Happy, Texas (1999)
Bill Macy is wonderful
I tell you if Bill Macy was gay Id be in line to go out with him <G>..His role as the gay sheriff coming out was touching and heartbreaking ..He has the most beautiful eyes on a man ive seen in years . Steve Zahn is hilarious but Jeremy Northam is somewhat subdued and plays his part as if all he cares about is getting the scene over with . Ms Douglas is ok as the goofy schoolteacher but Ms Walker is surprisingly dull as the bank president. Her decision to switch from tv to movies may take her some time .Zahn and Macy steal every scene they're in and really make the movie more enjoyable . So what if it wasn't filmed in the actual Happy Texas due to budget,if it would've had more backers they could've probably been able to shoot on location . It was a wonderful movie and deserves to be in wide release and supported more .Go see it if you get the chance as it is in limited release and will be out of theaters before you know it .One of the most underrated movies of the year ..and a word to the wise ..high box office receipts don't always mean that the movie is any good. For Example,Look at the Blair Witch project , i still cant believe how much money it has made cashing in on a fad ..shame that people are wasting their money on such trash..
An Ideal Husband (1999)
disappointing
I was looking forward to Rupert Everett's performance. He has the looks as does Ms Driver. However that's all it is. All for show and beautiful costumes and scenery. I didn't know whether this was suppossed to be a romantic comedy or just another episode of masterpiece theater . All the fancy talk of late 19th century English accents delivered with dull results.
Halfway through this film it got even worse as the copy of the film developed a green line running right down the center. This just added to my boredom. Mr Everett and Ms Driver would do better to stick to roles better suited for them. They look pretty in this movie but their lines are boring. Go see My Best Friends Wedding and Good Will Hunting..they showcase Mr Everett and Ms Driver's talents a lot better...
Return to Boggy Creek (1977)
good for kids
i saw this movie when i was 13 and i really liked dana plato who later starred in different strokes as kimberly drummond . i don't think it's garbage .it was not meant to be a sequel to the documentary either . its just a cute kids movie about 3 children who go after men trying to find the boggy creek monster . the men get hurt and the kids rescue them with the help of the creature .haunting shots of the arkansas swamp and scenery were neat . this is a good movie for kids ,no real violence a few mild scares but good fun for the young kids.
The Avengers (1998)
ONE WORD "DISAPPOINTING"
I was too young to watch the original series when it first aired in 1965 the same year I was born but I did see it when it was aired in syndication a few years later as a small child. I loved it with Mrs Peel kicking butt and John Steeds' witty banter with her and don't forget the cane . Diana Rigg and Patrick Macnee were awesome and even though Uma Thurman and Ralph Fiennes look handsome as Peel and Steed that's where the comparison ends. No chemistry or mystery and no action .Uma never gets to kick butt until near the end in the rope scene and even that scene was corny.Fiennes performance is stiff and boring and poor Sean Connery ,my all time favorite actor, was wasted in a silly role as a bondish villain .I mean that scene with the teddy bears belongs in the trash. I don't understand the people who gave this movie more favorable reviews, notice that they all mention Austin Powers as a good movie ,that movie was silly and idiotic and even worse than this movie .
Back to the Future Part III (1990)
Cool movie
Say what you want but I think that this movie was better than number 2 and held its own against "Back to the Future". I liked the old west theme and the fantastic train time machine at the end ..a wonderful way to wrap up the trilogy...bravo Michael J Fox and Christopher Lloyd for giving us a wonderful memory in film magic.
The Hobbit (1977)
OK for its time
"The Hobbit" was OK animation for its time considering that Rankin/Bass did the work, still - low grade animation. Bakshi's use of animation over live actors is still fascinating in "Lord of the Rings". I wish that Bakshi would have made the sequel to it . Instead, Rankin/Bass made "The Return of the King" using the same animation from "The Hobbit", which was OK pre-"Lord of the Rings", but awful after. Why use the same tired old animation when it didn't work that well before? Rankin/Bass should have stuck to Christmas specials for kiddies instead of trying to do Tolkien's movies.
Jaws (1975)
Riveting movie
What can I say, Robert Shaw is riveting in the Indianapolis scene where he recants the tale of his WWII shark horrors. If you get the special edition laser disc or VHS it has bloopers including the scene where the fake blood goes all over his face and you can hear the movie crew laughing in the background. It also has the lost scenes not included in the theatrical release but used on TV as filler. Also a horribly acted scene which was never used between Quint and the old fisherman who works with him. I don't know who played the old fisherman but man was he awful, couldn't even say one line right. It's a wonder that an accomplished actor like Shaw even finished filming this scene with him.
Neat stuff for any Jaws fan, however ..check it out. Jaws is #1 in my book, I hope they re-release it for its 25th anniversary next year in 2000, that would be cool if it was digitally remastered in theaters...hope they do.
Titanic (1997)
to all you naysayers
say what you want about titanic ..it's made over a billion dollars worldwide and still continues to grow.it's becoming a classic like gone with the wind still is .. the acting may not have been a 10 but come on in the 90's there haven't been very many critical movies unless you like watching boring independent films or limited boring release films like mrs brown or elizabeth or shakespeare in love ..people like to see action ,romance and thrills .critical acclaim is fine and titanic deserves critical acclaim it was a hell of a movie.i loved it and always will.
The Return of the King (1980)
same ol thing as the hobbit
i enjoyed reading the books more than watching the same tired old animation by rankin bass...fine for kiddies but still below par animation...why they went back to this low grade animation after ralph bakshis fantastic animation in the lord of the rings beats me. and the voice-overs were done by the same people from the hobbit..i think they were way below the voice-overs in the lord of the rings movie .. the hobbit was neat in its time but the return of the king is an unfair adaptation of the remaining 11/2 books ...i heard they are making a live action version of the lord of the rings in 3 parts i hope they use generated effects for some of the characters because midgets arent the same as hobbits ...i look forward to seeing all 3 movies
The Lord of the Rings (1978)
loved it
every time i watch this movie i get engrossed and wish i was in middle-earth...always takes me away ..esp the mines of moria.. the animation is superb and neat..i was 13 and saw it in limited release on the big screen.i think they should re-release it .. now that millions have read the books ,it may be hard to comprehend if you haven't read em but just sit back and enjoy the ride .. most people who would go see it have read the books .i always kept hoping that bakshi would make a sequel to finish the trilogy. maybe someday someone else will do it to make up for the awful rankin/bass animated return of the king...can't wait for the live action trilogy,1st one suppossed to be out next year sometime...
