- Ross treats Demelza to her first-ever stay in London, arriving together with Dwight and Caroline, but although she enjoys the glamour of societal life, at soon sets a grim trap. A wager with George focuses reputed womanizer Monk Adderley's predatory attention on Demelza, whose over-polite failure to publicly dismiss him renders Ross jealous enough to challenge his 'rival' to a duel, although Monk killed several opponents, Ross never fought one. Despite their seconds' best efforts, the duel takes places, surprisingly leaving Dwight to attend in vain to the mortally wounded Adderley, who shows his only chivalrous side by helping to cover up, so George can only spread the generally believed rumor Ross killed a fellow MP, not provide sufficient proof for a legal prosecution. Ross's marriage is under strain, as Demelza resents his lack of faith in her fidelity enough to return to Cornwall early, alone. There Drake's hope he might still win widowed Morwenna is crushed by her claim that marital rape renders her allergic to all sexual attention, even his, and refusal to deny him the wife's carnal duties.—KGF Vissers
