Showing Up star Hong Chau couldn’t imagine shooting another film directly after the emotional roller-coaster of The Whale, but she’s grateful that Kelly Reichardt persisted, anyway.
In Reichardt’s newest film that revolves around the Portland art scene, the Oscar-nominated Chau plays Jo, an accomplished, extroverted artist whose celebrated installations have made her the pride and joy of Oregon College of Art and Craft. Michelle Williams’ Lizzy, who helps her mother (Maryann Plunkett) run the school, is a former classmate of Jo’s and now lives in her shadow as both an artist and as her tenant. Lizzy, being more a low-key sculptor, is the polar opposite of Jo in that she’s quite introverted, but she’s actually the character who Chau could identify with most.
“That’s what’s so funny. I’m totally more of a Lizzy than I am a Jo,” Chau tells The Hollywood Reporter.

The episode of Wtf Happened to This Movie? covering Videodrome was Written by Jake Dee, Narrated by Matthew Plale, Edited by Diane Baldwin, Produced by Chris Bumbray and Ben Cantler, and Executive Produced by Berge Garabedian.
Have you ever considered how a movie becomes a bona fide cult classic? While many factors play a role, the phenomenon usually begins with a high-quality product that fails to resonate among the masses during its initial release due to ungraspable material ahead of its time, yet through its own undeniable merits, finds its passionate fanbase that grows over time and allows the film to become far more popular after the fact than it was in the present tense. In the case of David Cronenberg’s sci-fi body horror opus Videodrome, the film has overcome its notorious box-office failure to ascend as one of the most revered movies of Cronenberg’s illustrious career.

A new episode of the Wtf Happened to This Horror Movie? video series has been released this morning, and in this episode we’re looking back at one of the least popular films to be directed by the legendary John Carpenter: the 2001 release Ghosts of Mars (watch it Here). Why didn’t Ghosts of Mars turn out to be another Carpenter classic? We try to figure that out in the video embedded above.
Directed by Carpenter from a script he wrote with Larry Sulkis, Ghosts of Mars has the following synopsis: Long inhabited by human settlers, the Red Planet has become the manifest destiny of an over-populated Earth. Nearly 640,000 people now live and work all over Mars, mining the planet for its abundant natural resources. But one of those mining operations has uncovered a deadly mother lode: a long-dormant Martian civilization whose warriors are systematically taking over the bodies of human intruders.

George A. Romero brought the world the first flesh-eating zombies in the 1968 classic Night of the Living Dead, then followed that up with Dawn of the Dead in 1978 and Day of the Dead in 1985. He was hoping to get another Dead movie made in the ’90s, but wasn’t able to get it into production until the next decade – resulting in the 2005 release Land of the Dead (watch it Here). And with the new episode of the Wtf Happened to This Horror Movie?, we’re digging into the story of the making of Romero’s long-awaited fourth Dead movie. Check it out in the embed above!
Written and directed by Romero, Land of the Dead had the following synopsis: In a world where zombies form the majority of the population, the remaining humans build a feudal society away from the undead. Ruthless Paul Kaufman rules and protects this microcosm but enforces painful class distinctions.

In the early 2000s, Jack Black was having a moment. Richard Linklater’s School of Rock made him an unlikely leading man, with the film grossing 131 million worldwide. He was in high demand and bankable, so the time was right to finally produce his passion project – a film showcase for his cult two-person band, Tenacious D. The film, Tenacious D in The Pick of Destiny would be a big flop, only grossing 13 million worldwide. Still, in the years that followed, the film would become a kind of secret success, doing well on DVD and becoming a cult hit.
Indeed, all involved had good intentions going into this. Black was a massive star and cut his salary from a whopping 12 million to 1 million to get it made, and he would split the fee with his bandmate Kyle Gass. The movie would feature a who’s who of rock star cameos, including Meat Loaf,...

Drew Barrymore had an amusing reaction to Andrew Garfield’s recent claim that he abstained for sex for six months before filming Martin Scorcese’s 2016 film Silence.
Last month, Garfield weighed in on the ongoing debate around method acting on the popular podcast Wtf with Marc Maron.
Recalling his own experience with method acting, Garfield described his approach to playing a Jesuit priest in the 17th century in Silence.
“I did a bunch of spiritual practices every day, I created new rituals, I was celibate for six months and I was fasting a lot,” Garfield said.
“I’m kind of bothered by this idea that ‘method acting is f***ing bulls***’,: the 39-year-old actor said, adding, “No, I don’t think you know what method acting is if you’re calling it bulls***, or you just worked with someone who claims to be a method actor who isn’t...

Consider Drew Barrymore unimpressed with at least some of Andrew Garfield’s method acting choices during the making of Martin Scorsese’s “Silence.” Garfield told Marc Maron in August that he abstained from sex for six months in order to play a Jesuit priest in the Scorsese religious drama. Barrymore’s reaction? “Yeah, so?”
Garfield’s “Silence” prep came up during the Sept. 20 episode of “The Drew Barrymore Show” (via Decider), with co-host Ross Matthews joking, “I get abstaining from sex, I mean I did that my entire 20s, right?” Barrymore said back, “What’s wrong with me that six months doesn’t seem like a very long time? I was like, ‘Yeah so?’”
“We buried the lede there, that’s the headline,” Matthews added. “Drew can go six months, no big deal.”
Barrymore later cited Christian Bale and Matthew McConaughey as actors who practice method acting with strong results.

Christopher Nolan’s Dunkirk ranks as one of the director’s most ambitious movies. An immersive war epic, the film depicts the Evacuation of Dunkirk from the perspective of the soldiers on the beach, the Allied High Command, the volunteer sailors helping to evacuate the troops, and from the air via the heroic pilots giving the soldiers cover. The film has very little in the way of dialogue, with a script that only runs seventy-six pages. In this episode of Wtf Really Happened to this Movie, we try to put together how historically accurate Christopher Nolan’s account of the Evacuation of Dunkirk is, exploring what, if any, historical liberties were taken by the famously dedicated director.
Notably, the film is among Nolan’s shortest movies subverting audience expectations at every turn. Rather than try for a large-scale historical drama, Nolan opts to put you right in the shoes of a handful of characters.

Megan Fox was the “It Girl” of the second half of the 2000s. When she showed up as the love interest in Michael Bay’s Transformers, she quickly became one of the most desired women on the planet, but Hollywood didn’t quite seem sure what to do with her for the longest time. While Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen was a hit, she was famously written out of the third film. Her roles in movies like Jonah Hex fell flat, while her big star vehicle, Jennifer’s Body, was a flop – albeit one that’s been reappraised recently.
While a lot was made over the fact that she compared her Transformers director, Michael Bay, to Hitler, there seems to be no love lost between the two, with him casting her in his two big-budget Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles movies as April O’Neil. They failed to launch an enduring franchise,...

Fans widely saw 2012’s Dredd as the movie that finally got Judge Dredd right. The 1995 Sylvester Stallone film was a notable flop, with Stallone’s career taking years to recover, and many thought the idea of making a movie based on the 2000 A.D character wasn’t going to be in the cards. However, the 2012 film, which starred Karl Urban in the lead opposite Olvia Thirlby and Lena Headey, was adored by fans and is considered one of the best sci-fi action films in recent years. Yet, it was a financial bust, and behind the scenes, there was a lot of drama involving the credited director, Pete Travis, and writer-producer Alex Garland.
Like The Raid: Redemption, Dredd takes its approach to action floor-by-floor in a dilapidated apartment complex. With bullets whizzing by, drugs consumed, and a bounty on the heads of our heroes, Travis’ film takes the title character beyond his limits.

After his heart attack in 2018, Kevin Smith isn't even supposed to be here today — but boy, are we glad he still is! The New Jersey native with the gift of the gab has spent the better part of the past three decades willing his whimsy into reality. They say write about what you know, and Smith has made a solid career out of doing precisely that, much to the adoration of his die-hard fans across the globe.
It's more than that though. As one of the original indie filmmakers of the early '90s, Smith proved that anyone could make a movie. While Quentin Tarantino splattered us with blood and Wes Anderson perfected immaculate shots, Smith seemed like one of us — just a regular guy, with a regular life, who loved dissecting the big issues of the day like movies, TV, and the logistics of building a Death Star.

While Marvel fans got an incredible send-off for Hugh Jackman’s Wolverine in James Mangold’s Logan, another Wolverine movie was planned a few years earlier that would’ve taken the character in an edgier direction. Indeed, Darren Aronofsky was all set to reunite with his The Fountain star Hugh Jackman for the second spin-off sequel for the character, The Wolverine. In the end, Aronofsky left the project, with James Mangold taking over. While the finished film wasn’t particularly well-loved by fans, it did pave the way for Logan, with Mangold arguably taking the franchise into an even darker direction than Aronofsky would have. In this episode of Wtf Happened to this Unmade Movie, we look at Aronofsky’s unmade Wolverine movie and try to figure out precisely what it might have been like.

I know what you’re thinking: Wtf Happened to The Avengers? Nothing, it was one of the biggest hits ever. Not so fast – we’re not talking about the Marvel superhero team-up that shot the MCU into the stratosphere. Instead, we’re talking about 1998’s misbegotten remake of the classic British spy series, The Avengers.
On paper, this should have been a great movie. The Avengers was a classic British TV series starring Patrick Macnee and Diana Rigg as super spy agents John Steed and Emma Peel. Their “will they or won’t they” chemistry influenced everything from Cheers to Moonlighting, and the show still runs daily in the UK. Given that the show was always considered the best Eurospy franchise outside of James Bond, it should have turned into a massive franchise for Warner Bros. How did one oddball TV-Y7 cartoon portend a fraying landscape for Western cartoons in the streaming age? What does it have to do with a CEO strategy of cleansing out a repertoire of cartoons?

One of the many horror classics we received from director Wes Craven was the 1977 film The Hills Have Eyes… but when he brought us a sequel the following decade, things didn’t turn out so well. If one were to list the greatest rock n’ roll frontmen of all time, Van Halen’s David Lee Roth would be near the top. With a swagger and look that seemed tailor-made for the MTV era, Roth was riding high in the eighties and, for a while, was among the biggest rock stars on the planet.
Think about the greatest rock songs of the era, and I bet “Hot for Teacher,” “Jump,” and “Panama” are among the first that come to mind. All three songs came from Van Halen’s most popular album ever, 1984, but despite their insane success, all was not well in the band, particularly between Roth and the late, great Eddie Van Halen. As a result of their tension, Roth went solo in 1985, and Van Halen brought in Sammy Hagar to usher them into the post-Roth era. While the band still did well with Hagar, it...

Method acting is never far from the headlines as the technique seems to rally just as much support as it does hate from Hollywood insiders. Andrew Garfield is firmly in the former category.
“I’m kind of bothered by the misconception, I’m kind of bothered by this idea that ‘method acting is fucking bullshit,'” the 39-year-old actor told Marc Maron on the latest installment of his Wtf podcast. “People are still acting in that way, and it’s not about being an asshole to everyone on set. It’s actually just about living truthfully under imagined circumstances, and being really nice to the crew simultaneously, and being a normal human being, and being able to drop it when you need to and staying in it when you want to stay in it.”

Two-time Oscar nominee Andrew Garfield has come out in defense of Method acting, making the case that the craft is misunderstood. His comments come following those of such actors as David Harbour, Mads Mikkelsen and Sebastian Stan, who have respectively referred to the method as “dangerous,” “bullsh*t” and “self-indulgent.”
“There’s been a lot of misconceptions around what Method acting is, I think…It’s not about being an asshole to everyone on set,” Garfield told Marc Maron in an episode of his Maron’s podcast Wtf published Monday. “It’s actually just about living truthfully under imagined circumstances, and being really nice to the crew simultaneously, and being a normal human being, and being able to drop it when you need to, and staying in it when you want to stay in it.”

Method acting has taken something of a beating from celebrities in recent years, with stars like Brian Cox, David Harbour and Mads Mikkelsen calling the process “dangerous,” “pretentious” and even a “disease.” But the art form has a defender in Andrew Garfield, who spoke about the method in an interview on popular podcast “Wtf with Marc Maron.”
“There [have] been a lot of misconceptions about what method acting is, I think,” Garfield said. “People are still acting in that way, and it’s not about being an asshole to everyone on set. The last two years have not been good for Armie Hammer, and things will likely only worsen. With Discovery’s docuseries – House of Hammer – on the way, we look back at how exactly one of Hollywood’s most promising young stars ended up an industry pariah.
Before he went off the deep end, Hammer was considered a top-notch leading man. After making heads turn in David Fincher’s The Social Network, where he famously played Cameron and Tyler Winklevoss in a dual role, Hollywood was keen to make him their next big star. He immediately hopped into leading roles in big tentpoles. He was The Lone Ranger, and he starred in The Man from U.N.C.L.E., but both pricey movies tanked at the box office. Suddenly Hollywood wasn’t so sure he was bankable, but then a co-starring role in Luca Guadagnino’s Call Me By Your Name...

Christina Ricci is not impressed by her performance in 1995's "Casper." In an Aug. 15 appearance on Marc Maron's podcast "Wtf," the 42-year-old actor confessed she feels she was simply awful in the film.
"If you actually watch 'Casper,' I'm terrible," she said. Fortunately, she doesn't think the movie itself is bad - just her. "People get so upset when I say that. And I'm like, 'No, it's a wonderful movie," she added. "It's a childhood treasure. But I am terrible in it.'"
Apparently, tween angst had something to do with her percieved poor performance. "There was a lot going on in my [life]," she explained. "Everything was very difficult. I was always annoyed, and I just don't think I tried very hard, to tell you the truth. Embarrassingly, I don't think I tried as hard as maybe I should have."
The actor, who was 13 when the movie began filming,...

Despite Casper being beloved by a generation, Christina Ricci Christina Ricci is haunted by her performance in the '90s film. As far as the Yellowjackets star is concerned, she did not do a very convincing job in the role as Kat, the young teen who befriends the titular ghost. "If you actually watch Casper, I'm terrible in it," the actress said on the Aug. 15 episode of the Wtf with Marc Maron podcast. "People get so upset when I say that." But that's not to say Ricci doesn't appreciate the movie itself. The 42-year-old continued, "I'm like, 'No, it's a wonderful movie.' Because it's a childhood treasure for people. But I am...

Jupiter Ascending was a movie sci-fi fans were really looking forward to. It would mark the long-awaited return of the Wachowskis to the sci-fi action genre, something they left behind when Speed Racer flopped theatrically. This promised to be a large-scale fantasy epic that fans hoped would be the new Matrix. Alas, things didn’t work out that way, with critics savaging the film when it came out and audiences staying away in droves.
Complaints included a muddled sci-fi universe, a bizarre choice to make Channing Tatum’s hero part dog, and the fact that newly minted Oscar-winner Eddie Redmayne’s acting was so over the top that people thought he should have his award taken back. A charming performance by Mile Kunis as the heroine and a solid score by Michael Giacchino was not enough to save this turkey. It would mark the Wachowskis’ swan song as a team,...

If you grew up in the nineties, you undoubtedly grew up a massive fan of The Sandlot. A coming-of-age story centering around a group of baseball-loving kids who hang out every day in a Sandlot, the movie didn’t make much of a peep in theatres back in 1993. However, the box office didn’t tell the whole story, with the movie becoming a cult film on VHS, cable and later DVD, with writer-director David Mickey Evans eventually returning to make a Dtv spin-off, The Sandlot 2, while a prequel is still in development.
But what happened to all of the kids in The Sandlot? Unlike a movie like Stand by Me, there were no megastars like River Phoenix to emerge, but the cast still fared well in the years to come. Many have gone on to everyday lives, while others continue to work (successfully) in showbiz almost 30 years later. In this...

Just weeks before he passed away, the legendary George A. Romero let it be known that he was seeking funding for a project called George A. Romero Presents: Road of the Dead, a film that would be directed by stunt coordinator Matt Birman, who served as second unit director on Romero’s Land of the Dead, Diary of the Dead, and Survival of the Dead. Five years have gone by and this project still hasn’t gotten off the ground, as Romero’s passing understandably halted any momentum it had. With the new episode of our video series Wtf Happened to This Unmade Horror Movie (formerly known as The Horror Movie That Almost Was), we’re looking into what might have been if Road of the Dead had been made. Hopefully it will be made someday.
Road of the Dead was scripted by Romero and Birman. Romero said the story...
