Hannibal (2001)
Silence of the Lambs for simpletons
I saw Hannibal last night and I have to say it was the worst film I have seen in the cinema since I can remember. It is a travesty to the memory of Silence of the Lambs with under written characters, no subtlety, a skewed narrative which fails to efface moments of transition and a lot of down right silly moments. I wept for Lector and Starling. They have taken the characters and poohed on them from a grand height. Oh yeah and Ridely Scott was totally the wrong director to choose. Over produced and overly violent for the sake of it. The only saving graces were Anthony Hopkin who hams things up but is still watchable and Julianne more who struggles with a bad script but manages to maintain some integrity.
Frankly it was doomed to failure from the start, with all parties involved seeing pound signs before their eyes before a good story.
Another sequel to add to the 'Must miss' list.
Little Voice (1998)
Trying too hard.....
Unfortunately, Little Voice doesn't live up to the hype at all.
In trying too hard it presented its characters as caricatures with no real depth and an uncanny ability to be really annoying. Although there were a few poignant moments which were admittedly quite touching, it often failed to make a real impact by including unnecessary jokes which spoilt the atmosphere.
The plot was merely a string of cringe worthy moments designed to make the viewer remarkably uncomfortable. Not only that but they were predictable too. It was these moments especially which left a sour taste in the mouth.
Avoid at all costs.
The Lavender Hill Mob (1951)
Witty, deviously clever and lots of fun.
This is the kind of small yet concise and entertaining movie that I find mouth wateringly delicious. It's gentle and amusing story of a bungled robbery (that we see all to little of in these times of the ultra violent heist movie) really clicks home the message that you can make a decent crime film without including death or bad language.
Fearless (1993)
A film with a narrative of emotions.
Fearless is fantastic film. It respects the viewers intelligence and allows the emotional plot to unfold without having to spell it out. There are many connotations within this film and the viewer can take what he/she wants from it. It also contains the most horrific yet almost poetic plane crash sequence ever committed to film.
Simply excellent.
