Ex Parte

Warning: Spoilers
The hostage crisis episode, most shows do it one or two times, maybe three, but Criminal Minds does it once or twice a season.

Usually they are among the highlights of a season, but this was a really weak edition.

I am glad they actually had a few people die, usually we don't get that much, but Criminal Minds, which has been on a hot streak as of late, did not really deliver here.

One of the worst from CM

Warning: Spoilers
I'm watching Criminal Minds since the beginning of the show. This is my favorite show! But this episode was messy as hell and one of the worst I've seen. I mean I was happy to see something out of the ordinary, but come on - they find out that there's a vent entrance and somehow the agent runs for it, not the spec.ops guys? And seconds after he finishes off the bad guy #1, the full staffed spec off guys arrive? cliche much? The guy who doesn't hesitate a second to kill 2 people just to show he can kill someone, suddenly hesitates for 15 seconds to kill someone who undermined him by putting on a camera, right? Just so the FBI has time to tell the victim what to say. The writers and editors really gave too less of an effort in this episode.

Put me as one of the editors and I will do a better job.

Stupid

The whole episode is just ridiculous. Especially when the agent goes off alone and suddenly can't shoot and a book takes him down.

Dumbest hostage situation EVER!
CrimeDrama13 January 2021
Warning: Spoilers
This episode is 180 degrees from the movie Die Hard in terms of the realistic nature of a hostage situation. I am left scratching my head because the writers had PLENTY of inspiration to draw from. The motive in this episode is ambiguous at best. It is impossible to force the justice system to release a death row inmate. In a show full of leaps, that one is ridiculous. Money was mentioned at one point but how do you get money by taking hostages at a law office with automatic weapons and C4 explosives while your only demand has nothing to do with money (see above)? After Garcia tells the team about a potential access point in the building, why doesn't Simmons ask another team member like Alvez to help him in his rescue attempt...or the whole team?! Throughout this series, the worst things happen to team members when they are alone or have no backup on scene. Two on three or two on two is much better than Simmons going alone. He got lucky that one of the suspects was already dead and after Simmons was spotted, the bad guys seem to forget they had hostages. Why do they chase one agent when they could shoot all of the hostages or blow up the building? Of course Simmons takes advantage of that.

So predictable
Itmightbeworse10 December 2018
I am rather annoyed, Criminal Minds has been my no.1 crime series since CSI Las Vegas has ended. But it is getting more and more a pale ghost of what it was in the past seasons. Too much über- dramatic episodes, too much personal involvments. Since the Mr. Scratch saga and the Reid in prison saga it has been missing its main features. This particular episode is reheated soup. Just a bunch of cliches.

It was a good episode until the ending

Warning: Spoilers
The ending of this episode makes zero sense. All of the FBI and other officers in the episode couldn't figure out how to infiltrate a floor, but Matt was able to break in by himself to save his wife, no problem.

Then when it came time to shoot the main criminal, he suddenly misses horribly after waiting forever to even take the shot. It really destroyed the entire build up of the show. Unless I'm missing something, none of it made sense. His wife, similar to the other females on the show (Garcia especially) over-acted in almost every scene she was in, and she was extremely unbelievable.

With all that said, it was STILL probably one of the best episodes of season 13, which has been a complete dumpster fire.

Without the other

'Criminal Minds' has always been one of my most-watched shows and was a personal favourite for a while. Seasons 1-5 was its best period, Season 4 was especially great. It did get hit and miss from Season 6 onwards, with a mix of good and more episodes and disappointing and less episodes. Season 11 was, apart from about 5 episodes, pretty weak. Season 12 was inconsistent but generally an improvement, its weakest episodes nowhere near as bad as the low-points of Seasons 6, 9 and especially 11.

Season 13 so far has not been too bad, in fact it's been quite good. It is already so much better than Season 11, which started off well actually but quickly went downhill, and has generally settled quicker than Season 12. As far as the previous Season 13 episodes go, the only one to be less than mediocre was "Annihilator", a season and show low point and the worst episode since Season 11 with "Inner Beauty". Most of the episodes actually ranged from decent to very good, though there aren't any classics.

"Ex Parte" is one of the season's weakest episodes. Was also underwhelmed somewhat by "Submerged", but actually as said the only low-point was "Annihilator".

There are obvious good points. As always with 'Criminal Minds', the visuals are stylish and atmospheric. The music is not too over-bearing or low-key. There are intriguing moments in the writing and some of the direction is alert and accommodating.

All the acting from the leads and support is without complaint, and Matt has settled well. Far more so than most new team members that either took a while to gel or never did. The team work is nice, the start intrigues and Kristy is a rootable character. Story-wise, the stuff with Leonard is far more interesting than the case and has creepiness, Harry Groener's performance helps quite a bit.

For all those good things, there are some debits too. The case for me was underwhelming, definitely one of the weaker ones of the season, though still much better than "Annihilator". It did from personal opinion lack tension and suspense, sometimes going the unintentionally goofy route. The story was fairly routine, the unsub was not one that was particularly interesting or menacing and this is another episode where an unsub's motivations for such elaborate crimes and methods are rather ordinary. Some of it was on the vague and under-explored side too, as well as messy and sometimes ridiculous.

Pacing at times could have been tighter, as could have other parts of the writing. The climax was somewhat too pat and could have done with more tension. The team work and procedural aspects within the team worked well, would though have liked more character moments and little things and that it balanced better with the case which is somewhat too heavily focused on. There were for my liking not enough and it was only with Matt and to a lesser extent Rossi that was particularly memorable and even that could have gone into more depth.

In conclusion, not bad but disappointing. 5/10 Bethany Cox

Waste of Time
patmobile29 May 2023
Warning: Spoilers
The show begins in the middle of the night with a service truck having two workers being hijacked by two armed men. One of the hijackers tackles the service guy while he is in the middle of calling into the base station . The dispatcher at the other end has to know that something is not right . He would ,logically, try to make contact, and when he gets no response, alert authorities. If the dispatcher is too lame to figure it out, then when the service workers don't arrive at their next call , the dense dispatcher will be forced to report the missing truck. At that point, the service truck's LoJack or GPS would be activated and the truck would be located.

Instead, the hijackers are able to bide their time until daylight, either in the hijacked truck or in a decoy truck - the episode doesn't make that clear.

Also, the hijackers tie the service guys up ,then murder them. Why tie them up if you are going to kill them?

Very poor writing throughout season 13. How lazy and insulting can writers be? Jeff Davis has been writing since the beginning so the blame may lie with the guest writers or the directors. Who knows.
