For the first time in its seven-season history on two networks, Tim Allen’s sitcom Last Man Standing will not be on the fall schedule.
Despite the comedy’s strong ratings performance in its first season on Fox, it has been held for later in the season. Last Man Standing had to leave its long-time Friday home as WWE’s SmackDown Live takes over the night in the fall, and was not assigned another slot on the Fox fall schedule, which will feature no live-acting comedies for the first time in years.
“We set some comedy goals, one of which was ramping up our animation lineup; that was our No. 1 comedy target,” Fox Entertainment President Michael Thorn said during Fox’s upfront call Monday morning. He noted the three new animated series ordered for next season, including Bless the Harts, which got the post-Simpsons slot on the fall schedule.

The new-model Fox network is loading up on 10 new scripted series for the 2019-20 season, most of which will be held for midseason as the network adjusts to its heightened focus on live sports.
Fox’s volume of new scripted series has doubled from the 2018-19 season, a clear statement from the network that it aims to remain a player in traditional primetime comedies and drama. But as promised, the network’s fall and winter lineup is also heavy on live sports, from “Thursday Night Football” to the WWE’s “Smackdown Live” taking over Fridays.
“We wanted to let the creative community know that Fox is not only open for business but we feel like we’re stronger than ever,” said Fox Entertainment CEO Charlie Collier in outlining the 2019-20 schedule to reporters. Fox is set to formally present its new primetime lineup to advertisers today at New York’s Beacon Theater at 4 p.

Fox has ordered one more pilot to series, the Kim Cattrall-led southern Gothic dramedy “Filthy Rich.”
Written and directed by “The Help” filmmaker Tate Taylor, the show is a family drama in “which wealth, power and religion collide – with outrageously soapy results.”
Here’s the logline for “Filthy Rich”: When the patriarch of a mega-rich Southern family, famed for creating a wildly successful Christian television network, dies in a plane crash, his wife and family are stunned to learn that he fathered three illegitimate children, all of whom are written into his will, threatening their family name and fortune. With monumental twists and turns, “Filthy Rich” presents a world in which everyone has an ulterior motive – and no one is going down without a fight.
“Filthy Rich” stars Cattrall as Margaret Monreaux, Gerald McRaney as Eugene Monreaux, Aubrey Dollar as Rose Monreaux, Corey Cott as Eric Monreaux, Benjamin Aguilar as Antonio Rivera,...

“Star” has been canceled after three seasons at Fox.
The musical drama from Lee Daniels and Tom Donaghy told the story of three girls’ rise to fame. It starred Jude Demorest, Ryan Destiny, Brittany O’Grady, Queen Latifah, Quincy Brown and Amiyah Scott.
Daniels, Pamela Oas Williams and Karin Gist were executive producers; Gist was also the showrunner. The series was a production of 20th Century Fox Television in association with Lee Daniels Entertainment.
The show was one of two Daniels had at Fox, the other being “Empire.” “Empire” was recently renewed for a sixth season despite the controversy surrounding series star Jussie Smollett. Smollet’s contract with the show has been extended but there are currently no plans for him to return for the show’s new season.
Earlier today, Fox also canceled freshman drama “The Passage” and comedy “The Cool Kids,” while “Lethal Weapon” was also canceled after three seasons.

Vampire drama “The Passage” starred Mark-Paul Gosselaar, comedy “The Cool Kids” was co-created by Charlie Day and starred David Alan Grier, Martin Mull, Leslie Jordan and Vicki Lawrence.
Those two cuts follow cancellations for “The Gifted” and “Rel.” “Gotham” has also come to a conclusion, though that one was planned ahead of time.

It seems like The Cool Kids are no longer cool enough for Fox. The network canceled the comedy starring David Alan Grier, Martin Mull, Vicki Lawrence, and Leslie Jordan after one season.
The Cool Kids premiered last fall to solid numbers. Its September debut (2.1 18-49 L+7 rating 10.2 million) was the most-watched Friday broadcast comedy debut in almost six years. The comedy also held onto a significant part of its Last Man Standing lead-in early on.
Last October, Fox picked up the multi-cam series for nine additional episodes for a full-season order to 22 episodes. Since then, The Cool Kids has been fading, more recently pulling in a 0.6 demo rating in Live+same day and just over 3 million viewers.
Fox already picked up a new multi-camera comedy series to pair up with Last Man Standing, Outmatched, And speaking of Lms, it will live up to its name as the only current live-action...

Fox today made the bulk of its new series pickups, ordering four dramas — Prodigal Son, starring Tom Payne and Michael Sheen; neXt, starring John Slattery police drama Deputy, headlined by Stephen Dorff; the Annie Weisman/Jason Katims sister drama; based on an Australian format — and comedy Outmatched (fka Geniuses).
That leaves two more drama pilots and three comedy ones. While I hear Fox is yet to give official passes, most of the remaining pilots are not going forward at the network.
In best shape is soapy family drama Filthy Rich, headlined by Kim Cattrall, which is considered a lock as a possible companion to Empire, with details currently being worked out. I hear they have to do with writer/director/exec producer’s Tate Taylor availability as his film schedule may not allow for the series to be ready for fall. Fox just made its first new series pickups, ordering four of its six drama pilots to series. That includes cop/serial killer drama Prodigal Son, starring Tom Payne and Michael Sheen; John Slattery’s AI drama neXt; police drama Deputy, headlined by Stephen Dorff; and the Annie Weisman/Jason Katims sister drama; based on an Australian format.
The drama competition at Fox had been fierce virtually from the start with five of the six pilots emerging as solid contenders. The fifth in the group — soapy family drama Filthy Rich, headlined by Kim Cattrall, which is considered a suitable companion to Empire — remains in contention with deals being worked out.
The mass pickup of new drama series at Fox, which only ordered two new hourlong shows last year, is not good news for the network’s bubble dramas, Lethal Weapon, The Passage and Star.
Fox Orders Live-Action Comedy Series ‘Outmatched’ and Animated ‘The Great North’
I hear Fox’s sixth drama pilot, Tom Kapinos’ Lovestruck, is not going forward at the network. But the show, whose first season takes place over the course of single night at a wedding, reportedly had tested well and has been well received within 20th Century Fox TV, which is expected to shop it elsewhere, similarly to its 2018 Fox pilot Mixtape, which was picked up to series by Netflix.
Of the newly picked-up Fox dramas, one, neXt (plus Filthy Rich), comes from Fox’s former corporate sibling 20th Century Fox TV. The others come from other studios, Warner Bros. TV (Prodigal Son), Universal TV (Weisman/Katims) and eOne (Deputy), underlining the now-independent network’s commitment to work with all suppliers. All are co-productions with Fox Entertainment. The Fox drama lineup also includes top acting talent with Sheen, Slattery and Dorff.
The pickup of Prodigal Son makes it 3-for-3 for Berlanti Prods., with all three of the company’s broadcast pilots this season going to series, including the CW’s Batwoman and Katy Keene.
Prodigal Son passed one of the biggest tests for a pilot – recasting its lead, with Payne replacing originally cast Finn Jones after the pilot read. Payne and Sheen, who plays his father, proved a formidable duo, drawing praise for their acting — especially Sheen who has a showcase role as a notorious serial killer.
2019 Fox Pilots and Series Orders
Police drama Deputy has been praised for Dorff’s acting and the directing work of Bright helmer David Ayer. eOne secured Dorff in what might be the biggest talent deal so far this broadcast pilot season. Dorff will reportedly be paid north of $200,000 an episode. If the show goes to a second season, Dorff would become an executive producer. In conjunction with his casting in Deputy, Dorff made a feature script development deal with eOne to develop and star in a movie, which would be produced by Ayer and Chris Long’s Cedar Park Entertainment.
The four dramas join two comedies picked up to series today by Fox, Outmatched (fka Geniuses) and animated half-hour The Great North. and previously ordered straight-to-series animated comedies Bless the Harts and Duncanville.

The New Fox is ramping up for the 2019-2020 season with six new series pick ups.
The broadcaster handed out orders for four dramas — “Deputy,” “Prodigal Son,” “neXt,” and the untitled Annie Weisman/Jason Katims project — as well as two comedies. One of the comedies is the animated series “The Great North” and the second is the multi-cam “Outmatched,” formerly known as “Geniuses.” These orders join the previously announced straight-to-series orders for the animated comedies “Duncanville” and “Bless the Harts” at Fox.
Each of the newly announced pick ups is a co-production with Fox Entertainment (formerly Fox Broadcasting). The move will allow Fox to maintain a stake in the shows despite not having a vertically-integrated studio like they did before the 21st Century Fox-Disney merger that saw 20th Century Fox Television move under the Disney umbrella. Both “Duncanville” and “Bless the Harts” are co-productions as well. “Duncanville” is produced by Universal Television,...

With the network screenings wrapping up, we are heading into the final stage of pilot season when network executives take the pilots that had screened the best/tested the highest and see which of them fit into their schedules for next season. With ABC’s order Thursday of Black-ish‘s young Rainbow-centered prequel Mixed-ish kicking off the new series pickups, here is our final pilot buzz list.
The field of leading ABC drama contenders has narrowed down a bit. Staying strong after the screenings are early standouts Pi drama Stumptown starring Cobie Smulders, the soapy, John Mayer song-inspired Heart of Life, the new NYPD Blue and the untitled Hank Steinberg /50 Cent legal drama. It’s late April. Normally at this time TV business’ attention is focused almost squarely on the broadcast pilot season as it is heading into its final stages — network pilot screenings followed by new series pickups. But this is not a normal time. With the WGA-Ata standoff completely dominating the Hollywood conversation following the mass firing of agents by writers, it has been hard for anyone to focus on pilot season. Here is what I hear is hot at the networks. Keep in mind that the information is still incomplete as not all pilots have been delivered to the networks. We will have a fuller picture at the end of next week when most of the pilots will have screened.

It’s April, and Deadline is launching its annual Pilot Panic feature where we track buzz on the broadcast pilots as they go through production and and testing. We are late out of the gate this year, but that’s understandable — it’s been an extraordinary time of upheaval in the business, with 13,000 writers on Friday told by the WGA to fire their agents after the guild and the Ata could not reach a new franchise agreement.
The 2019 broadcast pilot season has been completely overshadowed by the WGA-ata battle. Still, handicapping broadcast pilots is a Deadline tradition, so let’s get to it. As usual, the first story is very sketchy and preliminary as many pilots are still in production and very few have been delivered. Here is a list of some pilots that are getting strong early buzz based on a combination of auspices, script, table read, taping or dailies.
