The Aristocrats (2005)
Vile? yes. Offensive? Yes. Disgusting? Yes. Funniest movie of the year? YES!
One of the funniest movies I've seen in a long time. If you're not familiar with the joke, that's fine. If you are, you'll probably enjoy this movie on an entirely different level (which may or may not be better).
Whatever the case may be, be prepared to laugh to the point of crying and in some cases, sides aching.
Now, be forewarned... this movie is not rated, and is about the most disgusting joke ever told. If you're a prude, you'll probably walk out like the stuck up couple who left the theater about 10 minutes into the screening I was at tonight.
There are some howling moments, there are some painfully unfunny moments, but overall, I can't recall laughing this much in a theater since seeing There's Something About Mary.
This is an exercise in 1st Amendment rights (this movie would have been shut down in the days of Lenny Bruce).
If you think 97 minutes of various comedians doing their versions of the same joke won't work, you're in for a surprise. This movie has so much more than that... It shows a real affection for comedy and comic performers.
I have to see it again, there were so many jokes I missed, either because of other people laughing or because I was laughing to hard to hear.
If you love stand-up comedy (or just enjoy laughing) and aren't easily offended, you must see this movie. You'll laugh your ass off.
DC 9/11: Time of Crisis (2003)
the Leni Riefenstahl school of cinema...
What a worthless piece of crap.
This film is fundamentally and fatally flawed - it's relentlessly and shamelessly one-sided.
The picture left out numerous historical facts, and embellished and fabricated others, trying to make President Bush look like a hero (you know, in that silly cowboy kind of way).
It is poorly written, with clichéd dialogue and strained situations, spewing right wing spin and propaganda all over every scene. Even "scenes" we saw live on television on September 11th, 2001.
This self proclaimed patriot - writer/producer Lionel Chetwynd - shot this project in Canada, taking jobs away from American film makers. Now that's true patriotism, isn't it? On the other hand, I guess those film makers can take solace in the fact that they don't have to see their names on this mongrel of a movie.
Personally, I think the producers should be ashamed of themselves. Not just for distorting facts this way, but also for shamelessly taking advantage of a national tragedy for their own personal gain.
However, they have every right to express their views, just as I have the right to say they're dead wrong.
They are not, however, entitled to my money. Showtime just lost my subscription.
Spy Kids 3: Game Over (2003)
Good for kids, parent's won't be too bored...
As a kids movie, it's a lot of fun. As a movie for adults, I've seen far worse. But this wasn't made for adults. It doesn't take itself too seriously which I guess is pretty important in a movie that mostly takes place inside a virtual reality video game. I enjoyed the aloofness, and hidden somewhere deep inside that movie is a message kids need to hear.
Oh, and just seeing Salma Hayek in 3D is worth the price of admission...
As a kids movie, I give it 7 out or 10. As a movie for adults, it's about a 4 out of 10. But this movie wasn't made with adults in mind, so my grade of 7 is the one I'm sticking with.
