Slippin' Kimmy
peacedisturber4 March 2020
Warning: Spoilers
These are really interesting twists for Kim's character. We see how she is starting to empathize more with and even join Saul Goodman, because she is seeing how the system is flawed. For those who rated this episode low...I am positive you didn't understand this point.

Everything from the pro bono cases to the trying to help the guy a new place has to do with her realizing that the justice system benefits those in power; those with money. QUITE LITERALLY A BANK is displacing a guy from his home! Quite literally the justice system is prying a little too much into a family dispute. Kim gets taken away from what she finds to be meaningful work all just to further the interests of a BANK! An obvious symbol for what Kim doesn't want to be doing. Remember, she wants to be Atticus Finch. She wants true justice. So, when Saul was playing that daring game of dropping the beer but catching and then Kim went ahead and just threw it, that was an insanely clever unspoken dialogue. As if Jimmy was asking, "What are your thoughts? We gonna break some rules for some fun?" And Kim answer is a deliberate one-not for fun, but because the justice system is actually flawed. So, she is now willing to break the rules, no questions. She realizes exactly what the issue in the justice system is. I just find it very interesting that we have an episode coming up called Wexler vs McGill. Something is gonna go terribly wrong in the next few episodes. This is why this twist really surprised me. Kim is the guy for the job...not just Saul. And Mike apparently is not at all the guy for the job right now. I wonder if Nacho might be who Mike ends up replacing. Like, if Nacho ends up filling the Mike role. Think of the parallels. They both are looking out for the innocents. They both are in it. They both tried to get the Salamancas. They both have played sort of intelligence gathering roles to assist Gus in their endeavors. I am afraid Nacho is gonna do something messed up.

ALSO! To the dude who said Hank had never met Saul until the Breaking Bad timeline, I don't think they ever specified that in any way...so, yeah.

Vince Gilligan, please eat your vegetables
patrickfile4 March 2020
This series is so well paced, for moments even better than Breaking Bad itself. It´s becoming a perfect clockwork.

Breaking Bad: a perfect wild beer. Better Call Saul: a fine intrincated wine.

Best things ever happened to Television in the last 20 years after The X-Files. We should enjoy Vince Gilligan while he is still with us on Earth. I think his best strengh is how well he works with silences. Silence often says as much as words and actions. It´s really a wonder to see anything this guy makes. Please Vince, eat your vegetables and live long.

IT WAS IGNACIO HE'S THE ONE!
hotrobinproductions3 March 2020
Warning: Spoilers
It all comes full circle and seeing characters that serve the story and points characters brought up in BB make more sense in this show is just candy, but it does more than offer candy, it's an entire delicacy, it's not just fan service, everything happens for a reason. Characters like Hank and his side kick coming back is amazing, everyone might argue it's fan service but it's not, if things like this were fan service then they would have forced all these old characters since season 1 but the show REALLY takes its time, the last thing it wants to do is just throw fan service in our face, but this episode proves that when it reveals such service it makes sense and ties into the story PERFECTLY.

Krazy-8!
sammessi-140693 March 2020
Warning: Spoilers
This is coming real close to Breaking Bad. This just told us how Domingo(Krazy-8) became a DEA informant. People saying Hank first met Saul in Breaking Bad so how this? Its not true that Hank first met Saul in BB, they met in BB in the case of Badger and that wasn't the first time. If you have seen the "Better Call Saul" episode of Breaking Bad, it tells that Hank already knew Saul. Guys rating it bad haven't seen Breaking Bad.

Trash in the streets
greggwager4 March 2020
Warning: Spoilers
I admit that I missed last week's very obvious symbols: 1) the lawn gnome that the meth heads leave broken in the street; and 2) Saul's ice cream cone. The slow pan close up shot of the gnome with hat pointing left resembles the same slow pan close up shot of the ice cream cone pointing right. One is toward the beginning of the story; the other ends it.

"The Guy for This" begins with an even closer shot of the ice cream cone as industrious red ants begin to discover the morsel. They scale to the top as if it were some snowy Swiss alp (to the strains, believe it or not, of real Swiss yodelers: Jodlerklub Bärgblüemli Schattdorf's "Jänzigrat-Jüz").

What does it mean? The in-your-face symbols must mean something important. Precious delights left behind in the street transform quickly into trash. The streets are horrible junkyards filled with these once treasured items. Work the streets; trash your stuff; trash yourself.

Always remember that episode 8 of season 2 of Breaking Bad was titled "Better Call Saul" and introduced Saul, the "criminal lawyer." When Walter and Jesse put on ski masks and kidnap Saul, making him kneel before a ditch, Saul mistakes them for another client and calls out to someone at the time we didn't know named "Lalo." It's subtle, but if your TV has captions, you can catch it.

Now the Saul story nears this moment, but will need to have Saul move into his strip-mall office before that happens. Lalo hires Saul and pays him 8 grand. Saul now has enough to move in.

Hank and Gomez are now introduced into the story. Ocho Loco is now their CI (confidential informant).

The scene between Nacho and his father is touching. So is Mike asking the bartender to take down a postcard of the Sydney Opera House (Werner's father worked on it).

Both Kim and Saul end the episode chucking Bock beer bottles off their balcony. Integrity is really beginning to suck for them both. What will they leave behind to become trash in the streets?

Excellent Episode!!
avm-425463 March 2020
Warning: Spoilers
Honestly not going to dive to deep into the episode, the only reason I'm writing this is for the mistaken people who can't remember that Hank and Saul didn't first meet on BB. Re-watch the episode where Badger gets arrested ... They already know of each other and exchange banter about Saul's awful commercials. Saul recognizes that Hank and Gomez are DEA. Re-watch the source if you've forgotten, but don't rate the episode negatively just because you can't remember.

I freaking love Kim Wexler
shaggie963 March 2020
She gets more shade thrown at her than any other character on this show, but she's amazing in my book. Tough, smart, compassionate, sexy. You have to love the never ending struggle between doing the "right" thing and indulging her penchant for mischief. The scenes with her and the old grump were incredible TV.

Saul is breaking (really) bad!
attila-tkcs7 March 2020
Everyone has a first comment. This is mine, because I had to and it's appropriate, this being best episode of the best season of a great show, so far. I've seen the first three episodes of Season 5 tonight. The feel, the pace, the tension has BB written all over it I'm loving it! Even without Mr. White and Jesse. It all just makes sense and I can't wait (but not looking forward to), to see how we lose Kim, Nacho and Lalo. We are in for quite a ride, I'd say.

That last scene tho
raptormau4 March 2020
Warning: Spoilers
I'm in love with the last scene. Not a single word is spoken, but yet you see a broken Kim accepting her true self. Jimmy's comprehension and attitude towards her shows how they are really meant for each other in the sense that they fuels their own character. Looks like they will be in peace with who they are from now on. Absolutely incredible 5th season.

The Guy For This
nebohr23 April 2022
My wife and I begin all reviews with 8 -stars.

The joyous song played during the ants' discovery of Saul's abandoned ice-cream-cone was really sweet. Also: who knew that ants have such heavy feet, right?

We didn't see any disclaimer stating that no ants were injured during the making of this episode.

if a 'Casablanca' Prequel turned Peter Lorre into Humphrey Bogart
TheFearmakers3 March 2020
Warning: Spoilers
They're going the George Lucas route here and forgetting about the source material. Saul meets Hank and Steve for the first time on Breaking Bad, and now they're meeting years earlier? The whole point of Breaking Bad is that Walter drags Saul and Mike and Gus and ALL the characters into HIS world, and his brother in law being a DEA agent is part of Walter's world, and in that he ruins everyone and everything... Having Saul and Hank being former foes just does NOT add up, and if you don't believe me, rewatch BREAKING BAD...

And Kim Wexler was a strong, good character early on, but folks, we need to start getting BAD here because this show WILL HAVE TO end up on BREAKING BAD where Kim is nowhere, and I mean NOWHERE to be found, anywhere. Saul Goodman is a charmless loser who frequents massage parlors and strikes out with his tubby secretary, and here he is with the perfect girl throwing bottles and having sex? C'mon Mr. Gilligan, it's time to listen to Skipper...

What they're doing here is making a Casablanca prequel and turning Peter Lorre into Humphrey Bogart...

Perfection.
eladron4 March 2020
Warning: Spoilers
One of the best episodes in the whole franchise. The ants opening, the bottle closing. The ants are like the cartel world easting up saul's freedom, the broken bottles are what saul's life will look like in the end. Kim is getting closer to a part in herself she tried to hide from and this is dengarous for her. So nice to see the innocent hank, enjoying his work before all the tragic event in the future. Amazing episode

Keeps getting better each season, each new episode.
regexfan4 March 2020
It's weird that one reviewer here on IMDb mentioned that this show is the best thing on TV since the X-Files, because, I kid you not, that's exactly what came to my mind when the new season of BCS started. I've never felt so excited about a TV show like this since the X-Files. Yes, I know, you might argue that there are a lot of good shows out there blah blah, but I'm talking about me. I did watch some shows throughout the years, but nothing got me this excited. The show just keeps getting better each season, each new episode. This is the best episode of the season so far.

As tasty as a scoop of ice-cream
benkrieser3 March 2020
Warning: Spoilers
OHHHH it just keeps getting better and better. From start to finish, this is as good as Chicanery. The beautiful soundtrack by David Porter that accompanies the ants as they eat Saul's ice-cream is gorgeous cinematography and just symbolises that even after everything is going sweet for Saul, its very bitter sweet and has to literally drop everything for Nacho and the cartel. Lalo getting better as every episode goes and seems to be to smart for Fring and Nacho at this point and obviously Michael Mando was brilliant in the crossfire of not just his father but Fring as well.

Definitely the best acting performance I have seen from Rhea Seehorn as she deals with Mr Acker and taps into a darker side of her as she struggles to deal with her own decisions. Mike dealing with the repercussions of last episode as he goes back to old habits and does some classic mike bad-assery.

Yes I have gone over 300 words and havent said it yet. THE THIRD GREATEST Breaking Bad DUO IS BACK (obvs walt and jessie and skinny pete and badger are superior) but yes, Hank and Steve are back and are just......spectacular. Classic comedic remarks from both and to see Gomie, Hank, Krazy 8 and Saul all in the same shot just made me sooooo happy.

I dont know how it gets better and more succinct than this EP but Vince always brings the magic

Rating: 9.75 (rounds to a 10)

Turning point episode!
mm-394 March 2020
Warning: Spoilers
Turning point episode! The Guy for This slowly, but steadily trugs along season five of the series. Mike's hitting bottom with the baggage of the life Mike chose, but still has the skill set. We know something is happen but what? Kim is finding out the hard ships of being a lawyer. The gritty, ugly part of dealing with people goes with being a lawyer is evident! The real main story is Sal. Sal is called by Nacho to do some work! Nacho is doing deeper work for his boss/Gus and wants his father to leave New Mexico. Sal is now in house messenger for the cartel. There is no choice. Sal tries everything to get out. Money passes and the cartel now owns Sal. Introduction of Hank is entertaining. Memorable episode. The minor characters make The Guy for This! The old disgruntled home owner., the bartender, Hank in interrogation, Sal's car ride and the guy who attacked Mike all look and feel real. The minor details mixed into the main story creates on e fine gritty story. 9 stars.

exceptional
adruggan5 March 2020
I have to say after the hiatus from season 4 I was a little worried this season would fall flat.

Yeah,I know.

Easily the best show around at the moment and far better than BB in my opinion.Every single character has a story that's believable and complex. The acting is fabulous and,of course, the writing is fantastic. In this episode the scenes with Kim Wexler were immense.Rhea Seehorn is doing a brilliant job portraying all the conflict Kim is faced with re Saul/Jimmy and her work for Messe Verde. Its just an amazing show and long may it continue.

Unexceptionable Writing
danieldknorr25 June 2022
Much like the last episode, S5E3 has this new look and feel, a look and feel that absolutely does not fit with the show whatsoever. Shot composition is technically better but it ruins the tone and creates really unnatural feeling scenes. Mike Nacho and Kim are all starting to become really uninteresting characters, and Jimmy is becoming increasingly unlikeable. This episode does a lot right but its a step in the wrong direction.

Things are Moving at Breakneck Speed!
bcrisman3 March 2020
Warning: Spoilers
The opening shot of the ice cream being invaded by ants is one of this shows best cold opens for sure. Saul's life as a lawyer for petty criminals was going so well he decided to get some ice cream, right before being pulled into the not so petty criminal world again. The camera work and lighting in the car garage meeting with Lalo was SPOOKY and CHILLING. The way they lit Lalo's face so all you could see was a dark face with little beady lights in his pupils reflecting at the camera made him look like some kind of smiling demon ready to possess Saul. Nacho's Dad Isn't budging, even though he probably should take Nacho's advice on this one. Nacho's story is one of the most unpredictable, because he's so likable and we don't want to see him get killed but things aren't looking too good for him. HANK AND GOMEY. Loved being able to see Saul and hank's first interaction! This is the hank from season 1 of BB, he's full of immature jokes, super cocky but still lovable. Then there is Kim. She had a hard time in this episode but I really love the way Peter and Vince are handling her character this season! I have a suspicion her story will be the most shocking of all by the time this show wraps up! 9.5 / 10

Krazy 8
mawintersus4 March 2020
Warning: Spoilers
The fact that it perfectly filled in a very interesting storyline involving Krazy-8 from the early breaking bad days is just insane. Hanks return was great and the way Saul played it all off was just as charismatic as we would have expected.
