Interesting Characters, Tough Lifestyle
goody-4234115 May 2021
Both my wife and I enjoy following the ups but mostly downs of the various groups of miners. Naturally some you get to like and wish goodluck others the opposite.

The guys have chosen a tough road for themselves but with the odd exception , face the many failures with fortitude.

The buying agents naturally seem not to reward the miners efforts too well but trade on the fact that most miners are desperate for a few dollars to buy food or diesel. All human life is thus on display.

Hype and danger
This programe is a small clipse into the lives of people effected by the bug of opal-fever of colour and the potential to get rich quick, as the episodes suggest! But in-the-end, when these people are doing is very dangerous, not too mention the posibility of being robbed for their opal. Note that individual miners will invent there own terminologies to desbribe what they are doing in the process of opal mining. And yes it would appear that the producers are trying to create an atmosphere of dangerous urgency or desperate need to survive either from the mining or life-style. Though Its shows people what takes to mine and in this case aussie opal and practicality of what is needed and science uised but little geologist help not used in the episodes I watched in season 1. Still a great watch if you are like me ans wish you could mine for opal but know that will never happen! DJ

Overdramatic drivel.
ministerbob6 October 2018
Interesting subject, but way too americanized and overdramatic show. Ridiculous narrator and music, who tries to make everything sound dramatic as F.

Fake finds & Cols on the gear
gojumpindustries4 March 2019
Pretty pathetic, I know there has to be some manipulation of the footage but sometimes it's so obvious that a rock has been planted that it's sad. Col stay off the gear too mate, youre not fooling anybody!

Yair, right ...

Having spent some time down a few holes in opal mines, I can tell you that the vast majority of those who go chasing opals are nowhere near as lucky as the mob portrayed in this series. Funny that every team that ventured down in search of opal found it! If it happened to be as easy as that to find opal, the stone would be worthless.

Talk about manufactured garbage for the mass, dumb market ... this stuff is just about as believable as the television show "Married at First Sight" and the movie "The Blue Lightning".

Too much drama
marcococco-15 October 2022
Warning: Spoilers
I'm watching this show for a while on italian channel Dmax. The idea of showing how such a precious gem like Opal is harvested. We can learn a lot watching this show (and all the others of the same kind) expecially about what are the most precious type of opal, where to find them (if you're lucky) and so on.. What I don't like in these kind of show is the amount of obviously staged dramas in which the protagonists of the show always fall in. The major part of the show is about complaining for rain, floods, broken gears and so on. Then, we can see the characters keep stating that if they don't find any opal, they won't gain money (and fancy clothes like the.opening theme says). Captain obvious docet.

Every team of opal hunters seem to have also personal dramas.

I know that for a "Reality" to be amusing there must be some dramas but enough is enough. Then, at the end of a season (if not at the end of any episode) they find the "holy grail" and gain in a single shot thousands of dollars.

I gave 5 stars out of 10 because of the documentary part, but the drama part is really annoying.

Unsafe in any language

Wow, cannot believe how dumb these people can be. Most wear no safety glasses/goggles. They dig out under overhangs inviting collapse and drive into obvious bad road situations.. Avg IQ must be in the 50 range.

Boring and incredibly REPETITIVE wannabee 'reality' show
Pizzaowner12 January 2021
REPETITIVE to a degree that is ANNOYING even half-way through the first season and it gets worse every season. At the start of each episode ( which is 44 minutes long before all the garbage is added ), 5 minutes wasted on what we saw last episode....5 minutes wasted at the end telling us what we're going to see and ON AND ON throughout the endlessly boring episodes we hear the same stuff about how rare they are, how dangerous it is...., how they are made ...how the people who search for them are special ( hint...if you want to see THOUSANDS of people just like these go to Vegas....gamblers are a dime a dozen.) Occasionally they find something worthwhile but mostly there is a huge musical clue that something 'exciting' is going to happen and it isn't very exciting. This series would best be used as a university class on how to take an interesting subject and BEAT IT TO DEATH. Horrible waste of time.

Nothing really happens
Maedhros3529 April 2018
It's the "opal" version of Deadliest Catch or Ice Road Truckers. And just like in the other series, nothing really happens. The voice-over tries to emphasize some urgency - running out of money or time - and creates some sort of tension: "Have they found a real big opal?" And - of course - they haven't. So the episode soldiers on from location to location, about 3 or 4 in total. At the end of the episode none of the lives has really changed - except for mine since I lost about 40 minutes of my time.

For some reason if you live in America you can only watch season 1,2,5 all the other seasons are impossible to find. Is anyone even able to fix this issue or can someone at least explain why it is like this.

The music is horrible
scharlesterrien29 February 2020
I like the premise of this show. Are the opal finds staged...? I think probably. I have a hard enough time understanding Australian English. The most horrible music overplays the dialog...thus I give 5* out of 10. Lose the music and this would improve the show. However that will never happen with immature direction. This is what happens when you let children run the show.....

False advertisement
andrewsotosr9 April 2024
So I ordered twice from them. First order I was sent had clay stuffed rocks nothing but trash! I just got my new order and guess what? The jar of rocks they sent is nothing like the picture they say your buying from there website. It's like they are doing this to Americans only sending there chips off there good stuff and sending us left over junk! I'm not happy with them. There a fraud at best! Use to be a big fan of there's and watch there show. No longer a fan or watching them anymore. Truly sad what the world has become. Don't order from them it's a rip off! I've learned a real lesson thought the first time was mistake but it's a rip off big time.

Losers United
Eddy Hertens9 April 2023
Sad to see all these people spend their life doing ...nothing.

Although they produce quite a lot of blood (sometimes), sweat (buckets) and tears (at the end of the day) most of them never get any richer, either physically, metaphorically, intellectually or morally.

Unfortunately an image of scurrying rodents comes to mind when I see them digging in the dirt, breaking every Little Rock into even smaller pieces. Makes you wonder how many of these people commit suicide, become alcoholics or get addicted to drugs.

Like with all similar setups, the real money is made by the dealers and buyers of the Opal, who pay the diggers a pittance and sell the stuff for a fortune. Having lived in Sierra Leone almost thirty years ago and having seen what so-called 'blood diamond' does to a society I am truly appalled by this series.

Hard work 😓
jaanrobertson16 August 2022
I mean its an interesting show but these people barely make a living!!! The spend all their time and money searching for this elusive gem and when they do they can barely put on the table.

Harsh conditions, harsh environment and harsh reality is the truth about Opal mining.

It seems Gold is far more lucrative.
