The U.K. premieres of Rich Peppiatt’s “Kneecap” and Sean Wang’s “Dìdi” will open and close the 11th edition of Sundance Film Festival: London. Both films won awards at the Sundance Film Festival in Utah in January.
Rambunctious Irish-language film “Kneecap” is the real-life story of how an anarchic Belfast rap trio became the unlikely figureheads of a civil rights movement to save and reinvigorate their mother tongue. “Bursting with unruly energy that practically escapes the confines of the screen, ‘Kneecap’ is a riotous, drug-laced triumph in the name of freedom that bridges political substance and crowd-pleasing entertainment,” reads Variety‘s review of the film. “Kneecap” won the Sundance Film Festival Audience Award: Next in January.
“Kneecap” was produced by Mother Tongues Films and Fine Point Films. The U.K.-Ireland co-production is financed by BFI (awarding National Lottery funding), Screen Ireland, Coimisiún na Meán, TG4 and Northern Ireland Screen,...

Shock-rock legend Alice Cooper has been added to the roster of playable characters in Iron Maiden’s Legacy of the Beast free-to-play mobile game.
The addition of Cooper comes with the new dungeon event “Road Rats Forever,” inspired by his latest album Road. The event will take players down “a desolate highway” with Cooper and Maiden mascot Eddie (in Phantom Eddie form) as they head to their next show. Along the way, they encounter “a gang who’ve turned a derelict gas station into a chop shop” and are forced to “bash a few heads along the way.”
Players can choose from four difficulties for the event and earn Alice Cooper as a playable character upon completion. Alternatively, the Alice Cooper character can be unlocked for free by logging in on any seven days until December 15th, unlocking Cooper himself on the seventh day.

The 2024 Grammy Awards nominees were announced Friday morning (November 10th), and Metallica lead the way among metal acts with three nods.
In the Best Metal Performance category, Metallica’s “72 Seasons” will compete against Disturbed’s “Bad Man,” Ghost’s cover of Iron Maiden’s “Phantom of the Opera,” Slipknot’s “Hive Mind,” and Spiritbox’s “Jaded.”
Metallica’s 72 Seasons LP is up against Foo Fighters’ But Here We Are, Greta Van Fleet’s Starcatcher, Paramore’s This Is Why, and Queens of the Stone Age’s In Time New Roman… in the Best Rock Album category.
And in the Best Performance Song field, Metallica’s “Lux Æterna” will vie with tunes by Arctic Monkeys (“Sculptures of Anything Goes”), Black Pumas (“More Than a Love Song”), boygenius (“Not Strong Enough”), and Foo Fighters (“Rescued”).

Given its vampiric themes and generally spooky vibes, it probably shouldn’t shock you to learn that the Necromancers have quickly become the breakout stars of Diablo 4‘s Season 2 update. Even still, the overall power level of the recently buffed class is really something to see. That’s especially true during the 1-50 leveling process when Necromancers are uniquely capable of just obliterating everything in their way.
Before we get into the best Necromancer build for leveling, though, please note that this is indeed a leveling build. That means it is designed to get you from Level 1 to Level 50 as quickly and smoothly as possible. While you can continue to utilize a version of this build beyond that point, you will likely need to modify it to take advantage of additional resources that become available to you at higher World Tiers. Tiger Leaping To Holiday Frame
India’s Yash Raj Films has set a mid-November release date ahead of the Diwali holidays for “Tiger 3,” its anticipated spy-action film starring Salman Khan, Katrina Kaif and Emraan Hashmi. Holiday complexities have caused the company to devise what it called a “strategic and unique release plan.”
Having previously only released teaser footage, Yrf has now also unveiled a full trailer.
Unusually, the film will open in Indian and international theaters on a Sunday – Nov. 12.
“2023 is the year of ‘Adhik Maas’ which has led to complications regarding festival dates. This year, Monday, Nov. 13 is New Moon/Amavasya and the Govardhan Pooja/Gujarati New Year falls on Nov. 14. Bhai Dooj is on November 15, giving the film an extended run in this crucial holiday period which will aid in collections through the week,” said Yrf.

The historic Power Trip festival kicked off on Friday night (October 6th) in Indio, California. The three-day event features six of the biggest hard rock and heavy metal acts in the world, with two bands performing each night.
Tens of thousands of fans descended upon the Empire Polo Club, the same site where Coachella is held every year. They were greeted by a giant devil-horn-shaped cactus, letting them know that they were in for a weekend of legendary rock music.
Guns N’ Roses and Iron Maiden had the honor of playing the first night, with Maiden taking the stage first at 6:55 p.m., about 10 minutes later than the advertised 6:45 set time.
Instead of playing a “greatest hits” set, as could have been expected at an event such as Power Trip, Maiden stuck with their current “Future Past World Tour” setlist, which features the band playing songs predominantly from their latest album,...

University have shared a new single, titled “Egypt Tune,” ahead of their debut EP, Title Track, due on November 3rd. Listen to the song below.
University are a fairly new band, and they describe their sound as “like getting punched in the face by a gorilla but then being cuddled afterwards.” Listening to the new single “Egypt Tune,” it’s easy to see why they’d say that.
The first portion of the song is built around a beefy, high-energy riff, with the band’s vocalist snarling over top. Then, an interlude brings the energy down, as a guitar provides a softer lick over what could ostensibly be considered a “cuddling with a gorilla” type arrangement, with a fuzzed-out bass and a hard-hitting kick still providing plenty of beef underneath. Finally, they close the nearly-five-minute-long tune with a reprise of the energetic riff from the beginning. Stream the song below.

In August 1971, more than 100,000 football fans packed Mexico City’s Azteca Stadium for a historic tournament. Teams from England, France, Denmark, Argentina and Italy flew in for 21 days of matches alongside Mexico’s national team, while eager sponsors lined up for a piece of the action. The players, who received a hero’s welcome wherever they went, might as well have been the Rolling Stones.
They were, in fact, a group of around 100 women — many of them teenagers — taking part in a pioneering unofficial Women’s World Cup. And just as quickly as they tasted fame, it was snatched away as the tournament was all but erased from football history.

Coco Gauff was doubles number one before, while Jessica Pegula was not but she could be if they win the 2023 Wimbledon trophy.
Both Gauff and Pegula had dreamed about being Wta number one and while neither achieved it in singles, Gauff did in doubles . Pegula didn't as of yet but she could if she and Gauff win the Wimbledon trophy.
It's in striking distance, especially after Barbora Krejcikova and Katerina Siniakova withdrew from the event. It was a good start for them as they won their opening match though it wasn't really a perfect match.
They rarely play a perfect match, singles or doubles, but in the end, winning ultimately matters. It was good to see them back together on the court as the last time we saw them share a court was when they played recently.
Gauff won that match but also crashed out early at Wimbledon while Pegula...

Two-thirds of the route to a great documentary is the subject matter - and Alex Holmes certainly knows how to spot it. He previously brought Tracy Edwards against-the-odds yacht race tale to screen in Maiden and he’s alighted on another great fight-amid-adversity story with the career of Greg LeMond.
In recent years, the documentary arena surrounding cycling and the Tour De France has mostly focused on the negative side of the sport, thrust into the spotlight by shamed doping-scandal cyclist Lance Armstrong (Holmes himself previously directed Stop At Nothing: The Lance Armstrong Story). Here, with the determined but personable Tour De France winner LeMond, the documentarian offers the flipside of that.
The structure of the documentary itself is formulaic but well executed. LeMond appears as a talking head interview against a tranquil blue background, driving his story from his first go at cycling to the most remarkable win of.

Two of metal’s most iconic mascots — Iron Maiden’s Eddie and Anthrax’s ornery flatbill-cap-wearing Not-Man — are joining forces for the Among the Living in-game event in Maiden’s Legacy of the Beast mobile game.
For this latest dungeon event, the plot of Anthrax’s recent Among the Living graphic novel serves as the premise, as players venture through the wreckage of a recently destroyed New York City. Not-Man is out for revenge, and he’s got Eddie in tow.
“We couldn’t be happier to be featured in this game,” commented Anthrax, who join an esteemed group of major bands that have appeared in Lotb.
The band continued: “When the idea came up, we were completely taken aback by it, like, ‘Are you serious?’ You have Eddie, one of the greatest mascots of all-time, and the Not-Man. When you see the Non-Man’s face, you identify it with Anthrax.

Exclusive: Roadside Attractions has acquired North American rights to The Last Rider, the story of cycling legend Greg LeMond, who came back from a near death experience to win his sport’s greatest race.
LeMond remains the only American man to win the Tour de France, a feat he accomplished three times – in 1986, 1989 and 1990 (Tour victories by Americans Lance Armstrong and Floyd Landis were vacated after they admitted using banned performance-enhancing drugs). Remarkably, LeMond’s second and third Tour de France wins came after he was nearly killed in a hunting accident, in which his brother-in-law accidentally blasted him with a shotgun, hitting LeMond with 60 pellets. He lost 65 percent of his blood, but somehow survived.
The documentary directed by Alex Holmes will be released in theaters on June 23.
Greg LeMond races in the Tour du Pont in Washington, DC May 14, 1992.

Believe it or not, but in the time before the internet it was possible for media to actually disappear. In that dark era, nothing felt more temporary than television.
While film existed on reels, books in print, and music on vinyl, television was but a mere signal that broadcast into your living room. Like a ghost, it was right in front of your face one second and gone forever the next. Without a world wide web to obsessively catalog it, so much of television felt like it was purely a one-time experience. And for folks of a certain age (i.e. the absolutely ancient creatures running this website) this often meant having a surreal TV memory that you were sure you were the only one in the world to have ever witnessed…until the internet came along to assure you otherwise.

“The Maiden,” Graham Foy’s finely tuned story of adolescent mythmaking, togetherness and grief, has its world premiere Tuesday in Venice Days before heading to Toronto, but the film’s impressive international journey actually began in Cannes two years ago.
Based in Toronto since 2008, Foy grew up in suburban Calgary where “Maiden” is set, spent teenage summers near the graffiti-covered railroad bridge and ragged ravine, where much of the film was shot, and, like one of the characters, was an avid skateboarder.
He had been tapping away at the “Maiden” script — which draws from his experiences but is not autobiographical — for several years when his short “August 22, This Year” was selected for the 2020 Cannes’ Critics’ Week.
“It was the year the pandemic shut down Cannes, so we couldn’t go, but the festival did a lot for the filmmakers,” said Foy, who spoke to Variety from Venice last week, in advance of the festival.

London-based documentary specialist Dogwoof has deepened its involvement with “Copa ’71,” directed by Rachel Ramsay (“Clarkson’s Farm”) and James Erskine (“Billie”).
Dogwoof financed the project’s development through its production vehicle TDog and will now take it to market at the upcoming Cph:forum, Cph:Dox’s financing and co-production event, in March.
“Copa ’71” recounts the story of the 1971 Women’s World Cup, one of the most successful female soccer tournaments of all time, where lavish sponsorship, extensive TV coverage, merchandise on every street corner and over 100,000 fans turned the historic Azteca stadium in Mexico City into a cauldron of noise while a fawning media treated the players like rock stars. Exclusive: Former Formula One champ Damon Hill is the subject of a new documentary from Alex Holmes, director of BAFTA-nominated doc biopic Maiden.
The feature will explore the story of how Damon Hill overcame the tragic death of his father, Formula One icon Graham Hill, and set himself the challenge of becoming world champion in one of the world’s fastest and most dangerous sports. It will chart a son’s life-long search to understand his father set against the backdrop of two contrasting eras of the sport, and how Damon wrestled with his father’s legacy.
With the support of Damon Hill, and the Hill Estate, the filmmakers will use Hill’s intimate family archive as well as archives featuring the glamorous but highly dangerous era of 1960s motorsport and the intense on track rivalries of 1990s Formula One icons Schumacher, Senna and Prost.
Production is due to start later this year.

Mandy Chang, the head of BBC documentary strand Storyville, is stepping down after four years in the role to join super-indie Fremantle as global head of factual.
Chang, whose role was officially commissioning editor of Storyville and acquisitions, will stay in the post until August, though recruitment for the role will begin in due course. At Fremantle, Chang will oversee the strategy and creation of Fremantle’s new factual arm, reporting into group COO Andrea Scrosati. The super-indie has been investing heavily in unscripted in recent years, launching shows such as Samuel L. Jackson’s “Enslaved” as well as documentary series “Punk.”

It’s not unusual for Capcom to hide Resident Evil‘s biggest plot points until we actually play the game, but the mysterious nature of Resident Evil Village‘s story and setting are significant even by this series’ standards.
However, no Resident Evil Village mystery is more noteworthy than the unanswered questions surrounding the game’s villains. While we’ve seen numerous baddies in the Resident Evil Village previews and trailers released so far, we still don’t have a clear idea of who is actually the big bad behind it all and why so many elements of the game have such a decisive supernatural quality to them.
While it’s again likely that the answers to those questions won’t come until we play Resident Evil Village, feel free to join us as we break down the Resident Evil Village villains that we’ve seen so far in an...

New Works Provincetown has commissioned its second and third projects. The developmental theater lab will help support a new play by Kevin Powell (“The Education of Kevin Powell: A Boy’s Journey into Manhood”), developed with and directed by Oliver Butler (“What the Constitution Means to Me”). It has also commissioned a new musical, “Maiden Voyage,” from composer Carmel Dean (“Renascence”) and lyricist/playwright Mindi Dickstein.
“Maiden Voyage” is inspired by the true story of the 1989-1990 Whitbread Round the World Yacht Race, in which the first ever all-female sailing team battled sexism to complete a grueling endurance test. This story was also chronicled in the recent, acclaimed documentary “Maiden.”
Kevin Powell’s untitled play will explore the question of what is a man?

Exclusive: Documentary filmmaker Alex Holmes is going from the world of boat racing in his critically acclaimed pic Maiden to the world of cycling with Last Rider, which chronicles the story of Greg LeMond. The director will team with Mrc Non-Fiction for the production. James Erskine and Victoria Gregory are set to produce on behalf of New Black Films.
Last Rider follows the story of LeMond, who came back from the brink of death after a hunting accident to win the closest race in the history of the Tour de France. He remains the only American to have won the race without performance-enhancing drugs.
“The 1989 Tour de France was one of the most thrilling spectacles in sport,” said Holmes. “It pitted LeMond, the only American ever to have won the tour, against the great French champion Laurent Fignon. It was a race that tested not only their physical endurance but their mental strength.

After Universal ran to premium VOD at the first opportunity, other distributors were quick to follow suit. Sony trotted out “Bloodshot,” while Disney offered “Onward,” Searchlight presented “Downhill,” and Warner Bros. sold “The Way Back.” However, if there’s going to be a last man standing for theatrical exhibition, it’s Sony Pictures Classics co-president Tom Bernard, who has no interest in exploring the Pvod trend.
“That’s no place to play them,” said Bernard. “Everything starts with exhibition. When the virus is gone, when it’s safe, people will come back to theaters.”
Spc’s sexy European mystery-thriller “The Burnt Orange Heresy” opened in theaters March 13, only days before the pandemic closed theaters across the country. That same day, Focus opened “Never Rarely Sometimes Always,” which will now go to Pvod April 3. Bernard and partner Michael Barker will bring “Heresy” — and all the others on their spring schedule — back when theaters open again.

For female filmmakers in the industry, this year’s round of Oscar nominations – in which acclaimed female-helmed films such as “Hustlers” and “The Farewell” were shut out in place of male-directed Best Picture nominees predominantly centred on stories of white men – told a frustratingly familiar story. But in the Academy’s non-fiction branch, a different narrative was being written.
Not only did the Best Documentary Feature category achieve directorial gender parity, with four female and four male nominees, but female filmmakers led men overall, with 13 nominees to 12 across both feature and doc short categories.
The branch celebrated newcomers such as Waad al-Kateab (“For Sama”), Tamara Kotevska (“Honeyland”) and Smriti Mundhra (“St. Louis Superman”); mid-career filmmakers such as Sigrid Dyekjær (“The Cave”) and Joanna Natasegara (“The Edge of Democracy”); and established documentarians such as Julia Reichert (“American Factory”).
The latter duo both achieved remarkable feats that garnered little mainstream press coverage:...

Sam Mendes has been named the best feature-film director of 2019 by the Directors Guild of America, which handed out its annual awards on Saturday at the Ritz-Carlton in Los Angeles.
The win makes the “1917” director a commanding front-runner in the Oscar race for Best Directors — and coupled with his film’s victory at the Producers Guild Awards last week, makes the World War I drama the favorite to win Best Picture winner as well.
Mendes beat his fellow Oscar nominees Bong Joon Ho (“Parasite”), Quentin Tarantino (“Once Upon a Time … in Hollywood”) and Martin Scorsese (“The Irishman”), as well as “Jojo Rabbit” director Taika Waititi.
The DGA Award is one of the most reliable Oscar predictors, with the winner going on to win the Academy Award for Best Director for the last six years in a row, 15 times in the last 16 years and 62 times in 71 years.

The Directors Guild of America announced only a handful of nominations on the TV front on January 6, after a glitch in voting. Jill Soloway, who won in 2015 for helming “Transparent,” was left off the ballot for the series finale. So the guild is letting its members recast their votes in that category. The DGA will reveal the results of that on Friday, along with the nominees for drama series and specials. (The feature film nominations are still a go for Tuesday.)
Among Monday’s nominations, “Fosse/Verdon” led the way with three bids in the TV Movie or Limited Series race: Emmy nominees Thomas Kail and Jessica Yu are joined by Minki Spiro. Emmy champ Johan Renck (“Chernobyl”), Emmy nominee Ava DuVernay (“When They See Us”) and Vince Gilligan (“El Camino: A Breaking Bad Movie”) round out the race.

It was a strange morning for the Director’s Guild of America (DGA) Monday, as the organization announced some — but not all — of the TV nominations for the 2020 DGA Awards.
A note included in the official nomination statement explained that the nods for the Comedy Series, Dramatic Series, and Variety/Talk/News/Sports — Specials categories will be announced on Friday, rather than today as scheduled, due to an error related to the organization’s newly implemented electronic entry submissions process. The categories in question require a re-vote, the DGA explained. Variety reported last week that the DGA sent members an email stating that “Transparent” creator Jill Soloway had been mistakenly omitted from the comedy series ballot for her direction of “Transparent Musicale Finale,” and advising members to recast their vote in the category if they so chose.
Still, there were plenty of accolades to go around in the official announcement,...
