Definitely gets better!
mmyilmazyurt9 May 2021
The show maybe not the best comedy right now but they got me with its two episodes; A Dark Quiet Death and Quarantine.

I've started the show thanks to Danny Pudi and until the 5th episode (A Dark Quiet Death) the show was trying to find its pace. But, 5th episode is one of the best standalone episodes I've seen that is touching lots of elements throughout 30 minutes.

Again, with the Quarantine episode, they turned their disadvantage into an advantage and made a great episode.

Other episodes had their ups and downs but this show still worths a try no doubt.

I hope they will keep their trajectory still because they have a good cast and an opportunity.

Edit: These last episodes "Backstory!" and "Peter" have been such beautiful experiences. Just brought me tears as we witnessed the past of C. W. (Wonderful Murray Abraham) and bringing closure to it in the very next episode.

Stop thinking it is "always sunny"
danethecook13 May 2021
Funny show with a lot of heart. While it is from 2 of the creators of always sunny, it is a completely different show. More reminiscent of silicon valley.

Just when you thought this was a show of nothing except throw away charicatures ... they prove you wrong
pods-593625 June 2021
I always liked (ahem love/hate) this show from the start, but the most recent episode. S2 E6 Backstory (and I HATE backstories) pulled a throwaway character out of the dust bin and made him one of the most import cornerstones of Mythic Quest. Perhaps the emotional content of this episode means nothing to anyone born after say, 1990, but this episode cleverly tied in Mythic Quests, its entire reason d'être, the main character in this episode, and the entire history of online gaming in what - 40 minutes? While the actors of this show deserve a nod for sure, the writers.... I am in awe, and thank you for throwing Michael Bay as an inspiration into the dust bin of history.

The Quarantine Special deserves an Emmy
eppies12 January 2021
It took me until the DQD episode (ep 5) to start falling in love with the show and its characters. I don't know what was going on in the first 4 episodes, but I only stuck with the show because I love the entire Sunny crew (David Hornsby is perfect casting *chef's kiss*, and it's good to see Rob and Charlie working together again) as well as Aparna Nancherla and Naomi Ekperigan.

I don't know what it was about the writing, but the second half of the season brought a little more harmony among a cast that seemed to lack chemistry + initial plotlines that seemed to lack any depth/stakes. The 5th episode was so good (an amazing palate cleanser) and provided a tonal shift that made me feel slightly more aware of the themes of the show as a whole.....

but anyways THE QUARANTINE EPISODE DESERVES AN EMMY. Quarantine episodes for other shows have been hella cringe and forced, but this one was honest in a seemingly effortless way.

Color me impressed
c-johnson09122 July 2022
I am a HUGE fan of Always Sunny. My wife and I watch the series on repeat year round. I must've seen Always Sunny at least 20 times and can quote most the series. While I thought Sunny was a well constructed comedy, I was a little worried that Mythic Quest would be too similar to Always Sunny or not be able to capture the same magic. Boy was I wrong. I have been so impressed with the writing and plot of this series. The comedy is hilarious, the heartwarming scenes warm your heart, and the show is all around fun and entertaining. I only wish more people knew how great it is and I can honestly say I will be recommending it to people as much as I can.

Hilarious, clever with tons of heart

This show is fantastic. The actors all do incredibly at portraying these characters. Storyline and writing is fantastic. You don't have to be a gamer to enjoy this show, but if you are, you'll definitely love it.

It gets better
mozart-478438 February 2020
After first two episodes, it gets better , there is a tone and style change . Some people likes to compare it to Always Sunny , there are similarities, but it's a different show , try to enjoy it as it is !

I kinda went in thinking it would be meh. It's not... it's so good. I'm not into video games but it's so funny.

Great S1, Good S2, Dumpster S3
cloudstrife-0340726 December 2022
I had a hard time rating this show since it had a steady slide and then after Season 2 it just dropped off a cliff. My theory is Rob didn't expect to get that far and didn't really have a plan for what would happen after Season 1, certainly not Season 2.

Ian and Poppy are just fantastic characters and carry the show. The flashback episodes are amazing, especially Season 1's, and this show tackles assumptions and discrimination in the video game industry. I have no idea why they didn't dump Rachel after Season 1 as the character is incredibly obnoxious and detracts from the comedy.

All that said, anyone should watch Season 1 of this series, it is a gem. Season 2 is "meh" and I have no idea what happened with Season 3, I quit after three episodes since it was obvious they lost their way.

Finished season 1. Good watch. It really is the perfect blending of the Office and Grandmas Boy.

Great show, but two different seasons
mikebob1 November 2021
I binged season 1 and was absolutely engaged from the first episode. The comedy around an MMORPG is spot on, and the character interactions are spot on in a hilarious way. Big shout out to Charlotte Nicdao (Poppy) for her excellent performance alongside Rob McElhenney. If you are a fan of gaming in general I think you will enjoy this immensely.

Then I watched season 2 and to me it's a different show. The focus goes almost entirely away from gaming (except for bits here are there), and instead focuses on the inter-office relationships almost exclusively. The humor I enjoyed in season 1 was mostly gone, although the cast's performances we're still great, the writing direction just changed entirely and it's soured my opinion on the show a bit. Maybe COVID affected production plans (as the cast seemed a lot smaller), because the overall tone of the show is just off.

I really hope they turn it around in season 3 and stop with the lovey-gushey (the whole thing between Rachel and Dana seemed so forced). Please focus on a company making or running a game and the hilarious things that can happen around that, and please leave the unnecessary drama out of it. It's called Mythic Quest and not The Office for a reason.

Season 1 - 9/10 Season 2 - 5/10.

Good becomes great after season 1
martywright10 May 2021
I really liked the first season, but from the pandemic special on MQ has really turned things up a notch. It makes me laugh and can also be very moving, the characters are great. Poppy and Brad deserve special mentions for me. Watch MQ, you won't regret it!

Wtf was that 5th episode?!
krupocin-18 February 2020
Overall the show is about a 6.75/10, worth a watch but kind of all over the place in tone. It takes a break for the 5th episode though with an entirely different cast (Jake Johnson, etc) to tell a totally different, unrelated story over 20 years and that episode alone was a solid 9/10.

Why didn't they make that the show and stick with that tone?! It was directed by Rob and written by his sister Katie, so it's not like it was an outside team pulled in to do one episode, and it was amazing, and also very serious unlike the goofy, sitcom vibe of the show. The regular show is entertaining enough, but this story had me invested from the opening scene, reminded me a lot of Halt & Catch Fire. Anyway I would say the show is worth a watch but if you don't have the time just watch episode 5 as a stand-alone.

I loooove Always Sunny but this is so average
JonanthanNewOrleans10 June 2020
I have been a huge fan of Always Sunny for more than ten years so I naturally was hoping to love this show as well, but..

it doesn't feel natural, everything seemed forced, the dialogues and jokes aren't smooth

Unexpectedly funny and entertaining
JustinSookram19 October 2022
I love It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia. So seeing Mac and Cricket in this show I was instantly sold and gave it a chance. There's a similar sense of humor between the two tv series. However there's no character development in its always sunny, but that's what makes it great.

Mythic Quest has characters development and its similar to Ted Lasso. So it has a Ted lasso positive vibe plus it's always sunny dark humor combo.

I'm 4 eps in and I appreciate this show a lot already. Im looking forward to the upcoming seasons. Also from reading the other reviews it looks like it keeps getting better.

This show has soul.
hrishikeshav12 June 2021
Rob is a genius. He knows what the audience want. This show is sometimes funny, sometimes dark, sometimes self-aware, sometimes petty, sometimes moody, sometimes downright hilarious. Sometimes sad and sometimes happy. This is weird show in a good way. This show has a soul and I appreciate rob for his efforts to move himself away from IASIP and create something which seriously competesh with it in terms of standards although tonally very different.

Covid
j_hannel18 April 2021
If you haven't watched the last two episodes of the last season quarantine and everlight. You really should. The writers and cast expertly portrayed the multiple ways people are dealing with this pandemic and I cannot give enough adulation about these productions. A guaranteed viewer from here on out!!!

Funny and well made show
cartsghammond7 February 2020
Mythic quest: Ravens Banquet is part of Apple TV's first go's at original content, and I can't tell you how glad I am that they chose Rob Mcellhenny and Charlie Day to make a show with them. This show looks at the insane ego a person in these positions can get, and how they are willing to sacrifice their employees work conditions to get the results that they want. I'm a huge IASIP fan so I'm familiar with the humor they usually go for. The idea of a video game company isn't something we have never seen before, but every other time it's used as a gimmick without actually knowing how games work. In no way is this a perfect show, but, this is a pretty intelligent show. It's almost to gaming, what Silicon Valley is to tech companies. Some realism is lost through gags and bits but it's one of the most accurate depictions of game studios I've seen. Danny Pudi and David Hornsby are both great in this. So is Rob. This is a quality show. And guys, I know it's not a perfect show, but can you actually give it a go before bashing on it. Thank you

MQ FTW!
anonftwtf7 February 2020
Even without a history of gaming, this show is worth a watch if only to familiarize yourself with the industry while laughing. It has fun and interesting characters that can seamlessly span the distance between silly and serious (mostly silly) without coming across as artificial or preachy. The actors are great and interact well, which left me wishing there were more episodes to binge so I could see how their relationships develop.

I started out just watching a random show in the background while playing an mmo, but it slowly turned into something that drew my full attention as I gradually became completely immersed and invested by the end. Its writing and humor is refreshingly creative, genuine, and original, qualities that are all too rare these days, so I really hope we get to see more episodes soon!

That said, don't let my hype set your expectations too high, there's nothing revolutionary or uniquely exceptional about Mythic Quest... but it got enough right (with nothing wrong) to be my new favorite show.

Painful characters.
shawnn-appel22 November 2022
Warning: Spoilers
Season 1 was a fun watch, but wtf happened after the covid break?!

The female characters are unbelievably painful, I literally skip all scenes with the 2 testers (can't even remember their names). Poppy is meant to be the genius Pro female character but she is easily the worst written and acted character. So loud and not funny at all.

The rest of the cast are fun, just poor writting letting them down. Ahmed is the best, his character is interesting and is acted Perfectly. He needs more screen time.

The 2 episodes with the back story for CW were actually great, so randomly placed in a season that deserved more.

Couple of fun moments but epic ep5 killed the rest of the show
tomthetomtomtom2 May 2021
I started watching this tv show with the expectation of exaggerated and stereotyped characters. And in the end it is exactly that. But still it has really a couple of fun moments that kept me 'binge-watching'. 30min per episode is a good duration for this kind of show.

But then came episode 5. An 'anomaly episode' playing in the past, totally independent to the 'normal' tv show's plot beside the 'gamedev'-topic introducing a completely new cast. And man, this episode has what the usual show have not. Believable characters and a superb screen play with a strong unique main character brillantly portrayed by Cristin Milioti and a very good Jake Johnson. It even switched the genre from comedy to drama. The story has the perfect duration because I also think it would have been hard to keep the tension and chemistry up on that high level over multiple episodes. I simply just love that episode. ;)

After episode 5 I actually wasn't able to reestablish that tiny connection to the 'normal' show again and it just felt dull and stupid. The fun moments seemed also getting less and lesser and I found myself rewatching ep5 before even finishing the complete show. (Can't remember me ever doing something like that ;) ).

All in all I think the show is okay and have a couple of fun moments. But I would advice to remove ep5 from the show and to release it as independent 'short film' (what it obviously is). That would keep the tv show's 'vibe' and the constant decline of fun might not stand out so hard. I can't emphasize enough, that ep5 is exceptional and brilliant, it even made me register here just for writing this.

Funny and enjoyable, especially for gamers.
shaunmcevoy-988335 December 2020
I really had a good time watching this, characters are great.. especially the old guy he's hilarious. From the opening scene I was on board with this, Mythic quest grabbed by full attention within 5 seconds of the pilot. I strongly recommend this, I will be returning for season 2

Soooo close to being a better show
palistineroyal17 May 2021
If they get rid of the corny love stories and focus on characters that work together to create funny scenes, this show would be top notch. I know it's hard to push the story but man they are under utilizing funny characters and showing too much attention to soooo not funny characters i.e. The gamer girls.

Simply Not Funny
mmevanille-5309714 February 2020
What happens when you put a few incompetent egotistical idiots in charge of a gaming company?

This is not Silicon Valley. Silicon valley had obscurity, wit and intelligent dialog. Mythic quest has none of these. There is a trend in US comedies to think that putting a bunch of people with loud voices and strong opinions in one room, constitutes good comedy. It does not. I think it stems from the popularity of Seinfeld, where the plot involves making mountains out of molehills. But unlike Seinfeld, this is not well written. The characters are unlikable, the solutions unrealistic. Being unrealistic isn't usually such an issue for comedy style's, as long as there is a comedic reason to do so. For people who like intelligent humour, this isn't it. And this is coming from a long time gamer.
