The tournament was part of the celebrations commemorating the 150th anniversary of European settlement in Victoria.
All of the then Test match playing teams participated with matches played at the Melbourne Cricket Ground and the Sydney Cricket Ground.
The tournament saw the first matches played under lights at the Melbourne Cricket Ground.
India's Ravi Shastri was awarded Man-of-the-tournament under the title "Champion of Champions" for scoring 3 half centuries and picking 8 wickets. He was also gifted with an Audi car whose tax duties were eased off by then Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi.
The final at Melbourne was the last time Sunil Gavaskar captained India in his 16 year career. He had announced his resignation from captaincy before the tournament began and continued to play as a specialist batsman till his international retirement altogether post India's defeat to England in the semi-finals of the 1987 World Cup.
