The rise of quality in the entries of this list becomes evident every year, with movies from countries such as Israel, Turkey, Saudi Arabia, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Jordan finding a number of way outs through festivals and streamers, winning awards all over. Of course, Iran still heads the region, as its biggest movie industry, but the biggest surprise this year came from Sri Lanka, which produced three films of true quality.
Without further ado, here are the best West-Central Asian (rest of Asia one could say) films of 2023, in random order. Some films may have premiered in 2022, but since they mostly circulated in 2023, we decided to include them.

At Annecy with four features, including buzzy main competition entry “Mars Express,” Strasbourg-based Amopix will create a second studio, Amopix Annecy, located in the Route des Creuses to the west of Annecy.
The move comes as Amopix, the animation studio behind Cannes’ Directors’ Fortnight title “Margarethe 89,” produced by Eddy, is embarking on some 10 new titles, either as an animation studio or producer or both, including Louis Clichy’s “Le Corset” and “Shalotte, an Onion for All Cases,” a TV series produced in international co-production, a potential growth axis, Amopix founder Mathieu Rolin told Variety.
Reasons for setting up in Annecy cut several ways: the location, which is highly attractive thanks to its exceptional geographical position and the presence in Annecy of the world’s biggest animation festival.
Public sector policies, implemented by Citia, behind the Annecy Intl. Film Animation Festival, are backing the development of a local animation sector with dedicated incentives.

Exclusive: Gebeka International has boarded sales on Hungarian director Áron Gauder’s drama Four Souls Of Coyote ahead of its world premiere in Competition at the Annecy International Animation Film Festival (June 11-17).
The new 2D and 3D feature-length is Gauder’s second feature after The District (Nyócker!), which won Annecy’s top Cristal award for best film in 2005.
The new work is billed as an epic adventure tale tackling contemporary issues of global warming and the destruction of the environment through the prism of a Native American creation myth.
Set in the present day, Native American teenagers confront the crew of an oil pipeline project, just down the hill from the land of their ancestors. An elder evokes the ancient tale of their Creation myth and its lesson that the challenges facing humanity are universal.

Leading lights of contemporary Iranian cinema, including “Holy Spider” actor Zar Amir Ebrahimi, “The Siren” director Sepideh Farsi, “The Opponent” helmer Milad Alami and producer Kaveh Farnam, turned up at the Cannes Film Festival to raise the alarm on the repression faced by Iranian cinema during a session hosted by Amazon Prime Video’s Sahar Baghery.
Iran has been the centerstage of widespread protests driven by women against the Islamic regime since Mahsa Amini died in police custody for for wearing her hijab too loosely in September 2022. Although the rebellion has garnered vocal support outside of Iran, it hasn’t succeeded in dethroning the Iranian regime. A number of dissident Iranian filmmakers and talent have been jailed over the last six months, notably Jafar Panahi and Mohammad Rasoulof who was recently released from prison. Rasoulof was nevertheless banned from leaving Iran to serve on the jury of Un Certain Regard at Cannes.

In “The Siren” (2023), shown in the Berlinale's Panorama section, the director, Sepideh Farsi, shows the violence of 1980's Iran-Iraq war through the perspective of 14-year old Omid. Farsi repurposes the coming-of-age and adventure movie conventions, and juxtaposes them with the grim context of the conflict. The effect is as haunting, as it is surprisingly endearing.

The Berlinale red carpet on Saturday became a protest platform against Iran’s repressive regime when a group of Iranian filmmakers and talents, joined by jury president Kristen Stewart, chanted “Women, Life, Freedom!” and demanded the release of imprisoned journalists and an Iranian rapper.

Protesters with signs demanded freedom for female Iranian journalists Niloofar Hamedi and Elaheh Mohammadi who are behind bars, accused of “conspiring against national security” for being the first to report on Mahsa Amini’s death, and for the release of dissident Iranian hip hop artist Toomaj Salehi who has been accused of spreading propaganda and could face the death penalty.

At this year’s Berlin Film Festival, politics and protests, not cinema and celebrities, have gotten top billing.

Iranian cinema got a rare bit of good news recently. Earlier this month, two of the country’s most famous dissident directors —Jafar Panahi (Taxi, No Bears) and Mohammad Rasoulof (Berlin Golden Bear winner There Is No Evil) were released from prison after months behind bars.
The elation surrounding their release was short lived: Rasoulof was soon served with new, dubious, charges that could land him in back in jail. And Panahi is still banned from making movies or from leaving the country. And given the continued, and brutal, suppression of protesters in the country by the Tehran regime, there is little cause for celebration.
“Releasing some individuals among thousands who have been arrested during a few past months, doesn’t lead me to optimism,” notes Iranian documentary filmmaker Farahnaz Sharifi (Profession: Documentarist). “Considering all these issues and censorship and restrictions we are facing with, there is a long process...

The wave of protests sparked across Iran by the death of Mahsa Amini by Iranian morality police in September came amid a banner year for Iranian cinema.
But as 2023 kicks off, more than 500 people who have protested her death and called for justice have been killed while prominent members of the Iranian film industry were either arrested, put on trial or banned from making movies. The result being that the country’s cinematic community has largely ground to a halt.
Which raises the question: unless something changes, how many films actually shot in Iran will be surfacing on the international festival circuit going forward?
In 2022, Iran-based directors landed slots in all major international film festivals and won major awards. Revered auteur Jafar Panahi took the Venice Special Jury Prize for “No Bears” and Houman Seyyedi’s tragicomedy “World War III,” which was Iran’s candidate for the international Oscar, scooped two statuettes on the Lido.

Using clean lines, a controlled color palette and a flattened 2D drawing style, Sepidah Farsi’s engrossing Berlin Panorama opener “The Siren” paradoxically creates a story rich with dimensional detail and riven with the tragedy of war. Much like Marjane Satrapi did with 2007’s “Persepolis,” Farsi uses animation as a way to set the acutely painful civilian experience of the Iran-Iraq conflict at enough of a remove to make it bearable: From a distance, like a floating overhead angle or a wide cityscape vista, even smoke clouds and flying rubble can acquire a sort of beauty.
Unlike Satrapi’s film, however, “The Siren” leans into the form’s fictionalizing possibilities until it becomes less an illustrated snapshot of life in post-revolution Iran than a kind of wish-fulfilment fantasy, such as might have been dreamed up by a teenager, in which resourcefulness, resilience and fellowship eventually win out over forces of oppression and violence.

When the Iran-Iraq war broke out in 1980, director Sepideh Farsi was a high school student in Iran. At age 16, she was incarcerated for being an anti-Islamic Republic activist. Farsi stayed in her country until 1984 and then moved to France, where she experienced the second half of the conflict.
In her first animated feature, “The Siren” — which opens Berlin’s Panorama section — the Paris-based director revisits this war through the story of a 14-year-old boy named Omid, who decides to brave the Iraqi siege of Abadan, the capital of the Iranian oil industry. After opting to stay in the city with his grandfather and a bunch of other diehards, Omid and the others take over an abandoned boat he finds in Abadan’s port, which becomes their ark.
Farsi spoke to Variety about her wish to come to terms with her country’s past with “The Siren” and her hope for Iran’s future.

Who’d have thought the 26th annual Art Directors Guild Awards would be such a good party?
Community alum and host Yvette Nicole Brown kicked things off with great energy and a few genuinely funny jokes. There followed two genuinely engaging acceptance speeches from Ethan Tobman and François Audouy and then a genuinely emotional — and funny — introduction from Kevin Costner for his longtime collaborator, production designer Ida Ransom, who received the Lifetime Achievement Award.
“I’m so impressed how many production designers are not freaked out by talking up here,” said a visibly nervous Costner. “It’s freaking me out.”
The guild also awarded Lifetime Achievement Awards to Donna Cline, Anne Harris and Denise & Michael Okuda.
Oscar-nominated Dune director Denis Villeneuve received the William Cameron Menzies Award, for which he credited all the production designers he has worked with, especially frequent collaborator Patrice Vermette. Vermette, it turns out, won the gong for Fantasy Feature Film.

One of the lesser-sung items among umpteen offbeat little ’70s movies was Larry Yust’s “Homebodies.” That 1974 black comedy on the cusp of horror was about a community of frail old retirees who turn out to be surprisingly vigorous — even homicidal — in defending their homes from the callous forces of market-driven “progress.” A similar premise is the starting point for “Bingo Hell,” which alongside “Black as Night” kicks off the second quartet of genre features premiering under the “Welcome to the Blumhouse” umbrella on Amazon Prime. This first full-length solo directorial project for Gigi Saul Guerrero exchanges the Cincinnati grit of “Homebodies” for the hotter palette of a Southern California desert town.

France’s Les Film d’Ici and Netherlands’ Submarine have boarded “They Shot the Piano Player,” the much-awaited new animated project from Fernando Trueba and Javier Mariscal after their 2012 Oscar-nominated “Chico & Rita.” The producers join existing producers Trueba PC, Mariscal Studios and Peru’s Tondero production team.
Sold internationally by Films Constellation, the animated feature is a celebratory evocation of the eruption of world-renowned Latino musical movement Bossa Nova in the ’60s and ’70s through the personal story of a young Brazilian piano virtuoso, Tenorio Jr, whose disappearance is being researched by a journalist – Jeff Goldblum attached to voice.

I was lucky enough to watch and review director Perry Blackshear’s previous movies The Siren and They Look Like People. Both are really impressive movies. Bringing fresh and original ideas to sci-fi and horror I knew he was a director that I would be keeping an eye on in his future projects. Thankfully this year brings his latest movie to Fantasia – When I Consume You.
It feels very much like a Perry Blackshear movie right from the off. This isn’t an issue and I don’t mean it in a way that all his films look the same. They just have that similar grittiness to them, they feel like real life even though you know something supernatural is almost definitely going to be involved. Perry Blackshear, writer-director of “They Look Like People” and “The Siren,” has returned with genre bending “When I Consume You,” a suspenseful twist on revenge and courage in the face of helplessness. Siblings Daphne and Wilson Shaw brave the long shadow of childhood trauma together in a fight with a demon stalker hellbent on their destruction.
“When I Consume You” stars Blackshear’s frequent collaborators Evan Dumouchel and MacLeod Andrews as well as new-to-the-crew Libby Ewing. In addition all three served as co-producers on the film, which was shot in lonely side streets of Brooklyn.
Variety spoke with Blackshear ahead of “When I Consume You’s” debut at this year’s Fantasia Film Festival.

Evan Dumouchel and Libby Ewing in When I Consume You Photo: Fantasia International Film Festival
A consistent creator of interesting independent films, Perry Blackshear works with the same small team to tell stories about the sort of people who tend to go under the radar in mainstream cinema. His previous works They Look Like People and The Siren both did well on the festival circuit and attracted a lot of good word of mouth. Now he’s back with When I Consume You, which is screening as part of the Fantasia International Film Festival.
The story of brother and sister Wilson (Evan Dumouchel) and Daphne (Libby Ewing), who have survived a difficult past and try to look out for one another when threatened by a sinister stalker, the film is big on atmosphere and has the same elements of uncertainty that fans have come to expect from Perry’s films.

Oscar-nominee Berenger plays a retired veteran who, whilst hunting in the snowy outback of Northern Maine, discovers a dead body and a bag full of cash. The film marks the directorial debut of longtime cinematographer John Barr (Video Girl). Suza Horvat produces.

Back in 2015, Perry Blackshear made an impressive splash on the festival circuit with his feature-length directorial debut, They Look Like People, and now he's taking viewers to a haunted lake in his next movie, The Siren. Featuring a supernatural romance between human and haunter, The Siren is now on Digital and DVD from Dark Sky Films, and we've been provided with an exclusive clip from the film to share with Daily Dead readers.

January’s home media releases are ending on a high note, as there are a bunch of great titles headed to Blu-ray and DVD this week. My very favorite film of 2019, Bong Joon Ho’s Parasite is making its debut on both formats, and if you missed it in theaters last year, Terminator: Dark Fate is hitting multiple formats as well.
For those of you who dig totally bananapants filmmaking, Tammy and the T-Rex is being released this week courtesy of Vinegar Syndrome. Vs is also keeping busy with Berserker, Beyond the Door 3, and Unmasked Part 25, and Scream Factory is bringing home Body Parts, Let’s Scare Jessica to Death, as well as a Steelbook Edition of The Slumber Party Massacre, too.
Arrow Video has put together a special edition release of Edge of the Axe, and the Warner Archive Collection is showing some love to the criminally underseen Two on a Guillotine.

Tagline: "Love Will Haunt You." The Siren is the next horror film from director Perry Blackshear (They Look Like People). This tale of the supernatural and revenge will be released by Dark Sky Film. In the story, a lovelorn spirit draws Tom (Evan Dumouchel) to her watery home. Near this body of water, another character is looking for answers, after a monster destroyed his marriage. The Siren will release in the New Year. And, this title also stars: Margaret Ying Drake ("Devoted") and Evan Dumouchel. More details on the release are hosted here. A few early reviews have gone into more details on the film's story. Jay Seaver at EFilmCritic sees the film's creature as a metaphor: "its title monster all but explicitly defined as a metaphor for being destroyed by a broken heart and lashing out afterward." Emotions are almost always strong after a break-up. Paul Chapinal (Film-news) talks...
