As you point out, film culture in general and festivals in particular are being exhaustively picked at and vividly debated over to in order try to fight the tragic inertia of wide-spread and often institutional biases and discrimination. This deep questioning is being seen everywhere from hiring practices all the way to, as you indicate, programming choices and the diversity of critical voices. On the one hand, I find this context an inspiring one for improvement and change for an industry that is all kinds of conservative; but on the other, I do indeed find myself preliminarily wearied these days by the gamut of cultural criticism...

During its 13th edition, the Camera Japan Festival serves its 8000+ visitors with over 40 recent Japanese film titles, ranging from arthouse drama to crowd-pleasing blockbusters and comedy to out-of-bounds horror. The official kick-off of the festival will take place Wednesday September 26 at Worm Rotterdam. After that the festival will continue in the art-house cinemas of LantarenVenster in Rotterdam and Kriterion and Eye Filmmuseum Amsterdam. Ticket sales will start August 30.

The program of the 18th Japanese Film Festival Nippon Connection in Frankfurt am Main is complete! From May 29 to June 3, 2018 the audience can discover more than 100 new short and feature films at the biggest festival for Japanese film worldwide – from blockbusters and anime to independent and documentary films. Almost all of the films will be presented as German, European- international, or world premieres. A diverse supporting program provides about 50 exciting cultural activities apart from the cinema. Numerous Japanese filmmakers, musicians, and artists will be our guests at the festival. As the guest of honor, renowned actress Shinobu Terajima will receive the Nippon Honor Award 2018. The events will take place at the festival centers at Künstlerhaus Mousonturm and Theater Willy Praml in der Naxoshalle as well as four additional locations in Frankfurt am Main.

Completing his apocalyptic sci fi diptych that began with Before We Vanish in Cannes’ Certain Regard last year, Kiyoshi Kurosawa’s new film Foreboding (Yocho) tells a closely related story. Once more, aliens come to Earth to research human beings by stealing their mental concepts before launching a full-scale Independence Day-style invasion. This Berlin Panorama Special entry seems like an unnecessary variation on the first film, sharing most of its pros and cons, including some eerie moments, slow storytelling and excess length, but lacking its more spectacular action sequences. The closing line of dialogue, “The invasion is beginning,” brings to mind...
