In 1973, the killer of Welsh teenagers Sandra Newton, Pauline Flynn and Gwendoline Hughes was not caught, despite a high-profile and widespread investigation by South Wales Police. The girls’ families spent the next three decades not knowing who was responsible for brutally taking the lives of their loved ones, or whether he still lived alongside them in the local Neath and Port Talbot communities.
In 2002, a development in forensics changed everything. The cold case was reopened with much pared-down resources, and crime scene DNA was successfully used to identify Wales’ first recorded serial killer. Steeltown Murders is the story of the loss, guilt and suspicion that followed the 1970s murders, and of the perseverance of the officers who were eventually able to provide the victims’ families with the answers they’d been denied years before.
Here are the actors making up the cast behind Steeltown Murders‘ dramatisation of real-life figures and events.

Exclusive: Following the record-breaking release of the two final episodes of Stranger Things’ Season 4, creators Matt & Ross Duffer have formed Upside Down Pictures and recommitted to Netflix with several new projects. To run Upside Down, they’ve hired Hilary Leavitt, a vet of BBC America and MRC who most recently ran her own Hulu-based Blazer banner. Series she helped develop include Orphan Black, Ozark, The Great and Shining Girls.
Borrowing the company name from their juggernaut series, The Duffers will continue to lean into the formula that has been a propulsive force in Stranger Things. The brothers said the new company will be guided by the goal to create the kind of stories that inspired them growing up, “stories that take place at that beautiful crossroads where the ordinary meets the extraordinary, where big spectacle co-exists with intimate character work, where heart wins out over cynicism.”

Like most television series, Stranger Things underwent a long creative process before it finally hit Netflix. As series creators Ross and Matt Duffer pitched their project to various networks and studios, it took a different shape, meeting the trends of the time. And in the mid-2000s, when they began work on the project that eventually became Stranger Things, studios were all about found footage. With movies like The Blair Witch Project and Paranormal Activity making big profits from small investments, studios were much more interested in found footage projects, especially from untested creators like the Duffers.
Describing the origins of the show to Variety, the Duffers said the first inklings for the show came from a movie idea about the Montauk Project, a purported government program involving children with Esp and a monster. “We love conspiracy theories,” admitted Matt, and the project “was something we hadn’t seen on screen before.

Colleagues of cinematographer Halyna Hutchins, the Dp fatally shot on the set of “Rust” in New Mexico last month in an apparent accidental discharge of a prop gun, paid tribute to her vision and skill at the EnergaCamerimage Film Festival, an event dedicated to the art of cinematography, on Sunday. Hutchins, who was 42 and has been remembered throughout the film industry as a talented artist, died from her injuries after being hit along with director Joel Souza, who is recovering from his injuries.
Actor Alec Baldwin, an actor in “Rust” as well as a producer, fired the prop gun during a scene rehearsal and has told investigators he had no idea the weapon was loaded with a dangerous round. He has since been sued by a crew member over safety issues on set, an issue that has also prompted the ire of George Clooney, who has called the shooting “insane and infuriating.

At Halyna Hutchins’ Candlelight Vigil, Officials Vow to Fight Putting Production Budgets Over People
At a candlelight vigil held outside the Burbank offices of IATSE Local 80 on Sunday evening, Halyna Hutchins was remembered by her friends and colleagues as a loving and passionate mother, wife, friend, and filmmaker whose life was cut short when she was shot and killed on the New Mexico set of “Rust” last week when the film’s star and producer Alec Baldwin fired a prop gun.
The hundreds gathered focused on mourning Hutchins, but many also connected the tragedy to broader conversations around crew safety and the familiar financial pressures that lead productions to make sometimes dangerous cost-saving decisions.
Among those who spoke was ASC President Stephen Lighthill, who taught the 42-year-old Hutchins at the American Film Institute.
“I thank her for being a really brilliant student who came to AFI already a mother. When we interview at AFI, we’re looking to bring in a person, not just a technician,...

Like most Marvel Studios offerings, Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings is a peculiar but polished amalgam of subverted genre tropes, dazzling action sequences, and heartfelt character moments that is ultimately meant to feed the larger MCU monster.
But more importantly, it’s a cultural milestone for Asian and Aapi audiences, who have been underrepresented and misrepresented in major motion pictures since, well, the advent of film. Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings is another gigantic superhero movie from arguably the biggest studio on the planet, but the fact that it features a diverse cast of Asian characters (what a concept) makes it nothing short of ground-breaking.
At the center of it all is Simu Liu (Kim’s Convenience), who proves out of the gate that he has the chops to balance both badassery and buffoonery, a valuable skill that most MCU lead roles call for.

Three Parisian female graffiti writers summon a vengeful succubus in a movie that draws inspiration equally from Candyman and Moroccan fireside folklore
Western nations have been slow to use cinema to confront the modern-day legacy of colonialism – but perhaps France’s especially acrimonious decolonisation means the ripples are felt more violently in that country’s films than most. After the invisible threat in Michael Haneke’s Hidden, and the somnambulist sway of 2019’s Zombi Child, the French postcolonial movie goes all the way to full horror in this raw but forceful banlieue-set film which draws equal inspiration from Candyman and Moroccan fireside folklore.
Nicking the “black-blanc-beur” (black-white-north African) setup of La Haine, the protagonists are Amélie (Mathilde Lamusse), Bintou (Suzy Bemba) and Morjana (Samarcande Saadi) – three girl graffiti artists who live in a Paris estate and convene in a lofty, derelict block to smoke gear, dance to trap and tag walls.

Is it just us, or do the 2001 Oscars feel like yesterday and also a million years ago all at the same time? Chalk it up to the time warp that was 2020, but it's hard to believe that exactly two decades ago, Hollywood royalty like Kate Hudson, Halle Berry and Jennifer Lopez were just beginning to ride the wave of their big breaks. At the ceremony in 2001, Julia Roberts nabbed her first Academy Award for Erin Brockovich, and Russell Crowe's performance in Gladiator not only made him a household name, but an Oscar winner. The historical blockbuster also beat out film classics like Chocolat, Crouching Tiger, Hidden...

The Notebook Primer introduces readers to some of the most important figures, films, genres, and movements in film history.Krzysztof Kieślowski once declared that “everybody’s life is worthy of scrutiny, has its secrets and dramas,” and these kinds of secrets and dramas were indeed at the heart of his assiduously affecting cinema. Applying the tactile textures of everyday objects and elements—recurrent motifs to advance a consistently generous formal construct—his poignant narratives support the fragility and inscrutability of human existence. As he delved deeply into the profound enigmas of characters at the proverbial crossroads of life, Kieślowski combined an observational detachment with the passionate expression of subjective intimacy, pushing past the inevitable sociopolitical surroundings that informed much of his early work and refining the more sensitive moments of self-reflection, ritual, and randomness, where precarious individual actions have comprehensive consequences.Born June 27, 1941, Kieślowski and his itinerant family moved throughout...

Welcome back to Let’s Scare Bryan to Death! Joining us this month is Tarik Davis, a writer and actor whose work stretches across media platforms, from film and television to online content and even stage productions. He’s currently featured on Peacock’s The Amber Ruffin Show, where his horror sensibilities can’t help but peek through from time to time. Horror fans should also check him out in the short film Page One, the Stakes is High essay series that he wrote to explore hate and fascism through the lens of vampire films, and his video "Your 21st Century Woke Horror Host: Addison Hadley."
Given Davis’ eclectic mix of horror and sci-fi inspirations, I was excited when he recommended Jack Sholder’s 1987 film, The Hidden. I’ve had The Hidden on my radar ever since I heard it described as a better version of Jason Goes to Hell,...

As we get deeper into the summer, entertainment offerings are bound to start slimming – particularly in this pandemic era. Perhaps there’s no greater example of the oncoming drought than Amazon Prime’s list of new releases for July 2020.
Though the new options may be few and far between on Amazon this month, at least they pack a bit of a punch. In the case of Hanna season 2, that punch is quite literal. Esme Creed-Miles returns as the titular precocious super soldier. You can check out our review here. Beyond that, there are two intriguing Amazon original movies. The first is the Rosamund Pike-starring Radioactive and that arrives on July 24. Then there is the Dave Bautista film My Spy on July 26.
With HBO Max now on the scene, Amazon Prime is sure to lose some of its library titles. That can already be seen in the relatively sparse offerings for July.

An executive’s important business trip is threatened by unnerving family news in an eerie, elegant psychological drama
The creepy phone call that’s coming from inside the house – a well-known scary-movie trope. The threat is more disturbingly intimate than you thought, or more disturbingly metaphorical. It’s an idea touched on in this elegant and mysterious psychological drama from Austrian film-maker Marie Kreutzer. Her trajectory of fear is not angled as you might think, towards a supernatural revelation or a down-to-earth explanatory twist or even an enigmatically balanced ambiguity between the two. For much of the time, The Ground Beneath My Feet has the uncanny-realist feel of something like Olivier Assayas’s Personal Shopper or Michael Haneke’s Hidden with its moment-by-moment portrait of emotional breakdown in the face of an unexplained phenomenon, and there’s something of Maren Ade’s Toni Erdmann in its study of family dysfunction.

Exclusive: AMC Networks streamer Acorn TV has acquired The Nest, BBC One’s relationship thriller from Studio Lambert.
The drama, starring Line Of Duty‘s Martin Compston and Peaky Blinders‘ Sophie Rundle, will be made available to Acorn’s 1M subscribers in the U.S. and Canada on July 13.
All3Media International has also sold the drama to pay-tv channel C More in Denmark, Sweden, Norway and Finland, while BBC Global Channels has acquired the five-part series in Hong Kong, Singapore and Malaysia. Spain’s Comunidad Filmin has also picked up the show.
The Nest was created by BAFTA-winning writer Nicole Taylor, and features Compston and Rundle as a wealthy couple with an idyllic life Scotland — except for the fact they are having fertility issues.
A chance encounter with an 18-year-old from Glasgow (played by Sex Education‘s Mirren Mack) gives them the chance of having their dream baby, but the process is far from straightforward.

In a new segment dubbed “Beeing At Home,” Samantha Bee has taken to filming Full Frontal from the safety of her home woodshed.
“If there’s one takeaway from the videos the other late night hosts have put out it’s that they have incredible homes,” Bee says. “But I can do you one better: I’ve got a woodshed. Why? Because I’ve been preparing for something like this for years.” She adds, “Now I live out here to protect my wood.”

Herbert L. Kloiber, Former Tele Munchen Group Exec, Launches Night Train Media for High-End TV, Film
Herbert L. Kloiber, former managing director of Tele München Group, has launched a new media venture focusing on European film and series projects.
Munich-based Night Train Media is looking to develop, co-produce, finance and distribute in-house and third-party projects.
Speaking to Variety, Kloiber said it was the ideal time to launch the company “in this current golden age of television.” He is also keen to work with German broadcasters like Ard, Zdf, ProSiebenSat.1 and Rtl.
“The broadcasters now all have non-linear streaming services (such as) Mediathek, Joyn and TV Now growing into that space and they are great partners for setting up shows between European broadcasters and then allowing my company still to participate on the international distribution side rather than giving all the rights to one player worldwide,” he said.
That doesn’t mean, however, that Night Train Productions won’t stream on other platforms, he added. “But I...
