I remember back in the 80's when I was a teenager, I used to think that Lita Ford was one of the hottest women around. Looking back on it now, well, yeah that sure still holds as true. I wasn't much of a heavy metal fan quite honestly but I sure heard a lot of it regardless. And it does have to be said that Lita Ford really stood out at the time solely for being a woman in this genre of music. It seemed to be only her, the band Vixen and Lorraine Lewis from Femme Fatale who represented women in hair metal. Looking back on it, this literally makes no sense, seeing as all the guys in this genre of music seemed to be poodle permed, with a good number actively trying to look like girls. So, it kind of seems to me that this very glossy form of metal should have been perfectly suited to feminine glamour. But alas, no. Ford had of course been the guitarist in the pioneering all girl hard rock band The Runaways. The other guitarist from that band Joan Jett had already had quite a bit of solo success, including the awesome 'I Love Rock 'n' Roll' which incidentally was my favourite song when I was ten years old! Ford's career took longer to take off and it was in the late 80's when she finally peaked commercially and critically, at the height of the popularity of pop-metal. This concert film is taken from this era.
Firstly, you have to automatically give Ford credit for succeeding in such a male-dominated genre of music. And she is a great performer, which is showcased quite clearly here. She has a sexy and forceful stage presence, with slightly aggressive vocal delivery. All topped off with some full-on axe work throughout. Her and her band deliver this set of songs with confidence during a performance at Wembley Arena in London. Some highlights? Ford kitted out in full leather and cap delivering 'Can't Catch Me' was memorable and ever better was the extended version of 'Fatal Passion' where the group properly deliver the goods in an energetic musical workout. The live songs in general are the real highlight of this video – there are three additional promo videos also included which bookend the show. For fans of 80's metal I would say this is a good item to own. It's also a good item if, like me, you just like women who rock and Lita Ford is certainly one of those that much is self-evident.
