another very fine performance by Robert Forster
rshawis5 April 2020
It was so good to see Robert Forster deliver the goods in one of his last acting roles. I found this episode very entertaining. I loved the relationship between Grandpa and the grandson, and really enjoyed how they brought the vintage comic book era in as part of the plot.

Warning: Spoilers
So I've watched all three episodes so far and this 3rd episode was not as good as the first and remarkably better than the second (the second was just jaw dropping bad). But damn, it would be nice if Spielberg maybe at least helped these guys/gals who write this stuff come up with something at least a little bit original.

So grumpy grandfather gets a ring from the past and gets super strong and then of course makes amends with his family because apparently he's been a crap of a father his entire life. That's it. That's the story. Nothing else. That's absolutely all there is.

Come on AppleTV you really need to do better than this because I sure as hell wouldn't pay for this crap once my free year subscription is up.

Not horrible, but okay.

This episode was cute. There's nothing much to say about it. It was a cute story, but it was predictable at times.

A return to the past and a ring that has powers of magic and strength!
blanbrn21 March 2020
This episode 3 from the new "Apple TV+" reboot series "Amazing Stories" called "Dynoman and the Volt!!" so far has been the best one! As the tale is simple and down to earth and it's themes are sentimental with connection and love and it's all tied into the past. It involves a young boy named Dylan(Tyler Crumley) who lives in Wisconsin and he's odd not popular with little friends and his love is comic books and dressing up like "Batman". Well when old grandpa Joe Harris(the good Robert Forster) visit things change as Joe an old stubborn set in his ways guy who's done with work after slowing down yet he still wants to labor. However when he discovers his grandson's hobby of comics it brings back yesteryear for Joe and the memory of reading the old comic "Dynoman and the Volt!!". Then when a strange mail order ring finally arrives in the mailbox it's like the gift of a super power has been given to Joe! Really this episode is well done with fantasy and imagination, while it deals with family and becoming old all while the escape of a little super power makes the story so fun and touching! Overall near great episode for it's take on special powers, strength, and the little magic that comes from an item of the past, so far best episode of the series.

Better Than the Others

Where "Dynoman" shines is with the performances of the late Robert Forster, and Tyler Crumley. Other then that, it's a pretty standard "superpowers in the real world" story. An 'Amazing Stories' version of 'Brightburn', as it were. The episode effectively mixes in real-world issues like familial neglect and agism, with the superpower stuff. It's a bit chatty, and wife Helen is portrayed unsympathetic (while brother Bryce is pretty much a non-entity), but Kyle Bornheimer gets in some decent acting in his subplot, and Felix Solis makes the best he can of someone who is kind of a heavy and kind of not.

But at least it's "amazing", and the actors appear to be having fun. The lack of either or both in the previous two episodes hasn't helped the show. But like I said in my review of the first episode, it's an anthology. If you don't like an episode, wait a week and you'll get something better. Or worse. At least it'll be different.

But that's just my opinion, I could be wrong. What do you think?

Weak series with even weaker episode...

Warning: Spoilers
Can we get enough of all this stupid superhero kiddy rubbish? Yes we can! The series comes up against all sorts of hackneyed themes from the fantastic genre and spits out results far below mediocrity. Bad, bad cast!

That is what "Amazing Stories" should be!
om-3426 March 2020
After the second episode that is very steeped in modern social justice and tragedy, I was about to give up on "Amazing Stories".

I gave the third episode a try after seeing lot of positive reviews. Boy, was I glad to see it because it reminded me of the original "Amazing Stories" serial in the 1980s and because it fit the original concept.

Nothing about social justice in this episode. Just the regular boy going through the changes in the junior high school, the grandfather having his denial about his age and health, and the parents trying to deal with both opposite forces. Toss the "suspended beliefs" about the superheros in the mix. Add the "sentimentality" and "simplicity" to the mix. Presto! One of the "Amazing Stories."

That kid has relationships problems more than adults, he feeling sad just being ignored by a friend at school, not even beat up by bullies !

The emotions were super exagirated,

And same as you read it in other comments; was this episode written by a child ?

Is this series for adults or for kids? , i wonder,, because it stated great with episode one and two, and now this is just stupid.

With the third episode, they actually get a story that is reminiscent of the original show.

Best episode of season 1
puterdood18 May 2020
This episode is the best one of season 1. It has an "old" feel to it without an outlandish story line that goes nowhere, like a couple of the other episodes. This episode actually has a good story line and a good message. It is not perfect by any means, but of the 5 episodes, this is the best one.

Just a nice story
tonyd6619 May 2020
Go on, take some time out and enjoy this for what it is. For less than an hour it's a relaxing and 'warm' watch with a bit of sci-fi fantasy chucked in (well maybe a lot)... Nice one to farewell Robert Forster. Well done.

This show is about boy and his grandpa. I don't want to spoil you. It just magic ring that give power like superheroes but it more than this. I love how family is and which is important to build relationships. It gets good on the ending. Good job actors two big thumbs
