I went to see the movie, knowing there were going to be many changes. I didn't mind the ommission of characters, events, etc. It was the total disregard for the true essence of the characters. I believe he butchered the book. I didn't regognize that winny, effemenite person as Aragorn. Not only was he denied his birthright, they made him nobody, someone who is in exile of his people, which he was not. The fact that Arwen was put into such a key postion, I knew before I went in. I thought I was prepared, but I was so angered when I saw it,my friends asked me if I wanted to leave, for I was so upset.
I stayed, and saw more desecration. I cannot continue, if the other two follow I no doubt Arwen will be stoming Mordor or slaying the Nazgul herself.
I love fantasy movies, but I truly cannot say I enjoyed this one. Not only the butchering of the book but the action scenes were too blurred together to make any enjoyment of the fights. I know many people enjoyed it, but I am too much of a purist, I've read and re-read Tolkien for over 20 years. If this movie makes people pick up the books and read true art, then they serve a purpose. Other than that, not evenf the special effects impressed me much. I think better than they were not made at all.
I have just one message for the writers and directors. Next time you make a movie from a book. READ THE BOOK.
