Social media and the internet were abuzz on Monday with headlines centered on Gwyneth Paltrow’s slightly stilted walk across the stage (as Stevie Wonder’s “Superstition” played in the background) while presenting an award at Sunday night’s 71st annual Emmy Awards.
There, with husband Brad Falchuk, co-creator of the Netflix show Pose, the 46-year-old star presented the award for outstanding lead actress in a drama series to Jodie Comer. When Paltrow walked out onstage — looking glamorous in a black-and-white vintage Valentino dress with floor-sweeping tulle strips on the sleeves — all eyes shifted from her gown to her gait....

It was known ahead of time that the Emmy Awards planned to dispense with a traditional orchestra or pit band for the walk-up and bumper music. What wasn’t anticipated was that the music choices were being outsourced to a bar mitzvah DJ in Des Moines. Or, very possibly, it was a local who had found the right cords to hook the world’s last surviving iPod Mini into the board backstage at the Microsoft Theater, without any monitors that would allow him or her do anything so brazen as tailor the song choice to the winner.
Well, there was at least one match, early on, when Alex Borstein won for “The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel,” and her walk-up music was “Susie Q,” as in the character she plays, Susie Myerson. And that was just about it for the direct hits, as the playlist thereafter went mostly into a randomizer assortment...

When thinking of classic television performances by major recording artists, people usually mention “Saturday Night Live,” “Ed Sullivan,” Super Bowl halftimes, the Doobie Brothers on “What’s Happening” and late-night shows ranging from Johnny Carson to James Corden.
Rarely does anyone mention “Sesame Street” — which is understandable, because the show’s audience is overwhelmingly children aged 5 and below — and yet it holds one of the greatest and most unique music archives of the past 50 years.
You’ve got Stevie Wonder singing “Superstition” as well as a numbers freestyle on the show’s classic set in 1973. A beaming Lauryn Hill and the Fugees dancing around the streets of New York with Big Bird and Mr. Snuffleupagus to a revised version of “Be Yourself.” Patti Labelle leading a rousing gospel-inspired musical reading of the alphabet. Opera icon Marilyn Horne singing an astonishing, pitch-perfect take on “C Is for Cookie” on an elaborate mock-Egyptian set surrounded by Muppets.

Stevie Wonder wanted to meet Tonto. He had just turned 21, was flush with cash and had all these songs and sounds in his head that he couldn’t get onto tape. The 40th edition of the Copenhagen Jazz Festival, which runs from July 6 to 15, featured a truly impressive range of music with approximately 100 venues hosting over 1400 performing acts. The citywide celebration relies on a loose consortium of independent promoters, producers, programmers, musicians and club owners to book an array of talent showcasing Danish artists, elder journeymen, new talent and international stars from the world over — all with a healthy respect for the history and traditions of jazz.
Marquee acts like Jeff Beck, The Roots, and the Brad Mehldau Trio all had big nights early in the festival, while saxophone icon Pharoah Sanders (pictured) took the stage for two sold-out shows at the intimate Brorson’s Church. Veteran drummer Albert “Tootie” Heath enjoyed the support of a decidedly international band, as did Boston saxophonists George Garzone and Jerry Bergonzi, both of whom have been coming to the festival for years, each playing...

Shelf sitters aren’t always bad news in my eyes; take for instance Superstition (1982). This Canadian curiosity was filmed in ’81, released abroad in ’82, and finally washed ashore in North America in early ’85; it is by turns goofy, gory, dumb, and creative in its kills, and is a great addition to a sub-genre I’m just going to call Italiadjacent, where films from this side of the pond look to that side for aesthetical inspiration and end up with nonsensical storylines. And while Superstition tries to keep it together, it can’t help but let loose and summon up its inner Argento from time to time.
Also known as The Witch, Superstition was part of the U.K.’s notorious early ‘80s Video Nasties scene, but landed on the non-prosecutable Section 3 list, which I guess were films still really bad for you, but not “go to jail” bad for renting or selling them.

If you came of age reading comics in the 80’s or afterward, Chris Claremont is a person who needs no introduction. Arguably, the most successful mainstream comic writer of all time, Chris wrote the singular team comic for a generation of readers and set the template for a myriad of other media featuring the world’s most Merry Mutants.
His work on such Marvel Comics as X-men, New Mutants and Wolverine didn’t just set the standard for super hero development and angst in its era. No, Chris’ impact extends to audiences that have never read one of his comics, making a way for Storm, Cyclops, Wolverine and Kitty Pryde to make their mark across the world and maybe across the Universe.
We can only hope.

Atlanta actors, listen up! Stay in the loop about what’s currently filming in your fair city (and projects, big and small, seeking talent) with our weekly roundup. Atlanta is hot hot hot! There’s a major search for talent for YouTube’s adaptation of “The Karate Kid.” Casting directors are filling roles for actors that are a range of ages, as young as nine, and up to mid-forties. January Curry is casting for a few featured and background roles in Mario van Peebles’ “Superstition.” Talent is expected to start work at the very end of the month. An independently produced web series called, “We’re Pretty Terrible” is seeking teens for featured roles. It’s good pay, and an excellent opportunity for the 13–15-year-old set. For those in other parts of Georgia, there are some reshoots going on of “Encounter,” a sci-fi drama starring Luke Hemsworth and Anna Hutchison.
