It was 2:30 a.m. for Danielle Brooks when she got the call that she had been nominated for an Academy Award for best supporting actress for her role in The Color Purple.
Brooks is in New Zealand currently working on the Minecraft movie and had her phone on “do not disturb” while the Oscar nominations were announced Tuesday morning. When her husband and 4-year-old daughter called and told her she did it, she was almost certain she knew what they were talking about but wanted to hear the exact words.
The actress’ nod for Sofia (a role she also received a Tony nomination for when she was in the Broadway production) marks the only Oscar nod for The Color Purple. While Brooks says she’s honored and humbled to represent the film in such a big way, she notes she didn’t do it alone.

For our latest dive into recent books on or related to cinema, we’re spending time with some icons––fictional (James Bond) and non. Let’s start with 50 color palettes and one beautifully unique new text.
Colors of Film: The Story of Cinema in 50 Palettes by Charles Bramesco (Frances Lincoln)
Colors of Film is an engrossing study of how filmmakers utilize color in complex, ingenious, emotionally impactful ways. Some of these examples (e.g. the red jacket in Schindler’s List) have inspired much discourse. What makes this book––by the always-entertaining and -intelligent critic Charles Bramesco––so special is its focus on less-obvious films. A noteworthy case: Hype Williams’ Belly and its “flights of stylistic fancy.” During its hyper-stylized opening, as gangsters Buns and Sin “prowl through the dance floor, ceiling-mounted blacklights make the men look extraterrestrial, their eyeballs glowstick-turquoise against deeper blue skin.” Other entries focus on everything...

Bachelor fans were speculating on Tyler Cameron’s relationship with the model, Paige Lorenze, before they officially went public.
However, shortly after the announcement that the twosome was in fact a couple, the relationship seemed to end.
While Tyler revealed this piece of information during an interview, Paige seemed blindsided by the news.
However, now Paige herself is speaking out about Tyler and their relationship together, and it’s not all good.
While the pair seemed super into each other as they spoke about one another during interviews, and fans saw photos of them on social media, Paige has recently come out and said she’s not sure if it was all real.

While Grammy nominations usually include many commercial picks, the awards pride themselves on being decided by music industry peers judging quality over popularity, even banning chart-related messages in FYC ads recently. So we often can expect a couple of critical darlings to get nominated across genres and sometimes even in the general field. Nominations this past year for Haim’s “Women In Music Pt. III” in Album of the Year and Phoebe Bridgers in Best New Artist are examples of how far acclaim can take you at the Grammys. Granted, we don’t know how this will hold up with no more nomination review committees giving a boost to lower-profile acts. Nonetheless, there are a lot of lauded artists who might surprise us this year.

They’ll star opposite previously announced cast members Odessa A’zion (Grand Army), Michael Vlamis and Tyler Alvarez (American Vandal).

But as the secrets spill, a wild night of fun becomes a cathartic journey of self-discovery.
Winter will play Delaney, who is one to stir the pot, and becomes the focal point of a love triangle. The character plays tough and always knows how to win, but she really just wants her best friend back.

Moroccan director Nour-Eddine Lakhmari – whose trilogy of films, “Casanegra,” “Zero” and “Burnout,” were major local hits – is completing a documentary for the Marrakech Film Festival Foundation, entitled “Turn the Light On,” about the Foundation’s medical-social campaign, that provides free cataract surgery treatment.
The campaign is organized in partnership with the Ministry of Health and the Hassan II Foundation of Ophthalmology and has been in existence since 2009. Lakhmari filmed 310 operations in one week.
A 6-minute teaser from the documentary will be screened in the closing ceremony of the Marrakech Film Festival on Saturday. The final 45-minute version will be released in early 2020.
Lakhmari is also preparing a new feature film about a young woman who runs away from home and moves to a remote village in Morocco. This marks a significant break from the style and themes of his previous films, which revolved around strong male protagonists, street violence and were all lensed in Casablanca.

“I was 15 when I first felt loneliness/Cut my hair, only listened to Loveless,” sings Clairo on “White Flag.” Who can’t relate? My Bloody Valentine’s ur-shoegaze landmark — a deep sonic cave that remains one of the best hiding-from-the-world listening experiences ever — is a fitting namecheck on this beautiful debut, which sounds nothing whatsoever like it. But Immunity does recall the sweet ‘90s moment when the line dividing Diy indie-rock and mainstream pop was wildly blurred, a moment that empowered lots of great art, even as the alt-culture street-cred cops were taking names.

Thirty-four-year-old Meryem Benm’barek, who divides her time between Paris and Morocco, received a standing ovation after the premiere of her debut feature, “Sofia,” in Un Certain Regard in Cannes this year, and won the screenplay award.
The pic is a powerful story about a 20-year-old middle-class girl who is forced to marry the working-class father of her newborn baby, who she hardly knows, to avoid going to jail. It screened at the Marrakech Film Festival this week as part of the Morocco Panorama section.

The pic is a powerful story about a 20-year-old middle-class girl who is forced to marry the working-class father of her newborn baby, who she hardly knows, to avoid going to jail. It screened at the Marrakech Film Festival this week as part of the Morocco Panorama section.

This year’s edition of the Marrakech Intl. Film Festival includes an unprecedented number of Moroccan films, including seven films in the new Morocco Panorama sidebar, and a tribute to local actor/director Jillali Ferhati.
When the festival was launched in 2001, Moroccan cinema was in a relatively fragile state and one of the fest’s key goals was to reinforce the local industry, which now seems to be paying dividends.
Over recent years, Moroccan cinema has enjoyed significant popular success at home and also rising international acclaim, as shown by the fact that several of the films playing in the Morocco Panorama have also screened at fests such as Berlin, Cannes and Venice.
Local filmmakers include both powerful male and female helmers, as reflected in the Morocco Panorama.

The Cairo Film Festival, for its 40th edition, is reinventing itself.
With Egyptian producer Mohamed Hefzy at the helm who, at 43, is its youngest president, the oldest fest in the Arab and African worlds is undergoing a radical revamp in a major effort to get its mojo back after a decade of decline due to the country’s post-revolution turbulence.
Hefzy, who is known internationally for the steady stream of edgy top notch titles birthed by his Film Clinic shingle — most recently Cannes standout “Yomeddine,” which is Egypt’s current candidate for the foreign-language Oscar — is the first Cairo fest chief chosen from within the country’s film industry ranks. Since being appointed in March he has been working incessantly in tandem with respected critic and academic Youssef Sherif Rizkalla, who remains the fest’s artistic director.
Eight months later, the signs of renewal are visible. Starting from a reconfiguration...

It turns out that the producers have just recently added a new, fulltime male character to the mix. I kind of have a feeling that a lot of you might not like this one though. It's because it has to do with the new girl Zoe. A lot of you have expressed that you just really don't like her. For those of you who feel that way, this is going to be really bad news for you. It turns out that the producers have big plans to include her father! That's right. This new male character they're adding is none other than Zoe's dad! He will be played by current "Let's Make A Deal" host Wayne Brady. You guys can view...

Comparisons with Tunisia’s “Beauty and the Dogs” will unfortunately hound Morocco’s “Sofia,” though if parallels must be made, it’s the latter title that comes off as the better film. Both are centered around a nightmarish eve in a young middle-class woman’s life, when mistreatment for perceived lapses in the social contract reach abusive proportions. In the case of “Sofia,” the woman surprises herself and her family when she gives birth out of wedlock and then calculatedly manipulates the situation to her own ends. Debuting writer-director Meryem Benm’barek won the best screenplay prize in Cannes’ Un Certain Regard section, though even without the award, this admirably mordant film deserves to travel widely on the festival circuit as well as art houses beyond its Francophone countries of origin.
Another comparison that springs to mind is “4 Months, 3 Weeks, 2 Days,” both for the way Benm’barek blocks out her...
