Julia Sawalha and Mel Gibson did not reprise their respective roles as Ginger and Rocky. Gibson was not cast due to his past controversies, while Sawalha was told her voice now sounds "too old", a decision she criticized as ageist. Timothy Spall (Nick) and Phil Daniels (Fetcher) were also recast, as well as Benjamin Whitrow (Fowler), who passed away in 2017. However, Jane Horrocks, Imelda Staunton, Lynn Ferguson, and Miranda Richardson did return as Babs, Bunty, Mac, and Mrs. Tweedy.

Crushed walnut shells were used to create road surfaces, while the soil texture on the chicken village set was made from recycled fallen leaves from a leylandii tree outside the studio.
