Like Will Graham, Gael García Bernal also has an interest in space, which is reflected in Rodrigo's obsession with dark matter.
Will Graham finds it understandable that Hailey's father would be so upset when she throws her oboe in front of a car. Even a lower-quality basic oboe can cost around $2,000, while a professional instrument can range from $6,000 to $10,000.
"The other genesis of the episode was the image of Rodrigo in a tree," says Will Graham. "I realized we'd never seen him on vacation, with nothing to do, and it was fun to think about where that might take him."
Will Graham wrote this line of Malcolm McDowell's at 3am one night after finishing another episode. He didn't give it any more thought until Malcolm asked how he thought Thomas knew Yoko Ono. That's when Will knew he had to "make up a weird story on the fly."
According to Will Graham, "Part of what I was trying to bring out in this scene is that Rodrigo and Hailey are both growing up in their own ways, but they don't necessarily see how the other is changing. I think that's a real part of all good relationships - learning to watch the other person."
