Pearl Harbor (2001)
Trite and shallow.
If this were the only way to make modern generations aware of historic events, I'm glad it was made. However, the creators obviously think the audience is simple minded and grasping for familiarity. Yes, the Arizona is the most recognizable casualty of the depicted day, but the name was dropped so incessantly, you'd think it was the only one. That's the trend of the whole movie. Only the well known events are explored, and even then in a shallow manner. The dialogue is predictable and recycled, as is the plot. The imagery is excellent, but beyond that, I can find few other merits to this film. It is an excellent example of Hollywood's lack of hope in the intelligence of its viewers.
Maximum Velocity (2003)
Pretty forgettable.
This film pretty much lived up to the expectations of a low budget action movie. There were some bad actors, the leads were ok and the story and dialogue was pretty predictable. Pretty much all the characters play parts they've played many times before. The Air Force was not shown in the best of lights, with only scheming and weaselish characters in the forefront. It wasn't really campy by my definition, which might've made it more fun. It's lack of shining moments of good or bad made to film pretty forgettable. I just saw it myself a day ago and the details have already faded. Basically if you go into it with no expectations then you'll come out of it shrugging.
