Beautiful
5 January 2007
I have seen thousands of movies and I have never used this word to describe one. Frank Griebe-the cinematographer-has shot one of the most breathtaking films I have ever seen. The colors just pop out at you, especially on the lilac field and the face of Rachel Hurd-Wood. Not to mention the nude bodies that are prevalent throughout the film. If you appreciate the art of cinematography you owe it to yourself to see this film. As far as the story goes, it is very twisted-but funny-and sticks closely-perhaps too closely-to the style of the book. And it takes a certain state of mind to enjoy it; that is, you have to allow yourself to be caught up in the flow of the story and not take things literally. The combination of broad comedy and harsh reality can be jarring, and some of its elements can be offensive, but if you suspend your sense of morality and go along with it you will have a fun ride.

Satan's Blade (1984)

No Appreciation of Greatness!
28 December 2006
Warning: Spoilers
I am flabbergasted that so many people can not appreciate classic cinema when they see it! I have seen thousands of horror movies and this is one of my all time favors! Granted the budget is non-existent and the acting at times is not award worthy...but that's what makes this such a non-stop hoot! In this golden era of horror flicks there was a deluge of let's-get-together-and-make-a-movie movies to fill up all the video stores that were opening up. Of all these, "Satan's Blade" was the tops. ****SPOILERS****

From the babes-only bank robbery to the cheesily convoluted plot it was a pleasure. At least they attempted a plot line...a very small one, but it was there. And the busty beauties-snuffed topless of course-all with the haunted knife comes back at the end "twist" it was just a fun film that should be on DVD!

There seems to be some folks who made this here-contact Anchor Bay or Troma or Something Weird!!! Get together for a commentary and let the rest of the world in on this classic!

Get this out on DVD
28 December 2006
Hey, Straw, if you read this-get this out on DVD. I love this movie! It is funny and twisted and Necrocomedies are sorely in short supply in this sad world. I have been a big fan since it first appeared in video stores almost 20 years ago. I was casually glancing through the New Releases-not expecting much-when my unbelieving eyes saw this movie. I could not believe it-finally some brave auteur made a heart warming romantic comedy starring a necrophiliac. I salute you. I own a VHS copy of this, but I want a DVD to add to my collection. Have you tried?

You all deserve to treat yourself to the joy that is "Dead Mate". You will thank me!

Sleazarrific!
27 February 2004
Warning: Spoilers
This is a classic example of nudie cinema with a rather sleazy but fun plot. The great Tempest Storm stars as a stripper who's coworkers are being knocked off. A pair of goofy detectives try and catch the killer. None of this is important, nor is the fact that the va va voom voluptuous Ms. Storm has a very distinct line reading style, but instead that everyone is having a ball.

POSSIBLE SPOILER

One of the truly great moments of filmdom comes when a photographer comes to take a photo of one of the victims. After taking a shot the police officer (!) flips the dead girls clothes off so the photographer can get a cheesecake shot to sell to some sleazy tabloid. They don't make films like that any more & I for one miss them!

superb intelligent thriller
24 July 2003
this is one of the most underappreciated films of all times. it is a superbly acted and directed film with a very intelligent and well crafted screenplay. the "twist" is revealed just at the right moment and is not played for any exploitative reason but still resonates throughout the course of the film. i have the video of this film, which is not listed anywhere and just got the poster, that is how much i love this film. if you are looking for a stupid bang bang movie don't bother, if you're looking for a goofy feel good movie, go elsewhere, but if you appreciate well-crafted film making this is your movie.

quirky little thriller
10 March 2003
i have always enjoyed this little movie since i first rented it over a decade ago. it is not just standard d.t.v. dreck, it has a few things to recommend it. there are two fine performances by martin landau and jerry van dyke, they do not just phone it in, especially not landau. the twist about how it may be possible for the young woman to be picking up the murder feeds is interesting. and the murders themselves are sufficiently sleazy to satisfy. the director is a woman who produced "song of norway" one of the greatest bad musicals of all time, and she keeps things hopping along. rent the tape, grab some munchies, and it will be a fun hour and a half if you look at it as the quirky little flick that it is.

unredeemable excrement
31 July 2002
words can not convey my revulsion upon reading any review of this atrocity that is anything but completely negative. much is made of the singing credits and granted that is cute and it was nice that they acknowledged everyone. but that can NOT even come within light-years of excusing what went on before. it is repulsive, and totally lacking in wit or camp value and a waste of normally sane and talented people. this is quite simply horrible.

well worth checking out!
5 July 2002
as an avid movie watcher i often rent dvds or tapes i never heard of. usually crappy films that deserve their fate. but occasionally i come across a gem. this is one such movie. points definitely go for originality and quirkiness, it is a rather unique script with some genuine and off-the-wall twists that actually are twisted. i won't give anything away-just see it and stick with it all the way. it is not a perfect film, but it is heads and shoulders above the crap this country spews out.

truly decades ahead of its time

alfred hitchcock is rightfully renowned as one of the masters of movie making. he has directed some of the greatest films ever made, and this is one of the greatest films he ever made...so how can it still be so underrated and underappreciated??????? and yet it is! this is without question a film that shows a master at his best-and produced the first true modern movie-in its fast paced action, nonchalant 'hero', sex and violence, astonishing twists and turns, this film has everything-and had it thirty or more years before anyone else! i suggest any film lover that did not give this a '10'-see it again! i just saw a dvd of it and even after seeing it dozens of times, i still get a kick out it! there is not one wasted second in this film, and the actors from top to bottom are flawless, with donat giving one of the great performances of all time-full of humor and quick thinking, a man who is setting out to save the world, and yet is not a typical 'hero'-every nuance is wonderfully underplayed-and long before anyone else. what are the 39 steps? a classic!!!!!!!

most underrated movie of the 90's
19 January 2002
with all the absolute crap that gets produced by this country, it really burns me up when a truly unique and well made movie gets not only overlooked, but completely disregarded. this is a great movie-pure and simple. i just rented the dvd and loved it! the acting is superb-not a subpar one in the bunch-with the whole cast giving the performances of their careers. and the writing is so far superior to most films that it boggles the mind-it is funny and creepy and flows together so wonderfully-with some really shocking moments that i promise will blow you away! the only slight problem i might have is the ending-but then again the ability to end a film is one that every american movie seems to have lately, so some small allowances can be made because everything that goes on from the first scene to the penultimate one more than makes up for it. it is really a shame that most people will never have the joy of seeing this in the theatre like i did, but it plays very well on the small screen as well, on tape or dvd. see it, you will thank me!

this is a really fun flick-very funny and sexy and chockablock with busty babes and bad gags. good old fashioned sleazy entertainment! the kind of goofy nudie that cormans cohorts used to make all the time-shameless swiping of other flicks and making sure nekkidness is the norm. including the last time traci lords was nude in a film! also check out ava and becky's cameos. a must see for all pc hating heteros!

classic b entertainment!
17 December 2001
this is one of my all time favorite movies! in the days before the pc police turned the movie industry into a feminist wasteland there were people with little money who would cull the film archives and throw in a little t & a and with shame thrown to the wind release movies that were just plain goofy fun-with a little sex in it-this was the masterpiece of that style of filmmaking-it's fun to see over and over to test your b movie knowledge as you guess what flick was used in what scene. the great part is that some of the original parts of this film were used in later films like the remake of 'not of this earth'. find this and enjoy!

not a typical 'b' flick
30 November 2001
Warning: Spoilers
considering the title(s) and the releasing company-this is a very sincere and definitely non-exploitative film. the quality of the acting is quite good for its low budget roots, and the points it tries to get across are above those roots. it is a very sad movie, no great revelations occur and there is no gladness at the end when the killer is put in the institution. and the theme song is one of my favorites. this is worth your while to see for what can be done with local talent and a low budget.

shockingly good disney tv flick
11 November 2001
i stumbled upon this surfing through the channels-i only stopped because i think katherine heigl is gorgeous! i was not prepared for much-considering the fact that this is a tv mivie by disney, and a body switching plot did not add much to my expectations. imagine my shock that this is a delightful movie and ms heigl has risen way up on my list of talented young actresses. not to miss out on ms harris, who i was not familiar with but is also quite good. a little (but very little) of disney predictability and a very minimum of cliches made me give this a '9' instead of '10'-but i say without hesitation-see this movie! you will be glad very entertained and very happy you gave it a shot!

stunning work of art

this is simply one of the greatest horror films of all time. opening up with maurice jarre's deceptively bouncy yet eerie opening theme to the mysterious little car driving down the highway with its two equally mysterious occupents it leads us on a wonderfully cinematographed and directed story that is alternately beautifully creepy and creepilly beautiful. it was groundbreaking for its time and still holds up today. a masterpiece!

true classic!

words can not describe the sheer genius of this classic piece of bad cinema. it is no wonder that directors love to kill kim novak-in this case (as in vertigo) not once but twice!-she certainly murders the thespian art. it just goes to show that it takes a group of extremely talented people to make a truly cinematic camp masterpiece-it was a joy from start to finish. and what an ending!! surrealistic and sublime!! you must catch this and relish it-i promise you will love every minute of it :)

please, forget all the crapola from those wet blankets who can not see this as the masterpiece it is. this film has given more enjoyment to anyone who has seen it than 90% of the academy award winners combined. sure the creatures are ridiculous-and the acting subamateur-but face facts-it is a very well made film. really!! look at it purely from a technical point of view-the editing, the direction, the use of different camera shots and angles, all of which are quite excellent. what they are showing is also a true pleasure of grade z films, but it is a film you can watch again & again and love it every time-and it contains one of my favorite lines in film history-just after we see a quick cut montage of men with radiation detectors checking any body of water from babbling brooks to puddles the great doctor comes home dejected and asks his maid where his daughter is-she says Fingles Quarry-and then he jumps up and screams, "Fingles Quarry! That's the deepest body of water around here and near where those three girls were killed!" You think?! brilliant, just brilliant :)

still the greatest
1 March 2001
i have seen this classic more often than any other film in my life. i ran the college film program and this was the number one most popular film shown. i saw this movie 7 times in the course of three days and loved every minute of it. i have seen about every horror/slasher film ever made and this is still #1. margot kidder gives a brilliant performance as barb-from the moment she tells her mom that she's a gold plated whore after being dumped at xmas she takes the film by the balls and runs away with it. and the phone calls...what can i say, if you watch it again and really listen to what seems like raving lunacy the first time, the calls actually tell the back story of the killer and perhaps why he came to that house to kill. and its thrillingly directed, and the ending will chill your bones. and john carpenter and everyone else ripped this film off and it should be watched again and again and release it on dvd damn it!!!!!!!

The Creeping Terror (1964 TV Movie)
10/10
the funniest movie i ever saw!
1 March 2001
you people are nuts-this is a solid 10 for pure entertainment value. and i can say this even though this movie almost killed me! when i first saw this movie at my college dorm i was laughing so hard that i actually fell off the couch gasping for air! and i was not alone. usually the jocks would come in and try to change the channel but not this time! people would walk in to by a soda or snack and ended up sittting down to watch. soon the tv room was packed-standing room only! and this was on a sunny saturday afternoon-and everyone was hollering in laughter. never before or since did this happen, and when i ran this with 'plan nine' in a so-bad-its-great double feature-creeping terror won hands down as the king of bad cinema.

so, forget these idiots. if you ever get a chance to see this do it! i only wish it were rereleased-especially on dvd!

Brilliant short highlight of defunct Miami attraction
15 August 2000
I caught Planet Ocean just after it received an oscar nomination for Best short subject in 1975 at the only venue it ever screened- the NOAA operated PLANET OCEAN attraction across the street from the Miami Seaquarium on Key Biscayne in Florida. The attraction itself was a woefully under-advertised look at ecology and the wonders of the natural world with an emphasis on weather. A recreated hurricane -ALVIN- a deep sea diving machine and an actual piece of glacier were most memorable. This short but breathtaking film on the fragile nature of our planet was a perfect intro to the exhibit. RIP Planet Ocean... you are MISSED!!!!!!

Veteran Styne's Best Score and a timeless CLASSIC??!!!!
8 August 2000
This stunning 1962 achievement is an absolute masterpiece and a prime example of what quality television was once possible. Jule Styne's score ( and he wrote 70 Broadway musicals during his lifetime) achieved an unforgettable blend of Barbara Chain's "freely adapted" Dickens classic into a perfect 52-minute holiday entertainment. The sparse animation remains stunningly cinematic and the moving "performances" of one of the greatest voice-over casts of ALL-TIME (Frees, Foray, Backus,Cassidy) is as effective today as when it premiere in the innocence of Christmastime 1962. A joyous example of economy of script married to intelligent direction... if viewers were surprised by the quality of a film called "Snow White meets the Three Stooges" one can imagine the serendipitous joy of happening upon a Mr. Magoo special of such merit. (It should be remembered that the Magoo Adventures weekly series on NBC in 1964-1965 were a superb Peabody award winning half-hour truncations of children's classic novels.)

Beautiful Tiompkin score and intelligent scripting win out
20 February 2000
This much maligned Bronston epic, known perhaps more for its production disasters than its actual on-screen merits, has, after nearly 40 years, finally blossomed into a respectable epic of the early 60's- less logy than Bronston's EL CID (1961) and less misguided than his FALL OF THE ROMAN EMPIRE (1964) and perhaps his best elephantine production of all. A pungent script by Philip Yordan reportedly written and the film was shot creates a powerful ambiance of the politics of 1900 china and the intricate background of the then world power's conspiring to undermine each other for the sake of nationalism and the humility of confronting man-power over brain-power. An undeserved footnote in film- and a near-classic has the Ava Gardner romance sub-plot been excised entirely- 55 Days at Peking rates a 9.

Nice spare Goldsmith score-solid Douglas and LITTLE ELSE!
20 February 2000
Although Kirk Douglas considers this his favorite film- and for 30 minutes he's correct in that it IS among his best- a boring and overly symbolic and farcical old vs. new and establishment vs. maverick theme gets pounded mercilessly into the ground. A dandy 45-minute short this would have been! The inevitable end is melancholy and Gena Rowlands gets the usual early sixties cameo as his girlfriend (and when isn't she great?) but this is one cult film that scores points for its relative off-beatness and not for its phony lack of commercial resistance.

This is one of the great short films of all time!!! I thrilled to it with members of the USSR pavilion as a visiting US journalist and its obvious yet delightful symbols of colorus representing the world powers was simplistic-undeniably- and brilliantly presented- absolutely. A gorgeous score, handsome cast and stunning production collided in one of the great world's fair cinematic experiences of all time.
