An exciting adventure with assassins, mountain people and armies in China
MovieWarfare12 May 2020
Unlike Rurouni Kenshin live action movies, I have no idea about the source material. I know it has 3 seasons of anime right now but I haven't really considered giving it a read or watch. I stumbled upon this movie after looking into any other Japanese movies based on manga and this came up.

The basic premise is a once slave boy named Xin (Kento Yamazaki) unites with a king Ying Zheng (Ryo Yoshizawa) to help him reclaim his throne from his evil younger brother Cheng Jiao (Kanata Hongo). They battle assassins, mountain people and huge armies in China.

My first praise is the story which is pretty well told and intriguing enough to keep me invested. The story isn't the most original and is clearly inspired by chinese stories but it is pace very well so that the audience themselves are ever really bored. This maybe in part thanks to the movie using a lot of Star Wars wipes which surprised me at first but it keep things moving along. They do use it a lot but The stakes are also clear and very high which is compelling enough to make the third act feel really desperate and urgent. It also seems to be following the source material faithfully according to fans of the source material so in a way that is a plus.

The set and costume design did a phenomenal job in making it seem like a China from B.C. which is in part thanks to them filming it in China. Despite the relatively low budget they still managed to make every costume feel authentic. The soundtrack is also quite good in bringing the scenes to life with its orchestral score but there isn't any real memorable soundtrack like with the Rurouni Kenshin films. Although, it does have a ONE OK ROCK song in the credits just like the Rurouni Kenshin films.

The action scenes are not on the level of Rurouni Kenshin movies but they are still fun to watch nonetheless. One difference is that they are much more over the top with ridiculous jumping and huge crazy beat down characters take but this is part of the charm of Kingdom. There is a moment in this film where Xin hits an assassin with a sword and he bounces on 4 different bamboo trees, it's as ridiculous as it sounds but entertaining to watch.

The cast also do a great job in bringing the characters from the manga to the big screen in a very accurate portrayal. This does end up creating a weird issue for me though. Xin (Kento Yamazaki) and HeLiao Diao (Kanna Hashimoto) are two of the main characters and they are performed like the source material with anime-esque personality. However, Ying Zheng (Ryo Yoshizawa) is performed in a more grounded performance. This isn't only with the main leads though but with 70% of the cast giving more believable grounded performance but 30% giving an over the top anime performance. It's mildly jarring and creates a weird tonal problem of the film with these contrasting performance. The film is definitely fun with its goofy action scenes but the goofy performances tend to be hit or miss depending on the scenario. In my opinion, one goofy character is fine but a lot can be a bit too much.

The film also overly indulges in a lot of flashbacks especially with Xin and his bromance friend Piao. Some the flashbacks feel necessary but near the end it gets a bit repetitive with it constantly reminding us that Piao inspired Xin. The film also kind of paints war a bit light heartedly which I feel clashes with the overall message of the film. Since its based on a long running manga which has 57 volumes, it ends with a very clear sequel bait ending instead of a conclusive ending. So if this movie doesn't get a sequel the ending will be mildly annoying.

In the end, the movie is a still a very good time. It's a high energy movie that moves along at a great pace without stumbling towards the finish line. It's colorful, fun, exciting and ultimately an entertaining ride of a film. You will come out enjoying it and that seems to be what the director was aiming for which in that case it succeeds very well.

A Kingdom for ... a Kingdom?
kosmasp21 February 2020
Now I do have a soft spot for Shaw Brothers movies. And while this isn't one, the nostalgia might creep up while watching this. It's quite a throwback to the glory days of Eastern movies. That also means, this has some major flaws, as did the "originals". Characters are a bit thinly drawn, but there is so much action happening you might not mind anyway.

Stunts, action and camera work are really good. The predictibility of the story does not matter that much or rather shouldn't matter that much. You know what this is, treat and watch it as such

the setting is the highlight
huiyicl22 January 2022
Nice production, great setting (the warring states period of China)! Overly expressive however, as common in Japanese cinema. But this adds to its charms, and certainly should not bother the viewer. Especially not if one has seen their fair share of Japanese cinema.

Good idea spoiled by the main character's acting
sashairk10 January 2021
I love historical movies, including the films about the history, either real or fictional, of the Asian countries. And so I had high expectations of spending a nice evening by watching another Asian historical movie. Alas, my expectations were ruined by the totally annoying acting, or should I say - over-acting, of the main character. His grotesque bulging eyes, yells and totally stupid demeanor, either caused by the script or his own 'contribution' to it made it so irritating that me and my wife could not watch it for more than first 20 minutes.

Overacting and uninteresting lead ruin an otherwise good action film
amerh17 August 2019
He grunts. He screams. Then he screams again.

Kento Yamazaki overacts and over emotes in every scene, specially in the first half. To show grief, anger, surprise or any other emotion, he has only one register: He screams loudly. And he grimaces. He hams it up. He acts unintelligent but determined, a gritty stubborn brainless dolt. His dialogue is also childish, culminating with the cliched speech about the power of dreams during his last major fight scene. Would you ramble on about the power of dreams when fighting a mortal adversary?

He fast becomes very annoying. And since he's the central character, he ruins the movie for me.

It is too bad, because there is a lot to like in this movie. Great fight scenes, great choreography, impressive settings, hundreds of soldiers, interesting adversaries with original looks and fighting techniques. Some very good second role actors, specially Masami Nagasawa and Takao Osawa. The director, Shinsuke Sato, has become know for his manga adaptations, and this movie is a specially faithful adaptation of the first part of Yasuhisa Hara's manga. If it wasn't for the poor dialogue and overacting, this would be a very fun Wuxia movie.

Because of these fun elements, I hesitated a lot before knocking my rating down . Then came the last scenes, glorifying the forceful unification of China (in this age of Hong Kong, Taiwan and Yughur troubles). These scenes were completely unnecessary, and probably placed in the movie to support a larger Box Office performance in China.

Not recommended.

A boy supported Qin's unification behind the history.
Aoi_kdr3 June 2019
Takao Osawa's performance was wonderful! It was so weird! (just compliment) After watching this, how do I see him? What should I think of my memory that I cried a lot like a child in old drama? He was suited a bronze pike better than a 'Shield of Straw.'

This movie is based on a historical fiction comic that depicts Qin's unification of China in 221 BCE. It's already been about 3 years since I wanted to read it. I didn't expect I watched the movie before reading! Although I dislike Japanese movies, I went to a theator with my mother who was crazy for Ryo Yoshizawa.

From the last half, I was so excited! At first, to be honest I felt boring because of Japanese unique elements : CG, the overacting and etc... But the development of the last half gave me heat up like a manga for boys! What controls people is also people.

I felt it like a digest of TV dramas. I felt the wipes of scenes worse. Thus it had some holes that threw a wet blanket on the story. But actually I just enjoyed it so much because I watched it without spoiler.

Now, the golden week( a national long holiday in Japan) has finished and the kingdom week has begun...!

Kinda disappointed but still might be worth for some fans out there
danne_960923 March 2022
Warning: Spoilers
As a huge fan of the anime and the manga i was really dissapointed with the main character. I really wanted this movie to be good and love it but i couldnt stand the main characters over acting. I know Xin is kinda behaving this way in manga/anime but he acted way to much like a thug and was a bit to angry all the time aswell. Also Did he really have to have these weird expressions and acting like a thug almost every scene? That really destroyed alot of the scenes for me.

As an example the scene where they are meeting the mountain tribe and Sei ''the king'', is trying to get convince the mountain people to fight for him but is having a hard time, xin starts to talk and has this really good moment in the anime where he manages to influnce the mountain tribe to help the king and even though Xin kinda acts like a idiot all the time he sometimes can speak very well and influence people but here in the movie he acts like a brute and his facial expressions just doesnt work with the scene at all and the scene is not nearly as good.

Well even though im dissapointed with the main character acting i still enjoyed alot of the moments in the movie, so i would still recommend it to kingdom fans out there to give it a try!

Accurate (this manga adaption not just based history only)
kevinsinar11 April 2020
First of All... The Story, The cast are really good.. kingdom is based on history about Xin, slave who dream about being the great general under heaven.. The story is not 100% accurate but still based on history, Xin in history is not really recorded thats why author has freedom to write but he is exist.

Then this is made based the manga thats why there are many overacting n else like Xin scream and else.. logically its not logic but based on manga its really accurate, kento played xin really well.. they made it as dramatic as the manga.. if u watch while thinking as stand alone moviee based in history only maybe u will disappointed but i read the manga n watch the anime.. this really cool. Im satisfied with the fight scene.. tho its not perfect but it executed really well, this is just beginning,

the fun is there when xin climbing from foot soldier into general.. i hope it has sequel

Good story and script spoiled by main actor
DeadlyBaazigar3 August 2023
This movie has all the elements of what you would expect from a movie like this. Action, story, history, interesting characters etc. Its all there.... except the main character's actor goes out of his way to just spoil everything with his over the top acting. I'm not sure how the director didn't just tell him to turn it down a notch or two but at points you just find it hard to take him seriously and are stunned that this is the protagonist and the one you're supposed to be backing and taking seriously. I remember watching the same actor in another show he did called Alice in Borderland and he carries the same over the top acting from there. The difference is over there he is surrounded by children so it its ok, while here in a historical piece, he doesn't match the role at all. I'm certain this movie rating would have been 7.5-8 overall if it was cast by a different lead.

Way too much screaming and overacting and too much drama
redhawk-707071 September 2020
I was hoping this would be an action packed war movie, and it was in some ways. But the constant emotional cry/screaming drove me absolutely insane by the end of the movie, so much so I didn't even finish the last 15 mins of the movie. It was unbelievably predictable, the lead character was uninteresting who was constantly screaming and yelling for long periods of time. There was more drama in this movie than anything else. If you took out all the screaming, crying, flashbacks, and talking in between fighting (super unrealistic) you could condense this movie into a short 30 min movie and you would still get all the important parts of this movie. I went into this movie expecting to enjoy it, and ended it early because it was that boring and annoying. It could have been such a better movie than it turned out to be because the plot of the movie was good. I would advise skipping this movie unless your into drama war movies where there's almost non stop crying and screaming and very little action.

A Chinese historical movie made in Japanese ? You better believe it
phanthinga17 October 2019
The long await live-action movie based on the famous manga of the same name KIngdom is finally here and as a fan of the manga, all I can say is "Good fricking job director Shinsuke Sato because you just successfully bring life to another beloved property without heavily rely on the source material". As far as a live-action adaptation can go Kingdom is very faithful to the source material from the characters to the events with some minor changes that I really appreciate it but the biggest disappointment I have with the movie is how tame it is in term of violence and carnage compare to the manga and if they want to continue the story they better jacked up the bloody meter because after the first big arc the next one gonna be an all-out Dynasty Warrior battle scale

Don't take it seriously
bgdyar12 January 2024
Despite what the trailer shows, there are zero epic battles. There are hardly any "screenshot-worthy" scenes either--less than ten. It's also extremely over-dramatic and half an hour too long at least.

But it's fun.

I have tried half a dozen times to get into the anime, but I cannot force myself to enjoy something with that "quality" of animation, and beyond that even the loud-mouthed, obnoxious, and totally-unrelatable protagonist spoil enjoyment. I can't commit my time to seeing a grouchy child not be smacked to pieces by the adults in the room.

This movie, sadly, has the same unworthy protagonist, but at least I can say that the producers translated that perfectly and the main actor followed instructions to the t. It is, however, entertaining. No modernization at all, no attempt to shoehorn contemporary mores into a story older than Jesus, no deeper meaning other than being fun.

That's what a movie should be. Kingdom is fun to watch. While the details are obviously skipped over because of its format, the rags-to-general story clearly takes its shape. The side characters, despite no backstory, are all acted flawlessly so their motivations are natural and slot with expectations rather well. Good directing makes the "feel" seem more Western than Eastern, but that's good in my book as the Western style is more palatable.

I can recommend this is you want to be entertained and can look past its flaws. It is not arthouse, it's not a HanCinema kind of deal, but it doesn't need to be. Definitely going to binge the second movie right now.

Boy will always be a boy..
ahao7627 August 2020
Warning: Spoilers
First 10 minutes i wanted to stop watching this movie already... OMG.. I thought they are trained so someday they will be somebody great... But no... They have no mentor or teacher.. They just monkey around swinging tree trunks from kids to teens.. Wow.. They became expertise in martial arts just like that... Is that even possible? That is so childish plot.. Even Bruce Lee took years of learning from a master before he is inspired to create his own martial arts.. Not jumping around like monkeys and suddenly become a martial art expert.. Producer shouldn't make this movie of the Qin Kingdom... Instead Journey to the west suits this 2 monkeys better.. The Monkey King is born with skills, there is no argument on that.. Problems solved.. Able to fight without learning anything... And it's still a King.. See without even thinking i can suggest better plot.. If you are below 15.. Maybe its for you...

Only Thing Missing Were Dragons
westsideschl5 March 2020
A Japanese mostly fantasy action telling of how the warring states (~400BCE) were soon to become a single state under Qin called China. Another immense scale production where at one brief point we see (by a character's account 80,000 warriors, but I counted a little over 103,000) anyway, it's mostly very fantasy sword play where a deposed leader comes back w/an odd lot to regain the crown from a nasty brother & potentially unite the kingdoms. The only thing missing in this drama was a cameo by a dragon. Seemed very China censorship positive of a founding country nationalism tale of good over evil, but just as likely it's bad/evil over badder/eviler.

Historical Epic at Its Finest!
alisonc-128 July 2019
Xin (Kento Yamazaki) and Piao (Ryo Yoshizawa) are slave children in China in 255 BC, but both teach themselves swordfighting (using sticks) together and vow to become great generals, somehow. One day, a powerful lord comes to their farm and picks Piao to go with him to the palace, leaving Xin behind. Xin continues to train on his own, determined to catch up to Piao one day, but instead Piao returns to the farm, fatally wounded. It seems he was chosen simply because he looks exactly like the King of Qin, Yin Zheng (also Ryo Yoshizawa), and Piao was killed in place of the king by the king's evil younger brother, Cheng Jiao (Kanata Hongo), who has more royal blood than Zheng and therefore believes he has more right to the throne. Xin vows revenge and takes off on an adventure, which leads him straight to Zheng and more trouble than he'd ever imagined....

It's a bit odd that an historical Chinese epic has been made by the Japanese film director, Shinsuke Sato, based on a Japanese manga, but it works really well. Sato has been described as the Japanese Steven Spielberg, which is to say he knows how to stage epic fights, glorious spectacle and resonating themes of friendship, loyalty and the struggle against oppression. A bit long at 2 1/4 hours or so, but the motivations of the main characters and the arc of the story are never lost or bogged down in too much detail; I've left out a slew of characters (including a very important female character) in the above description, but really that's all you need to know. If you like epic battle scenes featuring lances and arrows and, especially, swords, you'll love this feature!

Vascal28 October 2019
Warning: Spoilers
Kento Yamazaki acting were overrated. He scream and contemplating the universe all the time. the character is to rude and stupid, one pheasant wont be dare to talk like that to a king, if a king doesn't have charisma to control one pheasant maybe he doesn't deserve to be a king. the king man were not moving like an army, they move like bunch of ronin, even the mountain man were more coordinated in attack and defense than the king soldier, its so silly. some scene in the movie were good, but it all ruined by the main character

Good Enough
PennyReviews21 October 2019
As one of the most anticipated movies of 2019, " Kingdom " did not disappoint.

Maybe I should start with those things that I didn't really like about this movie. First of all, there were some scenes were the movie was trying to be too much of an anime live action and so the performances were over the top. Also, the ending was not as magnificent as the whole movie was paving it to be. It just felt too easy, too simple. But there is still room for improvement, as the story left some things unsolved.

Overall, the movie was entertaining, nevertheless. The performances were pretty good and the action scenes well choreographed and enjoyable. The CGI were good too and the story's pace was fast and suited the mood of the movie.

So, eight out of ten.

Kingdom - childish epic
joebloggscity13 November 2023
Big scale battle epics are ten-a-penny nowadays, and can be a mixed bag. There's been a bunch from the far east, which most often are grand in scale & scope. This one though is a dud.

We have a poorly written fantasy tale about a 'nice' king who is usurped by his immoral brother, and takes on the services of some heroes to help win him back his kingdom.

Really, it's not much point going on. What this film does have in wonderfuly aesthetics, colour, design and action choreography, it spoils with dreadful dialogue and acting. The lead protagonists are the most unconvincing heroes I've seen in any movie for a long while, even taking in that it's a fantasy film. One walks around in an owl costume with a blowpipe! Seriously!

I'd say best leave this on the side. I'm amazed they've made a sequel!

Good Adaptation
tomhacker-7070021 June 2020
I think, it is a really good adaptation of the first part of the anime. Matching characters (Sure over the top acting because of anime-adaptation), good choreographie, good soundtrack, good atmosphere and really nice costumes/filmsets.

Like the anime, it is not historical accurate, but didn't expect it to be.

For the first time I think, I am not dissapointed seing an anime converted into a film with actors. It really gets close to its roots (didn't read the manga, so only compared to the anime) and the characters I saw years ago in the anime could be easily recognized and totally got the same personality.

Plenty of action
Leofwine_draca5 November 2023
KINGDOM is the first in a trilogy of manga adaptations that offer us a Japanese slant on China's 'warring states' era. The film features both the star and director of ALICE IN BORDERLAND, a show whose both seasons I've enjoyed, so it was a pleasure to see them teaming up again for a very different beast. Although the running time is two and a quarter hours, this packs plenty of swordplay and inventive action into its running time, with pleasing fantasy elements and a story told on a grand scale. The cast are well chosen and the plot carefully balances smaller and larger events. There's a lot of cliche along the way, but when it has this much energy that doesn't matter.

I haven't seen the manga this is based on, but as a standalone film I loved it! It has just the right amount of heart-warming cheese (like chasing your dreams and never giving up), great action / sword fighting scenes and funny moments. 100% recommend you go watch it.

I really loved this manhwa and was so disappointed with the anime
ArielSol26 January 2024
Warning: Spoilers
I was relieved to see a live action retelling of the sweeping manhwa. I was so good, even in a bootleg translation, that I really wanted to see this tale done justice to. Unfortunately, the half drawn, half cgi anime was just impossible to watch - I just couldnt enjoy it - but the movie, while not taking in the whole gallery of characters the writer creates, does a great job with those it does present. Excellent job! I'm so happy this great story got another chance in live action!

If you like korean manhwa or anime, I urge you to try this story. The books currently have something like 700 chapters - maybe more since I can only read the translated editions - and follow an orphan boy named Shin. He's not your typical hero - he is, in fact, a bit of an idiot, though he runs into some amazing characters from Chinese history. It's set in the warring states period of ancient China where a young man who will one day become the nation's first emperor has been ousted from his position by his own brother. One of this king's 'doubles' was a boy who grew up as a farm slave with Shin and the two became proficient at swordplay by constantly battling each other. When Shin's friend, Hyou, was recognized as a doppelganger of the king, he was recruited for that duty until he returned to the village, mortally wounded, to beg his friend to serve his king and defend him from assassins. Shin does, because it is his friend's dying wish, but he's not one to automatically bow down to any king. One of the most charming things about the hothead Shin is that he has much wiser people around him and the's not quite stupid enough to ignore them - the king, well done by the man who also plays Hyou, and a the mercenary named Ten, who they won't figure out is a girl until way into the manhwa's double digit chapters. Worth a watch, and I am going to do it again.

Great adaptation of a MANGA !!
omarhirs5 February 2024
It seems like the majority of the people that gave it a bad score is because they thought they were coming into a historical movie not knowing this is based on a manga. I can also tell that they never watched the anime and don't know that Kento is actually portraying Xin the way it is supposed to. In my opinion they not only did great with the costumes, locations and casting. They all did a great job playing these crazy characters from A MANGA turned ANIME and now a LIVE ACTION MOVIE. I would tell you to read or watch the anime first if not you will probably think the same as the people that wrote those bad reviews. I actually can't wait for part 4 and 5. Once again this is not a 100% historical movie.
