Well I've read the other comments, even checked out Roger Ebert, trying to find the reason for all the praise some people give it, but I can't get it. A story of people fighting with each other, murdering each other, commiting adultery, and worst of all mistreating the dogs that are essential for their survival, among the incessant crunching of snow under boots. This has to be considered a home movie and it leaves a lousy opinion of the Inuit people, which I know can't be this bad. Ebert says it involves somes legend, what that is I don't know.

The Cell
(2000)
Why did I rent this?
26 January 2001
I saw this movie on the shelf and thought by reading the blurbs on the back that it sounded interesting. I started to watch it and thought the director really knew how to use cinematography. Lighting and arrangement were perfect, color was superb. I was even getting interested in the plot. (This was just the beginning.) Somewhere soon though I realized this was just a piece of self-indulgent crap. I really feel the director is not a really smart person-just like me. But, don't we want smart people like Steven Speilberg, or Spike Lee, or Soderbergh, etc to direct the movies we watch. All the effort Singh put in to this is such a waste of time, his and mine. The worst thing was wasting Jennifer Lopez, and Vince Vaughn, and the other fine actors, as well as me feeling at the end that I didn't care if anybody lived or died in the end, (except for the dog.)

Terrible and boring
23 October 1999
Except for the cinematography, I was truely bored by this movie. Was the director trying to be shocking, or clever, or funny. Nothing was accomplished as far as I can tell. I kept waiting for something clever to occur but it never did. The ending was ridiculous, and much of the gore was overdone. With such a good cast, how could this director make such a mess.
Absence of the Good

Tricky movie
18 October 1999
I don't particularly like Stephen Baldwin, as an actor, but his blank face wasn't a total loss as a grieving father in this twisty mystery. The character called for a "numb" person, who became involved in a dynamic situation, which frustrated and enraged, as people died in strange ways, and the police raced to figure out who was going to be next. The acting wasn't that great, but the story held my interest. Worth a look.

I'm a sentimental guy..

Hey, if you've got a sentimental bone in your body, you will like this movie. I was already to write a bad review, but then I read it was a true story, so I watched the whole thing, and I cried like a baby. Try it. If you've got dry eyes your a sad case. :)
The Thin Red Line

Better than?
17 July 1999
I will write another comment after seeing the more recent version of this movie, but it seems it will be hard to beat. The film doesn't seem to follow the book all that well, but is an excellent movie. It is well directed, and very well acted, and yes younger people, black and white is a valid medium. I imagine Malick will use lots of special effects, but I'll reserve judgment until I see it.

Hey, it's a lot of fun
3 July 1999
I can't believe others took such a serious view of all this. God, it was a lot of fun rooting for Hop-a-long Cassidy. It was a great tribute to the Western serials of years ago. It wasn't meant to be a great cinema experience, except it was. So what if there wasn't a big special effects bonanza. It was a fun, tongue in cheek, look at old Western's. Man, relax and enjoy.

A strange family
14 January 1999
It was a time of drugs, sex and Disco. I felt some strange feeling of family in this movie. It was interesting to see the inner workings of Studio 54. I liked "The Last Days of Disco" better, but felt warmer watching "54", like there was some hope after all the mess.
