We all love mysteries because they are always intriguing puzzles that force you to use all your wits and deductive reasoning along with the characters to solve gruesome crimes. However, let's be honest, there are an infinite number of movies and TV shows with similar premise, which makes the mystery genre seem rather unremarkable.
However, when the crime story focuses not so much on the crime itself, but on its consequences, human relationships, the psyche of the criminal, the victim and their loved ones, we get a deep psychological drama. Add quality cinematography and a talented cast to the formula and you have a surefire hit.
Such was the case with Broadchurch, starring David Tennant and Olivia Colman. Yes, you can find criticism of the show here and there, but the vast majority of professional critics and audiences remained positive, and now the show boasts an impressive 92% score on Rotten Tomatoes.

Back in 2013, David Tennant and the not-yet-a-list Olivia Colman broke our brains with the first season of Broadchurch, a series written with a self-contained first season but which proved so popular it lasted for three years.
The outstanding first season of Broadchurch centers around the death of a young boy in a small, seemingly idyllic community. The sudden and horrible death of 11-year-old Danny sends his town in a tailspin. The investigation is run by the cheerful Detective Miller (Colman) and her equally dour partner, the recently transferred Detective Alec Hardy (Tennant).
Part of what made Broadchurch so interesting is that it wasn't just about the 'whodunnit' of it all. The series was not only interested in solving the crime, but also in examining the impact of Danny's death, the resulting media attention, and the investigation on a tight-knit community.
Now, fans of Broadchurch are discovering another David Tennant must-watch crime drama.

Jenna Coleman had “avoided” playing a detective – until she was approached about playing rookie cop Ember Manning in a scenic lake town in Lancashire in North West England in BBC Studios’ The Jetty from creator and writer Cat Jones and Firebird Pictures.
“What appealed to me was that the character of Ember was completely there on page one,” she tells The Hollywood Reporter. “Also, it’s a crime thriller, but it’s wrapped up in such a human, emotive, and poetic piece. It is crafted so it has all of the great things of a crime thriller – turning the page and having all of the beats. But it’s also such a feminine piece that really explores relationships and provokes. It has all sorts of blurred boundaries and is asking a lot of uncomfortable questions without fully answering them.”

Warning: contains major finale spoilers.
In the end, it wasn’t playing any kind of game. Deadwater Fell’s first two episodes presented as a whodunit thriller with all the ingredients required to guess the villain: a small community, an appalling crime, a cast of suspects, emerging clues…
In the drama’s second half, there was no need for guesswork. The mystery trappings had fallen away, leaving behind a raw, emotional drama that told the simplest and saddest of stories – but one with an urgent purpose in its telling.
David Tennant‘s character Tom killed his family. Why? Because he felt that they were his to kill, that his control over them was worth more than their lives. He felt threatened and he felt entitled. And in all of the most important ways, he didn’t feel anything at all.

Britain’s leading lady of the TV action thriller, Keeley Hawes, is back.
The star of “Bodyguard” returns in “Crossfire,” another nail-biting thriller for the BBC in which Hawes plays a holidaymaker whose sunbathing session on her hotel balcony becomes a nightmare when shots ring out across the complex, turning her world upside down.
The scenario will remind audiences of her turn as the U.K. home secretary alongside Richard Madden’s bodyguard in the eponymous BBC drama, which became a global hit when it was picked up by Netflix.
The setting for “Crossfire,” however, is a far cry from London’s Westminster, instead set at a luxury resort in the Canary Islands.
Produced by Fremantle’s Dancing Ledge Productions (“The Salisbury Poisonings”), the drama is the first original series from author Louise Doughty, who previously adapted her novel “Apple Tree Yard” for a hugely popular BBC limited series.

Shetland’s Series 7 return is a bittersweet one for fans of the Scottish BBC crime drama. The six-episode run will be actor Douglas Henshall’s last in the lead role of Di Jimmy Perez. Henshall’s departure though, doesn’t mean the end for Shetland, which has been renewed for an eighth series due to arrive in 2023. A new, as-yet-unannounced, lead actor will be joining the returning cast for that run.
Series 7, which starts on BBC One on Wednesday the 10th of August at 9pm, promises to tie up Perez’s loose ends and follow up on last series’ will-they-won’t-they frisson with Irish carer Meg. Before Perez says his final goodbye to the evidence board though, there’s a missing person case to solve, and a host of new characters to interrogate. Here’s who he’ll be meeting…

The BBC has commissioned a six-part drama about the UK’s ska and two-tone music scene, which hails from Peaky Blinders creator Steven Knight.
Two Tone (working title) will tell the story of an extended family and four young people who are drawn into the world of ska and two tone music, which grew from the grass roots of the English cities Coventry and Birmingham in the late 1970s and early 1980s.
The music united black, white and Asian youths during a tough period for race relations in the UK.
The series also marks the beginning of a new deal between Knight and Banijay-uk backed Kudos, which gives the Deadwater Fell indie a first look at all of his future UK-based projects. The agreement also includes a commitment to grow the local workforce in Birmingham, using Knight’s Digbeth Loc Studios as a base.
Deadline first revealed Knight and Kudos were working on Two-Tone in November 2020.
News of the series, which will air on BBC1 and the BBC iPlayer, comes in the same month Knight’s lauded gangster drama Peaky Blinders came to an end on the BBC.
Kudos and Knight’s Nebulastar are co-producing in association with the former’s northern subsidiary Kudos North, Matthew James Wilkinson’s Stigma Films (Choose Or Die) and Nick Angel, the former Island Records A&r director who was a co-founder of Colin Firth’s Random Films.
Shooting will begin Birmingham at Digbeth Loc later this year.
“This is a project that’s literally very close to home and I’m developing characters and themes that are set in the early 80s but hopefully are very contemporary. Of course, the soundtrack will be sensational,” said Knight, who is creator, writer and executive producer.
Kudos’ Karen Wilson, Martin Haines, Phil Temple and Laura Conway are exec producers, along with Wilkinson, Angel and the BBC’s Tommy Bulfin. Banijay Rights will handle international distribution.
Ben Irving, Acting Director of BBC Drama said: “Steven has taken his knowledge of this time and place and used it to weave a brilliantly original and characterful drama, set against the musical backdrop of ska and two tone. We are thrilled to be able to bring this unique piece to viewers on the BBC.”...

The production designer on Netflix’s Bridgerton prequel Queen Charlotte has been removed from the Shonda Rhimes show due to allegations of bullying behavior on set.
Netflix confirmed to Deadline that David Arrowsmith is no longer working on the show but did not comment on why, after The Sun reported his behavior with colleagues had “crossed the line” and he had been accused of bullying.
Arrowsmith is a veteran production designer, with credits on both sides of the Atlantic for shows such as Whiskey Cavalier, Deadwater Fell and Cold Feet.
Queen Charlotte tells the story of how the young Queen’s marriage to King George sparked both a great love story and a societal shift, creating the Bridgerton world. It will feature the likes of Gold Roshuevel, Adjoin Anode and Ruth Gemmell.
The debate on how to end bullying in the UK business has been boiling for some time now.

ViacomCBS-backed U.K. broadcaster Channel 5 has revealed a trailer for its much anticipated series “Anne Boleyn,” starring “Queen & Slim” actor Jodie Turner-Smith.
The trailer begins with Turner-Smith, as Tudor queen Anne Boleyn, pleading not guilty to charges of treason. It proceeds to rack up the emotional tension with a childbirth sequence and then asks a series of questions — ‘Dishonest or Devoted?’; ‘Traitor or Trailblazer?’; and ‘Sinner or Saint?’ after which the queen declares: “The world will know my innocence.”

The three-part psychological thriller follows Boleyn, the most notorious of Henry VIII’s wives, best known for her untimely demise by execution.
Produced by Fable Pictures and Sony Pictures Television, “Anne Boleyn” garnered headlines last year for Turner-Smith’s casting, which marks one of a handful of times a Black actor has portrayed a major royal figure on a British terrestrial broadcaster.

ITV must be feeling confident about the nation’s emotional resilience. While other channels are scheduling there-there comfort shows to hug us through These Unprecedented Times, ITV brings us the true crime tale of serial killer Dennis Nilsen.
From Monday to Wednesday, ITV’s bedtime story will be about decomposing corpses, boiled human heads and a psyche so unsettling it’ll undermine any faith you had in the kindness of strangers. This is anti-comfort TV, a visit to the psycho zoo where the price of admission gets you a long, hard look into the eyes of a personality gone terribly, terribly wrong. Then on Thursday, it’s topped off with a one-hour documentary featuring real interview footage of Nilsen, so viewers can contrast and compare the drama with the real thing.
Do that, and you’ll see how miraculous is the casting of David Tennant as the lead.

U.S. broadcast networks are acquiring and planning to acquire international series on a scale not seen since the 2007/08 Writers’ Strike.
The Covid-19 global pandemic has provided a boon for global distributors, many of which have long struggled to sell content to the likes of ABC, CBS, Fox, NBC and The CW.
This week, we have seen The CW pick up British comedy series Dead Pixels, produced by Succession creator Jesse Armstrong’s production company Various Artists, and Canadian procedural The Coroner and NBC has bought Canadian medical drama Transplant.
Deadline has spoken to a number of international sales execs, who are seeing unprecedented demand for English-language shows that could help plug gaps caused by the production shutdown. We have also highlighted a number of titles, finished and in the can, that may travel to the States.

Deadwater Fell is the new British crime show making waves. Here’s why you should be watching.
“The British do so many things well: cucumber sandwiches, fancy hats, sketch comedy. But perhaps their strongest export to date is their seemingly inexhaustible supply of murder mystery dramas. From Broadchurch to Grantchester to Sherlock to Luther, the Brits have a knack for gripping whodunits jam-packed with excellent actors and dreary scenery.”

America needs to have a plan for how to transition out of the coronavirus quarantine.
“Most of the world outside the United States has reached the end of the beginning of the novel coronavirus pandemic. New confirmed infections and deaths have plateaued and are beginning to fall in some of the hardest-hit countries like Italy and Spain, and Germany is beginning to draw up plans for re-starting its economy.”

All3Media has dropped out of the running to buy rival production and distribution giant Endemol Shine, Variety has learned.
All3Media, jointly owned by Discovery and Liberty Global, had lately been running the numbers to see if the acquisition made sense. Liberty is building up a huge war chest, having gained approval to offload a raft of cable assets in Europe to Vodafone for $21.5 billion.
But the price tag that Endemol Shine’s owners, Disney and Apollo, have put on the business appears to remain a stumbling block for potential suitors, sources told Variety. Endemol Shine is said to still be looking for $2 billion, while the latest overture from All3Media was below that threshold.
Endemol Shine and All3Media both declined to comment.

David Tennant and Cush Jumbo will lead the cast of “Deadwater Fell” (working title), the upcoming Channel 4 drama following two families in the aftermath of a tragedy that claims the lives of a woman and her three children.
Hailing from Daisy Coulam, the writer of “Grantchester,” and Endemol Shine’s Kudos, the producer of that show and “Humans,” it will be filmed and set in Scotland.

The Good Fight’s Cush Jumbo and Good Omens’ David Tennant are to star in Channel 4 crime drama Deadwater Fell (w/t).
The pair are leading the cast of the Kudos-produced four-part series alongside Patrick Melrose and The Crown star Anna Madeley and The Terror’s Matthew McNulty.
The series is as much of an exploration of the anatomy of a terrible crime as it is a forensic dissection of two relationships. Tennant, who starred in Kudos’ Broadchurch, stars as admired local doctor Tom Kendrick, while Madeley plays his loving wife Kate, a primary school teacher. Kate works with her best friend Jess Milner, played by Jumbo, who used to be a bit of an outsider. But when she met Steve, played by McNulty, six years ago, she quickly moved to the small, Scottish community of Kirkdarroch and made a home with him. She helps him look after his...
