Fukkatsu no hi (1980)
A most interesting film indeed... very Japanese
I remember the first time I saw this film, I was rather enthralled. I kept watching just to see what would happen next. You knew something was up once this virus was released and the world would begin to slowly die. I thought some of the items touched on were intriguing enough, as in the post rape of a woman in the research center and how they had to come to grips with morality and social precepts in a society where the gender ratio was WAY out of balance.
I've been a big fan of anime for as long as I can remember, and this has all the ear marks of the tragic hero (?) overcoming impossible odds to survive (Hokuto no Ken meets Delta Force?). At first it doesn't seem as the main character has won anything... walking away from the nuclear destruction in Washington to having a metaphysical conversation with a dessicated corpse in a ruined church.... rather stirring. I truly think the film needs a second look. Don't just watch it once... come back to it and look deeper. In a way, it's like spaghetti or chili, always better the second time around from the pot :)
Kidô senshi Gundam 0083: Stardust Memory (1991)
Possibly the best of the lot
I have been a fan of Gundam for almost 20 years and have seen it through it's various incarnations. While I am no authority on anime, I definitely know what I like. I used to think Zeta Gundam was a pinnacle in mecha design and plot twists, but this one brings it all home.
The character design, story telling and music are all A+ #1
It's one thing to just think of them as giant robots, or big tanks, but this series brought out how hard it was to be a pilot of one of these devices, both physically as well as psychologically.
If you can, I advise getting it!
Rock & Rule (1983)
A definitive CLASSIC!
I was introduced to this movie as one of those that HBO CONSTANTLY showed in between other features MANY years ago.
At the time I was really into bands such The Cure, Depeche Mode, etc, so the style is what caught me. Also, being a VERY big fan of Cheap Trick, you find it hard to miss the fact that Omar, Dizzy and Stretch look very much like the fabled three :)
Mok is also a favorite character... kinda like an evil cross between Mick Jagger and David Bowie. Angel is Debby Harry no end.
The songs are good. The story hysterical and very tight. The anime is good for it's time, much better than Bakshi's Lord of The Rings.
If you haven't seen it... I recommend that you do.
Just remember..."No Santa Clause... No Easter Bunny... and NO UNCLE MIKEY"
Logan's Run (1976)
Dated - but very provocative
I agree with the first comment on the movie, but to a certain point. Albeit the film does radically switch gears on you after a certain amount of action and very interesting interaction... it is still most interesting considering the time in which it was made.
I saw the film when it was first in theaters, and then later on read the novel on which it was based. If you've read the book, it became more interesting when the "end-age" was 21 rather than 30. Although, the book had more detail (as they often do) they would never be able to make it again closer to the novel without breaking several laws!
I wish that the DVD had better sound, as I really always have loved the movie. Still... if you haven't seen it... give it a try! At the very least, it has some interesting scenery in it
