Argylle (2024)
A glorious back to form for Matthew Vaughn
I'm a huge fan of Matthew Vaugn and his work, Kingsman is one of my favourite movies ever, and I have to say this movie matches it in terms of story telling, style and execution.
More and more is relevealed as the movie progresses, there are quite a few twist and turns, but everything is explained in due time and to my mind in a very satisfactory way.
When watching movies like these, you have to understand and they aren't really meant to be taken seriously. They are pure entertainment, and this movie delievers in spades. The acting, action and settings are superb, and I did really like the story as well.
One thing that struck me was how little the trailer gave away, which I can only applaude. They did an excellent job with this in Kingsman as well, where they totally omitted the church sequence from promotional material, and I had my suspicions that they did something similar here. Was I right? Watch it and you tell me!
The Equalizer 3 (2023)
A solid installment with flaws
I love these movies, and The Equalizer 3 was a solid installment in the franchise. The story was good, the environments beautiful and the movie is really well produced. But I can't shake the feeling that this was made by a different team than the previous two.
First of all, the action has been cut down quite significantly. The action we get to see is great of course, and the movie has more of a threatening aura than anything else. McCall does however seem to enjoy it a bit too much in this one I feel, in many cases is enemies are more or less tortured to death rather than outright killed.
Speaking of the action, they for some reason completely removed the mechanic where McCall takes in his surroundings and plans his course of attack. This was one of the hallmarks of the two previous movies, and I don't get why they removed something that awesome.
The story was good, but in the end, it felt under-developed and some aspects of it should have gotten way more attention. It felt to me like they cut maybe 30 minutes about 70% into the movie, like there was supposed to be more there before McCall decided that enough is enough.
Good movie though, carried mainly by Washington, Fanning and the beautiful scenery of Italy.
The King's Man (2021)
A masterful entry to an amazing franchise
This movie took me by surprise. Kingsman (2014) is one of my favorite movies of all time, and I also really enjoyed The Golden Circle, but this one has a different feel to it. The respect they pay to history and historical events is nothing short of spectacular, and it really shows that despite the fact that they make action fun, they change the tone completely when it comes to actual warfare.
There's never a dull moment in this movie, all characters are acted amazingly well and to my mind, it could even have been a little longer. But I really do hope that this is not our last visit to the Kingsman universe, because it feels like we are just getting started.
The Gingerdead Man (2005)
This movie puzzles me
This is one of those movies that you really can't figure out the point of. I seriously don't know what they were thinking when they made this. What experience is the audience supposed to get when watching it? The murders are unimaginative, poorly executed and boring. So very, very boring. There are some pore attempts at humor, but they are equally lousy. This movie is really bad, and not even in a funny way, because it feels like they are actually trying.
At about one hour and ten minutes, I suppose you could suffer through it if you have absolutely nothing else to do with your time, but I wouldn't recommend it to anyone.
Steel Trap (2007)
A quite bad attempt at thriller/horror
I can watch almost all kinds of movies without any greater problems, but one of my pet peeves have always been poorly made horror movies. Some directors seem to think that this is the easiest genre out there, and that anyone can make a horror movie, but nothing could be further from the truth.
Steel Trap is yet another really poor attempt at making a buck of other peoples original ideas. At first, I thought this would be something of a Saw type of movie, but it is more like a straight forward slasher. Nothing new here.
The script and acting is OK at times, but those times are rare and really overshadowed by the sometimes down-right retarded decisions made by the characters. It's really not that difficult to attract say the police or fire department to a skyscraper in the middle of a large city.
If you're bored out of your skull, I suppose this movie is better than staring at the wall or re-arranging your sock drawer, but if you've got anything, and I do mean ANYTHING, better to do, I suggest you do that instead of watching Steel Trap.
The Fog (2005)
Stop whining, this movie is OK.
Don't pay too much attention to the reviews and cry babies, The Fog is a slightly above average horror flick, nothing more, nothing less.
The Fog might not be a cinematic masterpiece, but if you enjoy the horror franchise, there is really no reason to avoid this movie. The story line is OK, the acting is quite acceptable and some scenes offer great thrills and suspension. The movie picks up pace right at the very beginning, and doesn't let go until the end, and the story will keep you guessing right until it all unfolds.
One area that could use a little touch up is the CGI, since this movie uses a lot of it, and it's far from top notch. This is however an aspect of the movie that is forgivable, and it doesn't ruin the experience.
It doesn't compare well to masterpieces such as Ju-On or what have you, but it's still quite enjoyable. Everyone should just form their own opinions about this one.
Ballistic: Ecks vs. Sever (2002)
It's actually ok!
Despite the fact that Talisa Soto can't really act, I think this was a pretty good movie.
The only thing that strikes me as odd is how the plot is described and outlined. Not in the movie itself, but on the DVD-case and such. It's totally inaccurate! However, this movie is ok, and I do recommend it to those who aren't too afraid of a little B action.
Death to Smoochy (2002)
Nothing short of brilliant
Yes, I mean it. This movie was fantastic in every way, and so extremely honest and cynical. The story was very clever and the characters well crafted. Some people don't seem to like this movie, and I can't figure out why that is. Sure, it's honest and very dark in some ways, but that is why it's one of the most refreshing movies I've seen in years.
Trust me, the enthusiasm of Edward Norton and everyone elses clear intent of smashing that positive attitude to pieces will put a smile on your face.
Omega Doom (1996)
Pure trash
I give this movie a 2. It's really really bad, and the only reason I bought it on DVD is that it was a double feature (with Blind Fury, very good movie).
This movie is flat, it has no story, and the acting is laughable. Almost as laughable and poor as the "special" effects.
The One (2001)
Great action from the first frame to the last!
Yes, this is a REAL action movie. My only complaint is that it is a bit short, and when that is your only complaint, you know you like the movie.
Personally I HATE futuristic weapons and such, especially when it is not motivated (The Sixth Day). Sure, the weapons they use are somewhat futuristic, but they don't shoot laser beams. I prefer bullets, and in these kinds of movies, bullets are needed for effect. Luckily.
I can compare the opening sequence in this movie with Swordfish. When you see these "intro's", you think to yourself "WOW! I hope this movie will be this cool all the time!". This movie IS. Swordfish wasn't.
Family Guy (1999)
"Brilliant" comes to mind
These shows will always be compared to The Simpsons, since that was the first really good animated satire made for television. Some really good ones, like South Park and Futurama has come along since then, but The Simpsons is still the original. The creators of these shows know this, so the shows that pop up have different ways of attacking society. Futurama, for instance, does it from a futuristic point of view, and South Park is almost a bit political at times, but they are both GREAT shows.
I haven's missed an episode of Family Guy, and I just love the show. It's just really brilliant, and Stewie is one of the funniest and most evil characters I've seen in years. All character (except maybe Meg) are brilliant, and I love them all. This shows angle on society is television, and it does a really good job at ridiculing it. No show is left untouched, and they have just started.
One BIG part of Family Guy is the flashbacks. They are absolutely incredible. My favorite is "I remember the last time I accepted a coupon from a man in a chicken suit". They are so insane and wonderful that you just want to keep them in your pocket and take them out on special events to show your friends (the flashbacks).
Well, just enjoy the show, I know I will. Yeay Seth MacFarlane!!
"Must kill Abraham Lincoln..."
Plump Fiction (1997)
Well, what can I say?
It's painfully obvious that the people who made this "movie" have never seen such brilliant spoofs as "The Naked Gun" and "Hot Shots". This movie is terrible, and so are the actors. They wouldn't know acting even if it hit them in the face, as I felt like doing while watching this total pile of rubbish.
The movie is stupid and has no humor in it what so ever. I'm SURE that I could make a better movie with my friends. To me it's amazing that a movie can fail this much. Not a single clever or funny line. No trace of intelligence behind it. It's a pathetic movie and I'd like to meet the person who actually likes this movie. Yuck!
Bullitt (1968)
Kind of ok, I guess...
I usually like these movies. I'm a big fan of the "Dirty Harry"-movies, and I like the style. This movie was kind of OK. Not Callahan-OK, but OK. Worth the two hours. The movie in itself was fast and had a few turns, which I liked. All and all a good movie.
Galaxy Quest (1999)
Smashing!
Just in my taste, perfect movie! It's really funny, and sometimes really serious. Done in a very good way. It's also a great parody on Star Trek. As all good movies, this one has some really golden scenes. Like the one where the crew is being examined by giant squids with tools. I still laugh when I think about it. Don't miss out!
House on Haunted Hill (1999)
What a Rush, Geoffrey!
Let me just start by saying that very few movies make me chill. This is most certainly one of them. Incredible music combined with intelligent camera control and lighting makes this movie a smash hit. Great "jump-factor" as well. Geoffrey Rush plays the somewhat odd millionaire Steven Price. This guy basically scares the crap out of people for a living, and that's why he thinks that the House on Haunted Hill would be a perfect place to host his wife's birthday party. The big question through the movie is this: Is the house alive? Well? Is it? See it...
Sleepy Hollow (1999)
It delivers!
Come on, seriously, what's wrong with Tim Burton? Can't he ever make a "normal" movie? But on the other hand, why would we want him to? His movies are great! The same goes for Sleepy Hollow. You can always see that Burton has a sick-funny-twisted sense of humor. The movie is as funny as it is violent, cause it really is (both). And boy, that Danny Elfman can sure write music.
Cruel Intentions (1999)
Twisted, evil and other goodies.
What a delight. Finally. Something this sexy and provocative has been produced by Hollywood. Not very common, but this might actually mean that the Americans are loosing up. The movie in it self is pretty interesting and sometimes fun, in an evil way. The end is kind of fare I guess. Don't miss it.
BASEketball (1998)
Fantastic!
This movie isn't really the kind of movie you might expect when you see the name David Zucker. It's not as "non-stop-crazy" as The Naked Gun, but it's filled with similar humor. This might sound crazy, but the movie isn't ONLY extremely funny, it's actually very good! It feels like they put a lot of effort into this title, and that's always good. Small note: This is Robert Vaughn's one hundred movie!
Speed 2: Cruise Control (1997)
"Disappointment" comes to mind..
This is really sad. Speed was such a great movie, and then they make this as a sequel. Too bad really. I think this is the first big-budget-action-movie I've seen that I don't like. Needless to say, I usually find action-movies very entertaining. Don't really know what's wrong with this one though. I just didn't like it. Sorry.
Event Horizon (1997)
Not that great.
They managed to get a couple of good actors and some serious funding. This, however, isn't enough to make a good movie, apparently. Which is sad, cause this one could have been great! At first, the movie seems like it can go somewhere. But it doesn't. It gets weird and complicated. No higher than a four I'm afraid...
Speed (1994)
Very creative!
This movie is very intelligent and has some very creative ideas. I've never been that fond of Dennis Hopper, but in this movie his performance is excellent. There's nothing like a truly evil villain. I've always been a big fan of bombs, as well as action-movies, and in this one, I get it all! :)
The Sixth Sense (1999)
What a brilliant piece of work!
This movie was much better than I thought. Not only was it creepy, but it was also incredibly well acted. I've seen many movies. I remember almost every single one of them as well, but I don't think I've ever seen a movie with such incredibly brilliant ending. The movie is worth watching for the ending alone. Don't miss this movie. You'll regret it, I promise.
The Matrix (1999)
If you don't like it, you don't get it!
This movie is one of the best movies I've ever seen. It's really got everything you could ever ask. Thrill, excitement and action!
One other point, and a rather big one, is that this movie doesn't rely on special effects. All the FX are a part of the movie.
This movie is a masterpiece, and should be treated as one. Rent it, watch it, buy it! :)
South Park: Bigger, Longer & Uncut (1999)
Groundbreaking!!!
Groundbreaking I say? Yes! Very much so.. This movie is very much like The Matrix in a way: If you don't like it, you don't get it. :)
This movie points at everything that's wrong with the american society, and plenty of other societies for that matter. If you listen carefully to the songs, you'll hear it. The point of this movie it NOT to be as obscene as possible, but to point out that the hypocritical societies of today have such incredible restrictions against foul language (you can't say "s**t" on american tv), but tolerates almost every degree of violence. This is very twisted, and the movie shows that in a wonderful way.
But anyhow, if you have plenty of humor and love South Park, you WON'T get disappointed! I bought it on DVD, and so should you. Trey Parker and Matt Stone are geniuses.
A Clockwork Orange (1971)
What a piece of ****!!
When I sat down to watch this movie, I was filled with expectations. My dad had told me that this was the best movie ever made, and that it was VERY violent. One movie later, I was astonished. I don't think I've ever seen a much worse movie. Well, maybe Mr. Stitch, with Rutger Hauer, but that's about it. What violence? What excitement? NONE!! IT'S GOT N-O-T-H-I-N-G!! As far as I'm concerned, this movie had been better of if it's never been made at all. Guess what my vote was... :)
