The Haunting (1999)
needs no take up reel, just let it fall on the floor.
if a mashed potato scares you may, only may, be frightened by this cliche fest. how can a big budget, well made, good actors, wonderful effects, excellent photography, be so bad? see it and find out. i never sniff ed glue, but this must be what a "bummer" glue trip is all about. ed wood, with a big budget. after you see this, try to think of some worse films. for me only "wings over honolulu" and "what dreams may come" approach this nadir.
Anjaam (1994)
Everybody dies. I mean everybody.
This is a movie of extremes. I don't think any moviemaker here would dare to make this baby. It is a real hoot where everyone with a speaking part snuffs it with the exception of four. I can only assume they fled the set or they ran out of film. Filmed in cliche-ville rather than Bombay, this is a film that is past parody , as if done by Saturday Night Live & Mad TV together. The acting is first rate, the dancing of the best, and the plot is unforgettable {or unforgivable} Rush to your nearest Indian grocery and rent this baby ,and squat down and watch this beauty because it is one of a kind. Must be seen to believe such a film could exist. The out-takes of this film should be worth a million R.s as no one could have had a straight face and I bet they were laughing totally. If you think this movie is bad, rent "Madam X" (The Indian magazine 'Stardust' voted it the worst movie ever made} It was the only film in history where they didn't use a takeup reel{as it ran through the projector, they just let it flutter to the floor.
Heer Ranjha (1992)
Romeo and Juliet, with fabulous camera work
I didn't know this was Romeo and Juliet until it was nearly over and if you are not familiar with R & J it would be a better picture with an element of surprise. But you can't fault the plot and the scenes, acting, dancing, and imagery are tops.
Gadjo dilo (1997)
The must see gypsy film.
Perhaps a bit more than we wanted to know about gypsies , but then our movies are probably way more about"gadjos" than they want. A beautiful, perfectly filmed view of "rom" life with fantastically good music, humor, pathos, and sitting in a movie theater, they can't pick your pocket or put a gypsy curse on you. Also you are spared the tedious drive to Rumania and have subtitles so you know what's going on. The only american film i would compare it to would be "Smoke Signals". Which also is tops in its field. All in all a 10.
Smoke Signals (1998)
This is a bad movie for Hollywood and almost all the industry because:
The main trouble with Smoke Signals is that after you see it you will be disappointed with not only the rest of the movies or television you are likely to see but also with most of the films you have seen before it.Since too many people haven't seen it you will have to listen to people talk about "what dreams may come",or some such. You can't tell people that a guy sitting on a van giving a traffic report when there is no traffic,is more humorous than most sit-coms.But that is the trouble when a true 10 picture comes out, it tends to drop many of the others a point. If you haven't seen it rent it or better buy it. but be warned that you may be watching another movie and you will think "who needs this ----" i could be watching "Smoke signals"
L'empire de la nuit (1962)
I really liked this spoof.
this movie is a clever spoof of every grade B detective movie of the "Guy Noir" type of of movie from the 30s 40s ,whenever. No cliche is left out including a chase scene on horseback. Sort of a pre "dead men don't wear plaid". Eddie Constantine keeps a straight face throughout, but the audience can't.
Chaalbaaz (1989)
Sri Devi at her best
Sri Devi is at her best in this Hindi comedy/action movie. She plays a dual role and as usual is perfect in both parts ,great supporting actors and a corny but lovable story. Well worth watching.
Pakeezah (1972)
pakeezah=purity(and perfect)
Mina Kumari exhibits more style and grace just moving from standing, to sitting on the floor than you can find in most other movies. The director has produced more memorable scenes of touching beauty than it would seem possible. The music and dancing is of the highest possible quality. You may notice in the first dance scene the director has all sorts of things occurring in the background:other girl dancing, a drunk falling down stairs, much activity, but he knew that we would be watching Mina dance and I'll bet unless you viewed this many times, you didn't notice. All in all, perfection.J.Q.
