A Great but frustrating Season 1
B_special25 January 2019
Before I say anything about this series, I should tell you all that I have already read the book before watching the series. So I knew the whole story even before starting the first episode and by the way..... the book is awesome. There are some little changes here and there from the book because of some author's plagiarize controversy but even then I instantly fell in love with the drama series. Zhao Liying was amazing in bringing 'The valiant General of Xiuli Army' character to life. Lin Gengxin was the perfect fit for the role of 'The cold and distant yet kind and warm' young master of the Yuwen manor. I knew beforehand that there will be some hardships for our both lead characters in the beginning but I also knew that the good times will come. So I waited and waited for 56 episodes but the good times never came. They ended the series right before when she started to realize that she loves him more than anything in this world. I had to say the Ice Lake scene at the end is just as amazing as it depicted in the book. I had goosebumps watching that scenes come to life. For those who haven't read the book, I don't know how they felt with the cliffhanger ending but for those who have read the book, I can surely say that it's frustrating. Give us the Second season with the same cast as soon aspossible please.........That's all I have to say for now.

Wonder Woman meets James Bond in ancient China
AppleEye2U18 August 2017
Warning: Spoilers
If you don't like Wuxia/Fantasy you may rethink your opinion if you'll watch Princess Agents. I'm surprised myself I was totally hooked, because this show has all the characteristics: actors with long hair and large robes, jumping and fighting airborne, noble families aiming for the throne, having to choose for family or individual happiness, and the most depressing endings for people in love.

The plot: The absolute superstar of Princess Agents is Chu Qiao (Liying Zhao) a slave girl with amnesia and a hidden past. One day she finds herself thrown into a gladiator game with other slave girls. They have to fight against wolves trying to escape from deadly arrows shot by rich lords. Chu Qiao's fighting spirit and skills catch the attention of two lords: the easy going Prince of Northern Yan, Yan Xun (Shawn Dou) and the fourth master of the Yuwen Manor, Yuwen Yue (Kenny Lin) who secretly saves her from a deadly shot. Afterwards Chu Qiao is brought into the Yuwen household, where she reunites with the siblings of her foster family. They are slaves now, working under strict rules and evil slave masters. She swears to free them one day.

The cool and aloof Yuwen Yue, surname "The Ice Cube", is also the James Bond of his family. He is the head of the spying network called The Eyes of God and intrigued by Chu Qiao: where and why did she learn her fighting skills, she doesn't seem to remember? He decides to keep her close by his side as his chamber maid, training her to become a secret agent for his own family. Yuwen Yue falls deeply for the slave girl, despite his stern attitude, and she develops feelings for him. Yuwen Yue renames her Xing'er (Star), to complement her eyes and his own name (Moon), he gives her a female version of his sword (lover's sword), but he is hindered by his sense of duty towards his family and by their social status gap.

Meanwhile Chu Qiao/Xing'er becomes acquainted with Yan Xun, who is a personal friend of Yuwen Yue. Yan Xun openly invites her to become his girlfriend. He wants her to live with him in his homeland, where slavery doesn't exist. That's why Chu Qiao decides to abandon the Yuwen household to become the close companion of Yan Xun. Later she becomes his warrior maiden, when he starts a revenge war after his family gets slaughtered and branded as traitors by the emperor.

Former friends Yan Xun and Yuwen Yue fight on opposite sites now. Chu Qiao doesn't want to be called by her slave name Xing'er any longer. Her aim is to free as many slaves as possible to bring them to the kingdom of Yan Xun. Yuwen Yue gives her back her own freedom, but he can't stop loving Chu Qiao. So he loves her from a distance, aiding her in secret. During the war Yan Xun becomes an ambitious and cruel leader with no soft spots left except for Chu Qiao. He gets used to war methods killing many civilians, not caring for slaves at all, forcing Chu Qiao to doubt her choices and self esteem.

The Good: The leading characters are well written, they aren't downright good or bad, and full of inherent contradictions. It's interesting to see people change by the turn of events. I loved the chemistry between the couples. Also the supporting cast did a good job, I love-hated the evil brother of Yuwen Yue: Yuwen Huai, and his grandfather Yuwen Xi, a creepy pervert. There was some comic relief too between the harsh scenes.

The Bad: It's sometimes difficult to watch C-Drama. First: there are always too many story lines, scenes and repetitions. The film editing has many bloopers, f.e. close ups of male actors who have their sideburns visibly glued to their heads. Second: some scenes have the look and feel of a PC game in the nineties. The actors resemble paper cut figures put into a virtual diorama. Wild animals and domestic pets are fully animated, and put next to the real life actors, just like in Disney's Mary Poppins. Third: there are always scenes with actors playing a bamboo flute, completely out of sync with the music in the background.

My verdict: I can relate to Princess Agents, because the story isn't entirely focused on court intrigue or martial arts. It's also about the admiration of individual qualities, about making lifetime choices apart from social status or family backgrounds. The fighting scenes are visually attractive, all characters are played by good(looking) actors, the music score is great too. Recommended.

Had promise
cafewestlake20 April 2019
The first few episodes were exciting and lured me in. Watched it every chance I could. Then I started falling asleep bc the story dragged on and on and on. At episode 39 now and I am wondering whether to continue. Praised the main female heroine initially, but now I wonder how 3 strong men can fall head over heels in love with an arrogant, rude, constipated brat at times. One time she's breaking metal chains in an impossible situation, beating up a muscular man 3 times her size, and when it suits the story...she can't break away from skinny dudes who are not good in martial arts. Can she smile a bit and make me at least see the lure of her? They stare at each other... The guy falls in love. She berates them, and they fall in love. She gets injured, and leans her head on their shoulder, and they fall in love. Don't take me wrong, I love strong heroines... But this constipation doesn't cut it.

Thank goodness for some happy smiling and smart people at least.

Waiting for season 2 of Princess Agents
soyeb15225 November 2017
The story has a great start unlike other Chinese historical dramas. You will fall in love with the main leads mainly Chu Qiao . The story is based on the novel 11 Chu Te Gong Huang Fei (11处特工皇妃) written by Xiao Xiang Dong Er . There are 58 (Uncut) episodes which makes it long. This is the best series since Game of Thrones.I love this series very much. My favorite characters are Chu Qiao & Yuwen Yue. I am waiting for the 2nd season. Please hurry with season 2!

Fantastic Wuxia Drama!
msteakley14 July 2017
You will fall in-love with the heroine of the story literally in the first five-minutes. Zhao Liying, aka Zanilia Zhao, is is arguably one of China's most promising, up-and-coming actresses. With this show, it seems, if she hadn't already, she has for sure now arrived!

With sweeping vistas, breathtaking Chinese locations, wonderful costumes, a huge cast of top talent and one over-the-top scene of martial arts after another, the prior reviewer hit the nail on the head, this series has it all! Don't be put-off by the prior review, this is now available on Youtube, in full HD, with consistent, proper English sub-titles. If you ever thought you might like to try something from this genre, please, please, please give it a shot!

This is strictly adults-only; you've been warned.

Great drama and recommend it

Warning: Spoilers
Spoiler alert! I loved the cast and story line. Had the 2nd lead syndrome hard because of the love Yan had for Chu. He had smiled and was carefree all the time and I completely understand why he changed. But he became cold and heartless in my eyes. Tho I was still conflicted between Yan and Yue, I loved how much Yue loved her as well even when he didn't even know it himself at the time. I'm soooo hoping for a season 2 because it ended horribly. I waited for 58 episodes for her magic and didn't even receive it. Which is why I gave it a 9!!

Frustrating ending

Love how the story started. Really did not like the ending. There were no season closure to it at all. It just ended in the middle of a climatic scene. And who knows when season 2 is coming out.....

"We were born in this time when lives are cheaper than grass."
frostbow16 June 2023
Princess Agents is a historical action-adventure series, or low fantasy, if you will. It is based on a novel, and begins in the Chinese capital Changan (Xian), sometime around 300-500 AD. At the time it aired, it was the most popular Chinese fantasy series ever. It has several story arcs, and countless subplots, but can roughly be summarized as the escape of the slave girl Chu Qiao.

Among the secondary characters in the first episodes, we have the playful Yan Xun, a hostage prince from a vassal state, who has his own reasons to escape. We also have Chu Qiao's owner Yuwen Yue, a cold-hearted noble who is the chief of the emperor's intelligence organization, his wily rival Yuwen Huai, and the lively princess Yuan Chun, who is an expert in flashy entrances.

There is a huge cast of side characters, many of whom have interesting stories, secrets, and agendas, and some of whom are cool enough that they could theoretically have their own spin-offs. Some play the political game, while others are warriors (both men and women), with particular weapons and fighting styles.

A special category is the older generation of characters, whose members are not seen often, but are played by classy veteran actors and actresses, and who tend to be extremely cunning. An adventurous past is hinted at.

Chu Qiao is basically an introvert with low ambition, who just wants to be left alone. She contributes to the sparse comedy with sarcasm, and is relatively intellectual for a fantasy hero, able to formulate her own world view, make long-term plans, and make speeches. Her internal monologue can be bone-chillingly icy. In the beginning, she is quite feral, but shows empathy and loyalty. It would be easy to just sneak away in the night, but after a while she realizes that she also wants to save a few other people, leading to ever more complicated situations, in a "from the ashes into the fire" way.

Chu Qiao is a strong protagonist in that she not only reacts to external events but has her own agenda, and partly drives the forward motion of the plot with her own initiatives. She is also perfectly balanced. She is smart enough to not do anything annoyingly stupid, while not being so intelligent that success is guaranteed. Her plans are clever but straight-forward, so that anyone might agree and imagine that they would do the exact same thing, if they had the courage.

Generally, the median IQ of the cast is relatively high. Most of the characters are able to make good comments, make deductions, see through deception, and take appropriate action. It's quite refreshing.

Chu Qiao is also good at fighting, but there are many opponents who are stronger or smarter, most often making her the underdog, forcing her to think hard to survive in every episode, so that the tension and oppression never recedes. Sometimes she wins, and sometimes she is defeated, and suffers cruelly.

Furthermore, she has one of the longest character arcs I can think of, spanning over years, with several distinct phases of world view, emotional state, clothing style, and hairstyle. Sometimes I wish that she could have lived a more peaceful and happy life, instead of electing the way of pain.

Fortunately, Chu Qiao is played by the genius actress Zhou Liying, a.k.a. Zanilia Zhou, who basically just is herself, but more self-restrained than usual in this drama. She shows her skill and draws the attention in every scene, even when just standing in the background looking bored. It is possible to understand exactly what she is thinking (even if complicated), just from face expressions. She even sings a few lines of the opening song (mostly sung by another singer).

Similar descriptions can be made of other characters, from various factions, who also have long character arcs and change a lot over time, but maybe it is best to skip it, to not spoil who the survivors are.

"We were born in this time when lives are cheaper than grass. And we are born with a low class, and can be hurt by anyone." It is often safe to assume that the main character of a show will survive for most of the show, but the same cannot be said of side characters. Anyone who has seen any Chinese fantasy knows that blood and tears may flow. Since many of the side characters, and even extras, are so endearing, this also raises the stakes and adds to the ever increasing fear and tension. There was for example a cool female ninja who never said anything or did anything important. Nevertheless, I was hoping that even she would survive, and was relieved every time I saw her in good health. At one point, I was so worried for everyone that I almost was too scared to continue.

Visually, the series is magnificent, with exquisite settings and fancy costumes (not very historically correct). There are countless beautiful scenes and camera angles. But there are also scenes where they must have tried to save money, or ran out of time. Especially the underwater scenes, which are obviously fake, with no water touching the actors. This seems to be common in Chinese fantasy. I don't know if it's because it is more difficult to film under water, or if it's for actor safety reasons.

The soundtrack contains several nice songs, that if analyzed gives clues about the characters and story. The instrumental background music fits well with the plot and adds emotional weight. It is mostly orchestral music, sometimes with Chinese instruments added in, like flutes.

Oh, there are so many anecdotes to talk about. For example a scene with a group of soldiers walking in a desert. I was surprised when one of them suddenly fell to the ground. Then I realized that considering how hot it can be in some parts of China, maybe it was the actor who fainted for real?

There is a great variety of fight scenes, ranging from unarmed kung fu scuffles between slave girls, to deadly sword duels, to army battles. Especially a few of the duels are high points, finding their way to my top-list of duels. They are set in interesting locations, well choreographed, short, brutal, visually appealing, and meaningful for the characters and story. Of course, many vases get broken.

Another attraction is the luxurious parties, where all the nobles gather, and their romantic relations, intrigues, and murder plots play out, usually ending up putting the servants in danger, one way or another. The dialogue is always sharp, and it is great to see how everyone becomes more defined by interacting in a group.

In such a long series, with so much content, that was produced under time pressure, naturally there are weak points and slow passages. But it is evident that the creators wanted to show something that had not been seen before. They wanted to create astonishing scenes where unimaginable things happen, cruel and heroic. With this energy, it is like a little bit of extra effort was added into every aspect, to make it just a little bit sharper; from plot, dialogue, and character design to settings, clothing, and music. They succeeded beyond my wildest expectations.

Nice choreography, but abysmal way to and a season
bendashwood9 April 2021
The main reason this show got me hooked within the first couple of episodes. The storytelling is atypical and the visuals unusually brutal for a Chinese TV show. It dives deeply into a world of politics, intrigue, diplomacy and murder, with the main character caught in between with no proper understanding why with, the reason for which being rather uncreative though. Not that it bothers much - the personalities of the Chang'an nobility, their superficial relations and their struggle for power and influence behind the curtain is entertaining enough to spark interest where this is going. The choreography of the fight scenes looks pretty good, which is a quality that remains strong throughout the first season. Unfortunately the storytelling fails to keep its initial depth, though. The strong female lead does her best to carry the tale, but is for the most part only able to retain her standing and importance due to the fact that every noble male of note that she meets immediately and immortally falls in love with her, leaving her in the middle of the romantic hexagon (?) of their power struggle. Animations and CGI appear pretty cheap and outdated, which is unfortunately a common flaw amongst the majority of Chinese TV shows (with a few notable exceptions), but not to an extent that it hurts the numerous martial art scenes too much.

The last and final point I need to mention is the way the creators decided to close the first (and, as the time of this review: only) season. This show is drawn after the story of a book, and in order to avoid spoilers I only can say that the point to end the season was probably the most horrible decision of the entire show. Rumours have it that a second season can possibly be expected - four years after the first season's release this is more than unlikely. While the show itself was, despite its obvious flaws, quite enjoyable for me: prepare for a very unsatisfying conclusion of the season.

Full of Disappointment (Don't Be Fooled with The Casts)
lia0002731 August 2017
Warning: Spoilers
At the beginning I felt surprised of how intense this drama really feels, the slave-girls being chased around by wild wolves as a game made by the powerful young master Yuwen Hai (very evil person) for his friends including the princes and other spoil sons from rich families, one girl Xinger/Chuqiao (the heroine) showed magnificent skill by killing 3 wolves and being a sole-survivor getting attention from Yebei Prince Yan Xun (her interest) and the cold-hearted Yuwen Xue (her teacher and also her other interest). Basically it's a triangle love story between those three, of course I heart for Yuwen Xue. To spill in some plot prince of Yan turned to become cunning and bad made sworn-enemy with Yuwen Xue and Wei kingdom.

The great weaknesses of this drama are definitely the dragging plot, the development of the characters' turned outta be somehow unrealistic especially the heroine's character development felt so unreal looking at her to be that dummy and slow killing my interest of her (well I supposed as the strong main character of this drama she was supposed to have brain but very seldom i found it here instead in trouble-times she often being helped by the men who loved her (men OK not man)), the sucks cliff-hanger ending, yes true too many unnecessary stories focusing on the supporting characters made this drama becomes boring so I have to skip watching many eps since they are all irrelevant for the main plot.

The acting of the actors are OK and not bothersome. I like Lin Gengxing who was before acting as the 14th prince from Bu Bu Jing Xin (startling by each step) acted as a serious, calculating, meticulous, but also gives in to his heart sometimes. Zannila Zhao's tried to give in her best as a cold-cruel woman and it's not bad to see this side of her, as for others they are not bad since I tend to focus on those two whom give the life for this dragging drama. The soundtracks are not really good. The scenery is real at least they didn't give us fake-scenes like General and I, but gotta admit that Lost Love in Times and General & I are having much better plot and actors compare to this forceful drama. Feel disappointed so much with this drama even I am not hoping much from season 2 if the maker gonna make it as boring as the predecessor.

We want only Zhao Liying to be Xinger for Princess Agents Season 2
yannaingmoge30 November 2017
We are patiently waiting for Princess Agents Season 2 with original casts. Zhao Liying is the most suitable actress for Xinger character. She is the most talented actress I have ever seen and she matchs 'Xinger'well. No one can replace her. I only want Zhao Liying to be Xinger. If somebody replaces her, I will not show my support to PA season 2. I really want all the original casts for season 2. We are strongly willing to see beautiful love line of Yuwen Yue and Xinger again and our handsome Prince Yan Xun.

Intense, heart-wrenching and beautiful
magnoliacream3 June 2022
Chu Qiao (Zhao Liying) wakes up, with no memory of her past, in a slave cart that takes her to a human hunt field to be one of the preys. Her survival skills catch the attention of her owner, Yuwen Yue (Kenny Lin Gengxin), heir to the Yuwen feudal clan in Wei that controls the Spy Network of Heavenly Eyes. Another rich lord who notices her skills is Yan Xun (Shawn Dou), heir apparent of Northern Yan.

As Chu Qiao slowly regains her memory, her fate gets intertwined with those of Yuwen Yue and Yan Xun amidst radical changes in Wei and Northern Yan brought about by schemers, vengeful victims and a muddled emperor.

While the novel on which the drama is based ends on a much undoubtedly happier note, the drama ending is not tragic either, contrary to what netizens have been complaining about. For one, Chu Qiao finally realizes who she loves and she lets him know. Furthermore, the ending scene shows the Fengyun Order, a red spider lily mark, appearing on Chu Qiao's shoulder, meaning she has finally mastered the Cold Ice Skill. With such inner power, how can she fail to save whoever needs to be saved from the frozen lake?

Another factor that got me deeply attached to this drama is the excellent OST.

This series has it all!
smagesg6 July 2017
From swashbuckling to romance, this series has me anxiously waiting for the next installment. The largest impediment to my enjoyment are the dubious attempts at English translation. One episode will be translated, while the next is not. Is is so frustrating to miss an entire piece of the complicated plot and try to put it together by guessing. PLEASE help those of us who do not speak mandarin!

If you plan on watching this show I advise to wait till the second season comes out, or just read the book. I wish I could read the book but I am a loser who only speaks English. Lol I can't wait for the second season! When the next season comes out I will change my review to 10 starts!

Warning: Spoilers
the story has a great start, unlike other Chinese historical dramas. you will fall in love with the main leads. the story is based on a novel and it's got romance, war, history, palace etc. there are 67 episodes which makes it kinda long. some episodes are useless and some character developments are not good. you will have so many questions for the characters but none of them will be answered except for a few. there are so many rumors around for this drama that there will be a season 2. the ending was not good at all and was shocking. the editing and cinematography needs development and some episodes CGI destroys the whole thing. anyhow, strongly recommend to Chinese drama lovers.
