Pleasantville (1998)
Great escapism
Savor this movie! The basic Twilight-Zone plot of the blurring (and eventually disappearing) lines between fantasy and reality is not really new, but Pleasantville turns out to be a real original for a few reasons. The Art Direction is superb; the movie looks like a freshly painted canvas. The look of the film within a film makes you want to suspend reality and step into the old TV-show set yourself, to smell the clean air and reminisce about the way things never really were. The cast is charming and unpredictable and really has you rooting for the characters. This one should have won at least a few awards.
Phoenix (1998)
A notch above the usual "caper" movie
Not bad. Good dialogue and realistic, funny interplay between all the leads lifts this a notch above the usual "caper" movie. Liotta's charismatic as always, and brings more than one level to his character.
A Face to Die For (1996)
Fun histrionics
Pretty entertaining, as far as these TV soapers go. Nothing happens that you can't see coming a few commercial breaks away, but the cast is fun and the story is reminiscent of those great old Joan Crawford melodramas with plots that only make sense at 3 a.m.
