VIEWS ON FILM review of Envy: Seven Deadly Sins

Warning: Spoilers
"She wants to be you!" Who doesn't want to be a successful businesswoman with a bomb house, a straight arrow husband, and a gift from God daughter.

Anyway in Envy: Seven Deadly Sins, the "envy" is perpetrated by a half-sister named Keisha. Keisha has had it rough growing up and now wants a taste of the good life. "Envy" portrays her as not necessarily crazy but as a person who does bad things and is misunderstood. Lifetime deviates from the normal unhinged path here and I must say, it's kinda refreshing.

So yeah, Envy: Seven Deadly Sins is a Lifetime flick that doesn't adhere to the campy and trashy. It would rather lend a sympathetic ear to the viewer by including an ending that provides resolution and forgiveness. "Envy" is not an LA story but an Atlanta one. The Georgia-based locale doesn't feel like window dressing but more a character in the story. "Hotlanta" becomes well, "sins" city.

Released in April of this year, containing religious undertones, and building its diegesis in one's own good time, Envy: Seven Deadly Sins chronicles downtrodden hairdresser Keisha (played by 26-year-old Serayah). Keisha is bent on finding the father she never knew as well as the half-sister she never thought she had. When she does finally track them down, Keisha enters their lives and tries to destroy their well-off mojo. Keisha doesn't want her victims to bite the dust mind you. She just wants to be them and flavor their upper class happiness.

Sure "Envy" is choppily edited and like most Lifetime pics, the characters are a little wishy-washy in their actions. But hey, Envy: Seven Deadly Sins is more sophisticated than most Lifetime fare. It's a movie with a conscience, devoid of murder and all that over the top, overripe stuff. I "envy" any type of genre entry that tries to change that game. Erred green-eyed monster.

Watchable, but generic and bland...
paul_haakonsen15 November 2021
I sat down to watch the 2021 drama "Seven Deadly Sins: Envy" here in 2021 without ever having heard about the movie. And with it being a Lifetime movie, then I figured that I would probably be in for one their usual pseudo-sappy movies. But still, I opted to watch "Seven Deadly Sins: Envy" as it was a movie that I hadn't already seen.

And while "Seven Deadly Sins: Envy" is watchable, it was indeed an archetypical trademark Lifetime movie, for better or worse. So if you have seen anything from Lifetime before, then you know what you are getting yourself into here when you sit down to watch "Seven Deadly Sins: Envy" from writer Nneka Gerstle and director Damon Lee.

The storyline was adequate, but it was rather bland and generic. And I will say that "Seven Deadly Sins: Envy" didn't really offer anything new, so it felt like this was all something that had been done and seen before in other movies. So writer Nneka Gerstle didn't exactly manage to impress me with this 2021 drama.

The acting performances in the movie were actually fair enough. I will say that the actors and actresses in the movie actually put on good enough performances, given the blandness of the script and storyline.

I am sure that the is an audience out there for a movie such as "Seven Deadly Sins: Envy". I wasn't exactly the target audience, so I wasn't especially impressed with what director Damon Lee delivered. While it was watchable, it is hardly a movie that I will be returning to watch for a second time.

Without spoiling anything, then I have to say that the ending to the movie was just a bit too much of a sappy cliché. But hey, this is a Lifetime movie after all.

My rating of "Seven Deadly Sins: Envy" lands on a five out of ten stars.

COME ON

Warning: Spoilers
I really dislike these like B movies, made on little budget noone watching scenes.

Ok, I'm maybe 10 minutes in & the talking outside salon. Same female walks out twice. There's a man leaning on wall & another man walks up, then disappears. Going to give maybe 5 more minutes & just stop.

I really hate that we have to write like 600 characters. I don't have that much to talk about.

Oh yeah, dad has a big successful business yet the house he stays in & probably neighborhood, come on. The daughter stays in a better place & a two story house, only 1 bedroom? So predictable, from the moment saw Candy pregnant, knew something was happening to baby

Well I started by watching Pride and decided to watch the others. Hopefully the other ones are better. Oh yeah, how she sleeping in car grabs laptop and go online? I can't even believe all the homeless people and noone breaks into her car.

Are you SERIOUS, noone saw Da Beat walk up to her, she whispered in her ear then Da Brat walked over & said he was her baby daddy.

Portrait of a Special Family

Warning: Spoilers
"Envy" is a compelling and moving film that takes the audience on a journey from sabotage to redemption.

At the time of the death of her mother, young Keisha is an embittered soul. She is living out of her car and cannot even afford a proper burial for her mom. With a giant chip on her shoulder, Keisha carefully plots to reunite with the father she never had and to take advantage of the affluence and kindness of her half-sister, Gabrielle.

The drama was a roller-coaster ride of emotions as Keisha worms her way into the life of Gabrielle, her husband Mauricio, and their beautiful daughter Bella. There unfolds a blatant attempt by Keisha to sabotage their lives. In the successful public relations firm run by Gabrielle and her partner Regan, Keisha uses her intelligence to create as much chaos as possible. She also drives a wedge into the successful marriage of Gabrielle and Mauricio.

The heart and soul of the film lies in the devotion of the father of Keisha and Gabrielle. Elijah Wilson believes in the sacredness of family, and his steadfast expression of love slowly rubs off on the conniving Keisha.

There was an especially moving ending to the film where Keisha has undergone a remarkable transformation. There is a new spirit of responsibility within her and a special aura that has infused her with a new life--a life of faith, love, and, above all, family. This was a superb made-for-television drama that was superior in scripting, acting, and directing when compared with most feature films.

I usually don't watch lifetime movies but this was really good! It gets pretty intense at times because the girl gets wilder and wilder. Fitting title great movie.

A Sweet Ending

I must say Envy was much better then Lust. Now Rollins has always been a believable actress in my eyes, and I enjoy anything she plays in. So majority of this movie was on her shoulders. Her costar Serayah was a face I have not seen before, and although there were times I rolled my eyes at her acting.

For the most part, there was never a dull moment with her around. Beautiful and very sassy, she easily fit the roll for Envy. I think she should have played in Lust, tbh. This was a slow burn, but a great finish. Lust felt like it was a bit to preachy, although this movie felt like just the right amount.

I love Lifetime movies and I cannot wait for the 5 other sins to be released. If they are anything like this one I know I will enjoy it. Now, was it a story that has been done before, yes. But the actors made it come alive, I wish I had someone like Mr. Powell in my life!

It was a lesson movie, that made you appreciate the things you have, because you never know when it could all go away. Wish Da Brat had more lines, I love her. I recommend if you already love Lifetime movies.
