Dogville (2003)
i thought it was brilliant
hmm, i thought this movie was brilliant. i didn't think it was too long. i have a bootlegged copy that said it was an hour and a half, and i didn't even notice it was twice that. whatever it was a comment on, i don't pretend to know. and i don't understand how it was a comment on america, and not everyone in the world. aside from that, i thought everything worked about it, the minimal props on the black stage, the acting was great. what was so great that is so rare i think, is that all the motivations and scenario are so well thought out that it could play out logically and predictable, like an endgame, but they don't, and that contrast is where you face the authors message about human nature. the end is very satisfying too. go rent this and eyes wide shut, have everyone over, and have a good ol'time.

give yourself a chance
Let me tell you a little about art. Art tells you about yourself. When you react negatively and declare that a movie is garbage this says something about your aesthetics. It is one of the grandest illusions there ever was to blame someone or something else for your own reaction. That is what hell is: you torturing yourself. The intention of the artist is so often attacked, as if the man really just picked up a piece of trash and called it 'art'. Art is not a conscious conclusion. And if it is your interpretation that it is a piece of trash labeled 'art', then you must think art is exactly what it is not, a cold rational fact. As if it were a crime to find beauty in anything and everything there is. And as if there should be a rational reason for it to be such. Give yourself a break and allow yourself to experience something other than your cold hard rationality. Reason is predictable. The fun of the game is that don't know the outcome.
Babe: Pig in the City (1998)
A Classic
This film will one day be recognized as a classic. It is cinematic magic from beginning to end. Who cares what it is about and whether it is dark (and what film doesn't have a dark element, there is a nasty trend where we are supposed to keep the darker impulses from the wee ones, as if ignorance is wisdom), it is wonderful to look at, the acting is amazing, the animals are perfectly on cue, the action sequences are brilliant. It is a lovely and colorful dream, that yes might be a bit fantastical. So what? Imagine what a difference a movie set must be when it is predominantly animals in the movie.
Vivre sa vie: Film en douze tableaux (1962)
wonderful
Apart from the fact that a woman as beautiful as Anna Karina would never have to turn to prostitution, and also that it doesn't just take desperation for a woman to turn to prostitution, but a woman who has been sexually abused in her childhood, this movie was great. I suppose the apparent situation isn't the point of the film, it is just a mask.
Here is my VERY brief summary and interpretation: Nana is a very idealistic young woman and she has her sights set on being in the moving pictures and kills herself in a roundabout way because she couldn't realize that she is in a movie. It was right before her eyes the whole time and she couldn't see it.
Xi zao (1999)
well acted and very delightful
Like another reviewer said, this movie is not a heavy melodrama, but it deals with harsh realities. A very very playful movie that does not dwell for a moment. Some very good acting and some wonderful smiles as well.
Minority Report (2002)
good for you Steven
More than i liked the movie itself, I admire Mr. Spielberg for making a challenging movie. I admire him using his power to make his flock look to the future, and for hopefully inspiring even the briefest philosophical reflection in each viewer. That alone is noble and worthy of praise in my opinion. For some reason the futuristic "look" is cliche to me. That is one criticism, and a lame one at that. I really like Max von Sydow too. I want to see the movie again.
Mulholland Dr. (2001)
amazing
I can't exactly explain the entire movie, but that evidently isn't the point of it. There is no band...the orchestra is recorded...no one is who they really are...they want to be something else...something they can't have...because they are absolutely mortified...it is in someone's interest that it went down...or was that scene related at all? Not an uplifting movie at all, but where'd you get those tits?
Star Wars: Episode II - Attack of the Clones (2002)
star w**k
i have to say that i just got back from star wars and i was very disappointed. I was excited, i thought it was going to be good. It was ok, but it was boring i thought. there was only a couple cool parts. when obi-wan and annikan go after that bounty hunter at the beginning was cool, when obi wan leaps through the window and catches that thing, that whole part was cool. every single sticky situation was lame. especially that stupid part where annikan and the amidala are stuck in that factory. even to see yoda fight seemed a joke to me. maybe it was supposed to be funny. those close ups of yoda during the duel were for some reason seemed to mock the whole series. and the part where you see yoda with all the kindergarden jedis was a total joke. I don't know why, i thought it was going to be good. the love story sucked. the guy who played annikan was good, and so was obi wan for the most part. i actually like jar jar binks, the underwater scene in the first one is my only lasting memory of that movie. i'm not into the politics, all i know is that all of a sudden there was an enormous war. i liked it better when there was only a few jedis, not an army of jedis. it was a joke, a moderately entertaining joke though. i was never too into star wars anyways. i'm all about tron. i guess there is no tron-starwars rivalry, but i feel like the underdog in one.
Tron (1982)
watch it again
If you haven't watched it in awhile, watch it. Not only had nothing been done like this before, but it still looks great and is more relevant than ever. It's about faith, power, corruption, revolution, and video games. Bridges and Warner are awesome. The sound effects are amazing. I'm sure this movie will makes it's overdue resurgence soon.
Amistad (1997)
Better than Saving Private Ryan
I'm amazed at how little mention this film gets. I'm amazed that Spielberg himself puts this film down. This film is very clear; its themes are reachable. It has images in it as captivating as any Spielberg has done. Anthony Hopkins is amazing, and his speech at the end will send shivers down your spine. There is the beautiful scene of Hounsou and McConaughey character's communicating perfectly in languages the other doesn't know. It's about the essence of justice, injustice, passion, differences, samenesses, ignorance, greed...One of my favorite movies.
