Chris Messina has been tapped as the lead in HBO Max pilot Verbatim, an anthology series from Brett Weiner (Honest Trailers), Ben Stiller’s Red Hour Films, Left/Right Productions and The New York Times.
Created and directed by Weiner, Verbatim is based on his New York Times Op-Docs digital series. It tackles actual events with all dialogue taken from primary sources and presented verbatim. The pilot episode follows the story of the 2019 college admissions scandal.
Messina’s role has not been revealed; I hear he may be playing the scheme’s ringleader Rick Singer.
Red Hour’s Nicholas Weinstock, Jackie Cohn and Stiller executive produce with Left/Right’s Ken Druckerman and Banks Tarver and Kathleen Lingo for The New York Times. Scott Lochmus (To Dust) and Michelene Starnadori (Unexpected) will produce.

Welcome to The B-Side, from The Film Stage. Here we talk about movie stars! Not the movies that made them famous or kept them famous, but the ones that they made in between.
And today we talk to the one-and-only Alessandro Nivola, a star who has played every manner of character in his illustrious, nearly twenty-five-year film career. Conor and I were lucky enough to speak with Nivola about his entire filmography, while focusing specifically on: Love’s Labour’s Lost, Ginger & Rosa, and Disobedience.
We discuss his big break on Broadway in the mid-90s, his break on the silver screen as Pollux Troy in Face/Off, how many thought he was from the United Kingdom for a good long while, and that part of Jurassic Park III.
We also bring up a solid indie dramedy he produced called To Dust, his new show Black Narcissus on FX, and his starring role in the upcoming,...

Photo: 'To Dust'/Good Deed Entertainment Shawn Snyder’s film To Dust digs directly into the soil of the heart with an absurdly playful melancholic rhythm, keeping us chuckling through the tears like some cathartic symphony. Co-written by Jason Begue, this incomparably nuanced narrative is a humanistic exploration of ancient traditions, modern science, and the search of serenity in the face of profound sorrow. Inspired by and written in loving memory of Shawn’s mother, Linda Snyder, it stars Matthew Broderick as a floundering biology professor and the endearing Geza Rohrig as a Hasidic widower, the film crackles with odd couple energy as science and faith collide. The story follows the determined yet soft-spoken Shmuel (Geza Rohrig) as he takes an emotional reprieve from his traditional religious beliefs as a Hasidic Jew to mourn and seek closure after his beloved wife dies of cancer. Snyder wastes no time, as we...

Géza Röhrig: “Since Son of Saul I was privileged to work with Elizabeth McGovern and Jesse Eisenberg, Matthew Broderick. And so for me to work with these people, it’s the real school of life.” Photo: Anne-Katrin Titze
Géza Röhrig, star of László Nemes’ Oscar-winning Son Of Saul and a partner in crime with Matthew Broderick in Shawn Snyder’s To Dust, produced by Alessandro Nivola and Emily Mortimer, is cousin Georges to Jesse Eisenberg’s Marcel Marceau in Jonathan Jakubowicz’s Resistance with Clémence Poésy, Edgar Ramírez (Roberto Durán in Jakubowicz’s Hands of Stone) and Matthias Schweighöfer. Géza’s upcoming roles include playing Jesus in Terrence Malick’s The Last Planet, costumes by Carlo Poggioli, and Z in Chino Moya’s Undergods.

As you’re reading this, the 35th Independent Spirit Awards are being held. Oscar will have their say tomorrow evening, but today, it’s the indie films getting their turn! Will this awards show honor the likes of The Farewell, The Lighthouse, Marriage Story, or Uncut Gems? Maybe some combination of them all? We’ll know in a few hours, that’s for sure. What this space for the Spirit Award results once the show is over. A number of deserving movies and performances are about to have one last moment in the sun, before the Academy Awards suck up the last bit of awards season oxygen. If nothing else, it’s a fun, more casual moment, before the pomp and circumstance of the Oscars… Leading the way was Uncut Gems, which took home Best Actor for Adam Sandler, Best Director for Josh Safdieand Benny Safdie, Best Editing for Ronald Bronstein and Benny Safdie.

The winners of the 2020 Independent Spirit Awards are being announced live during today’s ceremony, hosted for the second year in a row by Aubrey Plaza (fresh off rave reviews from Sundance for her performance in the indie “Black Bear”). Unlike the Oscars where Netflix is the most-nominated studio, the Spirit Awards are dominated in 2020 by A24. The indie distributor boats 18 nominations across four movies: “The Lighthouse,” “Waves,” “The Farewell,” “Uncut Gems,” and “The Last Black Man in San Francisco.” The Safdie brothers’ “Uncut Gems” and Robert Eggers’ “The Lighthouse” lead all movies with five nominations each. Both of these films are nominated for Best Feature along with Terrence Malick’s “A Hidden Life,” Lulu Wang’s “The Farewell,” Noah Baumbach’s “Marriage Story,” and Chinonye Chukwu’s “Clemency.”

Unfortunately, it doesn’t look like either Noah Baumbach or Greta Gerwig will take home a screenplay Oscar on Sunday. Baumbach is in third place in our Best Original Screenplay predictions for “Marriage Story,” while Gerwig’s “Little Women” was just dethroned by Taika Waititi‘s “Jojo Rabbit” in Best Adapted Screenplay following the latter’s Writers Guild of America Award and BAFTA triumphs. But the couple could still be part of a different winners’ circle.
The writer-director is predicted to win Best Screenplay for “Marriage Story” at Saturday’s Independent Spirit Awards — aka the same award that his longtime partner Gerwig won two years ago for “Lady Bird” (2017). He leads with 82/25 odds, backed by 12 Experts and 10 of our Editors.
Baumbach is the only Oscar nominee of the group, which ought to give him an edge. The last time a non-Oscar nominee won was 10 years ago, when “(500) Days of Summer...

In two days, the Film Independent Spirit Awards will be handed out. By now, we all know how different the Spirit Awards are than Oscar. That goes without saying. This year, the Academy Awards largely went in a separate direction, so there’s less crossover than usual. So, that means we can worry less about if these voters will reject/simulate the Academy, and just focus on how the vote might go. I’ve tinkered a bit with my picks, though ultimately I think it could be a really good night for Uncut Gems. Watch out for The Farewell (or Marriage Story) in the top category, while The Lighthouse could end up spoiling in several categories. It’s going to be interesting, the results, that much I can assure you of… Enough talk. You’ve read my thoughts on this race already in the very recent past. Time for what...

The night before the Academy Awards, the Film Independent Spirit Awards will be handed out. Obviously, the indie equivalent to the Oscars is not a predictable precursor, but it has another charm to it. Namely, it’s that this is the final chance to cite some of the beloved movies of 2019 that the Academy snubbed. Films that came close to Oscar nominations but missed, as well as ones that never sniffed a nomination, they both compete equally here. Other years have had more flicks that line up with the big boys, but it’s an interesting mix here. In fact, it’s very hard to tell how the Indie Spirit Awards will go this time around, but I’m about to try, that’s for sure. Take a look now at my predictions for the Spirit Awards. We’ll have another update before the show, but for now, this is my preview…...

Miranda Bailey’s narrative directorial debut “Being Frank” is a comedy about male hypocrisy set in 1992 that dives into many intriguing ideas and issues and gives us a lot to consider. This is commendable — given that many commercial comedies give us nothing to consider at all — but there is a tug-of-war here between her attempt to explore her characters in a very serious way with a consistent emotional basis and the demands of the material as written by Glen Lakin, which is clearly meant to be played as farce most of the time, particularly towards the end.
The first moments of “Being Frank” show high school senior Philip (Logan Miller) doing a practice job interview with his father Frank (Jim Gaffigan), and the way the shots are composed makes us feel Frank’s bullying control over his son; the effect is oppressive and even alienating at first, but to a point.

Updated with more info: Focus Features bowed Everybody Knows laid claim to the highest per-screen average of the weekend at the specialty box office. The Cannes-opening film directed by Oscar-winning Iranian helmer Asghar Farhadi and starring Penélope Cruz and Javier Bardem bowed in four locations, grossing $75,000 for an $18,743 average.
The frame’s biggest opening-weekend grosser was the 2019 Oscar Nominated Shorts, this year’s pack of Oscar-nominated short films — in Animated, Live Action and Documentary shorts — in 265 theaters via ShortsTV and Magnolia Pictures. Its widest first-weekend reach ever (67 more screens than last year) resulted in its highest-grossing opening weekend ever: a $912K total, good for a $3,442 per-screen average and possibly on its way to a $1 million total by the end of its run.
“Every year, the Oscar Nominated Shorts opens in the dead of winter, when there’s a dearth of new independent releases and compelling studio options,” Magnolia said Sunday.

We chat with Matthew Broderick about his new film To Dust and how the dark comedy tackles the great mystery of what comes next.
Ashes to ashes, dust to... well, you know the rest. Have you ever thought about the words though? As we pass on from this world, our bodies lowered into the ground—unless you’ve chosen to be cremated, in which case, those words seem all the more pertinent—do you wonder if we actually, become dust? While literally turning to dust may not be what many people expect to be the actual outcome for our mortal bodies, what does actually happen? That is the question Shmuel has after his wife passes away from a battle with cancer. As an Orthodox Hasidic Jew, these are questions his religion has no real answer for. His search for answers lead him to Albert (the incomparable Matthew...

The intersection of grief and faith is a bit complicated, whether in reality or as fiction. No two people grieve the same way, and no two cultures have the same structure for what happens when a loved one dies. First time feature film writer-director Shawn Snyder dives right into the nitty gritty of science, loss and faith, and delivers a charming, quirky, human and, at times, macabre, film in “To Dust.”
Shmuel has just lost his wife to cancer. A Hasidic cantor, he does everything his faith asks him to do following her death, but still he is obsessed with what might be happening to his wife’s corpse. Is she decomposing? If so, how? And more importantly, is her soul suffering as her body rots into the Earth? Completely oblivious that his two sons are also grieving, he goes in search of answers and meets Albert (Matthew Broderick), a...

"What are you after, Shmuel? What is this all about?" Good Deed Ent. has unveiled the first official trailer for an indie dark comedy titled To Dust, the feature directorial debut of Harvard graduate, singer-turned-filmmaker named Shawn Snyder. The film is about a Hasidic cantor's struggle to find religious solace after his wife's untimely death, while secretly obsessing over how her body will decay once buried. He befriends a local community college biology professor, seeking his help to understand what's happening underground. Géza Röhrig stars as Shmuel, along with Matthew Broderick, and the full cast includes Sammy Voit, Bern Cohen, Ben Hammer, Leo Heller, and Marceline Hugot. This film looks very peculiar but also rather unique and quite amusing, especially with Broderick giving this kind of kooky, quirky performance. Here's the first official trailer (+ poster) for Shawn Snyder's To Dust, direct from YouTube:...

“Diane,” writer-director Kent Jones’ drama starring Mary Kay Place, and actors Jeffrey Wright and Alia Shawkat were among the winners of the 2018 Tribeca Film Festival’s slate of juried awards.

Death makes fools of us all because it exposes the limitations of human knowledge. We may have strong beliefs about what happens after our final breath, but none among us truly knows what happens. That uncertainty can gnaw away at those left behind with little more than the memory and the body of the recently […]

The mordant side of Jewish humor is pushed to an extreme in Shawn Snyder’s debut feature “To Dust.” This gently absurdist — yet also sometimes downright icky — tale revolves around a grief-stricken Hasidic widower who enlists a Gentile biology teacher in an obsessive quest to grasp the decomposition process of his late wife’s body. As story concepts go, that’s an exceptionally unappealing one, particularly for what plays mostly as a low-key buddy comedy. Nonetheless, the deft execution and astute lead performances ultimately make this acquired taste of a movie not only digestible, but rather charming.

His live-in mother (Janet Sarno) provides for the basic needs of his two young sons, but they have their own grief and other emotional wants,...

Alessandro Nivola on finding Géza Röhrig for To Dust: "Dylan Leiner who is one of the guys who runs Sony Pictures Classics. He knew Géza because they released Son of Saul." Photo: Anne-Katrin Titze
Alessandro Nivola stars with Rachel Weisz and Rachel McAdams in Sebastián Lelio's Disobedience and he is a co-producer with Emily Mortimer, Ron Perlman, Josh Crook, and Scott Lochmus of Shawn Snyder's To Dust with the dynamic excavating duo of Matthew Broderick and Géza Röhrig, two highlights of the Tribeca Film Festival.
If you expect Géza Röhrig to stay in the register of desperate, detached compulsion that he perfected in László Nemes's 2016 Oscar winner Son Of Saul, you're in for a surprise. To Dust strikes a most unusual chord. What does it mean to mourn? Rituals put in place to aid the process of coming to terms with a death may also throw the...
