The Beast from 20,000 Fathoms (1953)
A great Saturday afternoon Sci-fi flick
A rainy Saturday afternoon, cup of hot chocolate (coffee for some), and the Beast. This is what Saturday afternoons were made for. This movie is one of the best examples of the 50's monster attacks city variety. Even down to the selection of the central characters is classic 50's idealism. The old but extremely lovable professor of paleontology (old man=old science), his adoring, in a daughterly way, assistant (young woman=available for), the handsome and dashing professor of nuclear energy (young man=new science). I could write more but I'm out of space, recommend you watch this one.
The Slime People (1963)
Only for the hard core.
The Slime People would only appeal to the hard core lover of early science fiction movies. The over extensive use of the fog machine makes it difficult to see some of the scenes clearly enough to follow the action. The traditional wholesome characters (50's style, men at table discussing important things, woman putting away the dishes) engaging in supposedly serious discussions/explanations of the Slime folks "wall of fog" is just plain funny. But when all is said and done the movie did entertain me, but certainly not for everyone. Hats off to the actress stuck playing Bonnie, the dumb blonde teenager.
The Deadly Mantis (1957)
A fine example of 50's Sci-fi movies.
The Deadly Mantis is a fine example of the best of the 1950's vintage science fiction movies. A good story line with enjoyable character interaction. The movies use of documentary footage to introduce scientific or geographic fact into the setting of the fiction was classic 50's. I actual learned something about the multi-million dollar "DEW" Line. Today's modern viewer may complain about the special effects, but remember that the movie was made in 1957 not 1997. With that in mind, rent the movie, pretend you're at the drive-in, and have an enjoyable evening.
Creature from the Black Lagoon (1954)
Good locations and great plot.
This movie has a great story line and good character acting. The movie locations and camera shots are clean and add real depth to this film. The background sound of blaring horns when the gill man appears is a little jagged on the nerves, but I suspect it was meant to be. Gets my blood pumping and goosebumps up. If you're in the mood for a film of this type with a strong plot, good acting, and suspense watch this one.
Face Down (1997)
A good entertaining story whch held my interest, worth watching.
All-in-all a good story that held my interest from start to finish. (better than most so called Blockbusters). Made for TV movies are off to great start if this is an example. The performance given to a very complex character by a Ms Kelli Maroney was unparalleled. Hope she does more roles in the future. One warning, Face Down is definitely late night viewing only, a little heavy in the sex and nudity, but the plot is still enjoyable.
