weakest episodes being far from awful) 'Criminal Minds' was one of my favourite shows. From Season 6 it did become hit and miss, with the odd gem and still some good episodes, but a lot of average episodes and some stinkers.

Although some may disagree, to me, Season 12 has been patchy and inconsistent but turned out better than expected. The overall season had its faults, such as Garcia's too hostile treatment of Alvez, Hotch going due to Thomas Gibson's controversial firing, the mostly bland character of Stephen Walker, some episodes suffering from a lack of balance in who and what to focus on resulting in a few cases not registering and team members being underused and despite starting off so promisingly Reid in prison got far too dragged out over the season, did start running out of ideas and not helped by the character of Wilkins and his gratuitously and up to now unexplained cruel treatment of Reid. In its favour, the season has also featured the touchingly done subplot between Reid and his mother, the welcome return of Emily Prentiss, masterclass acting from Matthew Gray Gubler in quite a few episodes of the series, Alvez fitting in surprisingly nicely (considering the show's track record of new characters), "Mirror Image" being one of the few times where Lewis and Aisha Tyler's acting making a positive impression, the first three Reid in prison episodes being harrowing, shocking and poignant and some brilliant team interaction.

Although there were disappointments in Season 12, such as "True North", "The Anti-Terror Squad", "Hell's Kitchen" and "Taboo", most of Season 12's episodes have ranged from above average to good. Some episodes even have been very good, with although not quite a cracker "Red Light" being one of the best episodes of the season along with "Green Light", "Elliot's Pond", "Mirror Image" and especially "Spencer".

Not everything in "Red Light" works, the two main faults being the very implausibly far-fetched pregnancy story and the rushed and anti-climactic ending. Personally also thought that the touted return of Morgan could have been more, nice to see him again but other than how he interacts with the rest of the team and how they react to him he is not given enough to do beyond that.

However, visually, the episode looks great as to be expected. Very well shot and lit and is overall stylish, gritty, classy and atmospheric, with at times a film noir look and feel. The music is moody in the haunting and melancholic sense and fits well, without either enhancing or distracting from it. The direction is alert, tense and accommodating.

The acting all round is very good, with the standouts being an as always superb Matthew Gray Gubler and Aubrey Plaza on dynamite form as Cat. Their chemistry and Cat's mind-games are easily what makes "Red Light" as good as it is and a very fond reminder as to why the previous season's "Entropy" was one of the best 'Criminal Minds' episodes in years. One of "Red Light's" highlight scenes is the dating fantasy.

As hoped, the team interaction is brilliant with everybody having plenty to do, a great job is done showing concern for Reid (as does the viewer) and solving the case. The script is thought-provoking and some of the best and most taut writing of the season, while the story is gripping with things that you don't see coming and even more of a nail-biter than the previous episode "Green Light". Finally a much-needed reason is given for Wilkins' cruel treatment of Reid inside, though it doesn't stop one from still hating the character and you are left thinking he treated Reid like that for that reason?

In summary, not a cracker as one would like from a season finale but one of the better faring episodes of Season 12 and a very good episode on the whole. 8/10 Bethany Cox

Excellent finale
LoveIsAStateOfMind22 October 2017
Warning: Spoilers
After a very mediocre season, this show managed to save itself in my estimation with a strong trifecta of episodes wrapping up the season-long Cat Adams/Mexico/Reid In Prison arc and bringing Scratch back into play.

It takes a special kind of serial killer to go toe-to-toe with Spencer Reid's ridiculously high IQ and Cat Adams is the only one to have ever come close. I liked their battle of intelligence and kudos to whoever thought of the escape into her imagination to vary the setting from the grey prison to the luxurious ballroom.

Cat and Lindsey being in an explosive hitwomen lesbian love affair certainly explains their connection and why Lindsey was willing to go to the lengths she did to frame Reid. The whole thing started to take a dark twisty turn with the whole "pregnant with Reid's baby" thing – I loved Prentiss's explosion of "Are you kidding me?!" because that's exactly what I thought! I didn't think the show would take it that far and I was glad when my suspicions were confirmed that it was actually the prison guard's baby.

As ever the friendship between Reid and JJ is one of the things I love the most about the show and it was right that she was the one to accompany him through one of the toughest mental battles he ever had to endure, and be there to reassure him that prison hadn't turned him into the monster he feared he had become.

After all the build-up Lindsey surrendered rather too quickly for my liking in the end, no doubt to save time to set up Season 13's plot arc of the reappearance of Scratch. We got to enjoy a lovely reunion between Reid and his Mum quickly followed by Morgan's appearance. It was good to see him again but I am a bit miffed that it was clear that he hadn't been keeping in touch with the team. I mean I know that the BAU have had a lot going on this season but there's no way that Garcia and Morgan wouldn't have been in constant contact even if just through phone calls and texts.

Bringing Morgan back to share a text message was a bit of a wasted opportunity. I can only guess the writers decided to do it since Shemar's SWAT show got picked up and knowing that they wanted to bring him back at some point, they felt they had to do it now or miss the window.

Anyway, it was enough to trigger the now exhausted team into action and cue the epic car crash and season finale cliffhanger that Criminal Minds is known for.

Never since Season 3 has the fate of so many team members been up in the air. Unlike that finale which was a real tizzy, I am guessing due to casting news which has come out since the finale that the only one in real danger of dying is Walker.

and absolutely brilliant ending to a well written season.

Warning: Spoilers
This episode was literally a masterpiece and absolutely one of the bests episodes of the entire show. With all the changes in casts and after being on air for 12 straight years it's difficult to make the audience exited and yet writers managed to create a story line which was different and new. New cast members such as Luke Alvez are now considered as a family member to the team. Cat Adam's return was something we were all hoping for cause like Red Light, Entropy was one of the best episodes of Criminal minds. Reid being in prison was different for all of us and we all knew he deserved better but this different story line and an absolute brilliant ending to that was a need for Criminal minds to be as good as it use to be with Thomas Gibson (aka Aaron Hotchner) and Shemar Moore (Derek Morgan). Matthew Grey Gubler was also as amazing as he always was and his acting was better than ever. With all the changes yet season 12 was one of my favorites because of its uniqueness in the plot. Well done dear writers. Can't wait for season 13.

Well done to a fabulous season

Loved this episode. It delivered on everything. I have really enjoyed this arc and it didn't disappoint. I'm a very loyal fan and I think the new characters have been delivered really well. I like the relationship between Garcia and Luke. With Morgan leaving she needed a new chemistry and I think the writers got this right. It wouldn't have worked to mirror her relationship with Morgan. Some great acting from MGG. I love his character.

I will continue to watch and enjoy CM. The odd dull episode or arc doesn't phase me. It's still a great show and I feel ywith the many changes in season 12 it has finally evolved and for the better. It couldn't stay as it was. Thank you to the writers for giving it a wake up. It was getting tired - although still very good.

Smashing return of Aubrey Plaza as Cat
lor_11 May 2017
IMDb needs to implement a screening algorithm to combat fake voting by trolls, as evidenced by the numerous lowest rating (1) applied to this fabulous "Criminal Minds" episode. Return of psychopath Cat Adams as brilliantly played by Aubrey Plaza is an occasion for fans of the long- running hit to rejoice.

Just as she did a year ago, Aubrey is memorable in her cat & mouse interplay with hero Gubler, a riveting 2-person acting ensemble worthy of showing in actors' classes for analysis and insight into how great performing can be adapted to the Boob Tube. This made for exciting television, and was less claustrophobic than their initial face-off, enhanced by the fantasy world of a glamorous tete a tete dinner provided by imaginative director/series honcho Glenn Kershaw.

Cliffhanger sort of finale with the heralded return of Shemar Moore was icing on the cake, perhaps a bit hokey in emphasizing the charisma of the beloved co-star of yesteryear (his extended walk-off as if heading down a Men's Fashion Week runway) but satisfying nonetheless. Let's hope he (and later on Aubrey) won't be a stranger in future -the fans must be served.

Two of the best, hands down...
jendarden6 December 2019
Warning: Spoilers
Two of the absolute best episodes of Criminal Minds are the two meetings of the minds of Matthew Gray Gubler (Spencer Reid) and Aubrey Plaza (Cat). The first took place in a semi-posh restaurant and this second one which while taking place in a dreary prison is transformed to a dreamlike setting in a classy ballroom with Spencer and Cat the only two present. Something about the chemistry between the two characters is mesmerizing, as believable as if the two have known each other for years. No question if they were cast in a romantic thriller they would set the screen on fire. The match of these two wits and wills is unrivaled by any other episodes of this entire series. There's a lot more to the story but I could not resist commenting on this one aspect. The push-pull of the verbal match along with the apparent steam between the two is irresistible. That's my story and I'm stickin' to it!! Rock on, you two!!

Red Light

Warning: Spoilers
The Cat Adams thing went off the rails far too quickly, but the show wisely did not devote the entire episode to it. Bringing back Scratch and ending on a To Be Continued is a bad idea though.

Weak cliffhangers are not going to revive this show's fanbase, it needs to stick to getting back to interesting cases.

Total crap

Warning: Spoilers
Omnipotent criminals. Judges, FBI officials and judges ho ignore facts and an agents basic human rights. This whole story arc is total BS. It's a wonder the whole unit wouldn't quit when this is over. I stopped watching this show for two years because of this utter stupidity.

The most nonsensical episode so far
robbegoetmaeckers16 August 2023
Warning: Spoilers
I've recently started rewatching criminal minds. And this episode is crammed with the worst most nonsensical writing so far. None of the characters have realistic dialogue, motivations are all over the place, and the plot is nonsensical unrealistic drivel full of dated boring "shock reveals" that amount to nothing. This episode literally contains "surprise baby", "sudden betrayal", "it was me all along" and "surprise cameo" cliches in 3minutes of screentime. If you told me the entire writing staff forgot to write a finally and drunkenly slurred this out while filming I would believe it.

I'm flabbergasted that this episode got good reviews and am going to peg it on Audrey Plazas presence.

Decent finale to a subpar season.
j_cary8828 August 2021
Warning: Spoilers
First of all, Garcia might just be the most obnoxious person on TV. I really didn't think she'd make it throughout the whole series, and unfortunately, the best people like Gideon and even Hotch disappear, but she always remained. She brings down most scenes she's in by her insanely overacting and annoying personality.

Though I felt like a few previous episodes in the Reid in prison-arc were better than this one, this one has suspense and mystery throughout, and the whole thing is all about Reid/his mom, and it's not divided by an unrelated case. I felt like it would of been a better episode without the ending of it. I liked the surprise of Morgan coming back briefly, but it felt kind of wasted just having him show up for one text at the very end of it. So overall this episode, like season 12 in general, was a mixed bag. I'd still recommend it.
