Psychologist Hannah drops her daughter Fleur off on the first day of school. While Fleur quickly makes new friends, Hannah has to cope with meddling other parents, a singing school teacher, and rules and regulations she never even heard of.
Hannah tries to arrange a play date for her daughter, but that does not go as planned. Principal Erik hires Ronald, an ex-soldier with PTSD, as the new janitor. Schoolteacher Els is fed up with parents distracting their children in class.
Fleur brings treats to class for her birthday, not realizing that in doing so she violates the school's regulations. Erik calls a parent meeting in order to encourage parent participation.
Erik meets Bobbi, a college student who will do an internship in the school. Hannah's ex-husband brings his new girlfriend to the parent-teacher conference.
Erik decides that celebrating "Sinterklaas" is no longer appropriate in his multi-cultural school, so he introduces "Winterklaas". Hannah gets into a fight with bossy Angelique, who wants her daughter to get the first gift at the party.
The annual Christmas party spirals out of control. Erik gets wasted and doesn't remember a thing the next day. Hannah and Els desperately try to find hamster Chico. Was Chico together with baby Jesus cremated by a drunk Erik?
Els explains the facts about "the birds and the bees" in class. This triggers a fierce discussion among parents, especially between conservative Angelique and free-spirited Karel. Hannah's ex-husband is single again and making a move.
April 1st. Erik pulls some lame pranks on his staff, like he does every year. But this time, the teachers have something prepared that he will not soon forget. Els categorizes the children according to their reading abilities.
Els teaches the children how to cope with bullying, but that seems to have an averse effect on Fleur. Principal Erik has spent too much money over the past year, and is now trying desperately to cut costs on staff.
On the last day of school, Hannah is trying to organize the big school party with little or no help from the other parents. Luckily, Ronald is there to help. When a flex manager audits the school, Erik's position as principal is in danger.
