Komodo (1999)
What these Komodos lack in speed, they make up for in poisoned drool
The plot holes and poor writing in this movie drove me insane. I just hope that a therapist doesn't make me watch this movie again to snap me out of it. It's a good thing 'terrible' movies are one of my favorite genres or I would have put a gun to my head.
Me, Myself & Irene (2000)
Extremely funny with shoddy storytelling: typical Farrely bros. fare
I laughed till I cried but I wish that the Farrelys would take the time to work on the other elements of their movies besides just the belly laughs, such as writing interesting villains (see Dumb and Dumber, Kingpin, and Me, Myself & Irene to know what I'm talking about).
And you'd think when they're making a movie about a mental disorder they could at least get it right. Charlie didn't have schizophrenia, he had dissociative identity disorder!! Schizo's DO NOT have multiple personalities! What really confuses me is even those who were protesting the movie were against it's portrayal of schizophrenics. Doesn't anybody know the difference??
Don't get me wrong, the movie was exactly what I was looking for and more. I loved it! But until the Farrelys can improve the overall quality of their movies, they won't be comparable to great comedic movie makers like the Coen bros. (see Big Lebowski to find out why). overall: 8.5 out of 10
Rolling Vengeance (1987)
This movie is good for a laugh.
This movie must be enjoyed in the same manner as The Phantom Menace. It is badly written and badly acted but offers tons of deliciously implausible violence.
Star Wars: Episode I - The Phantom Menace (1999)
Unengaging - sort of like watching a flashy video game
I have to say that I found this movie far more boring than the first trilogy. The special effects may have been much more spectacular, but I knew this would be the case. What I was not expecting is how much this visual advancement would detract from the actual movie. George Lucas should have spent the sixteen year layoff between films to write a decent script rather than wait for effects to catch up to his vision. The dialogue was terrible, especially by Jar Jar Binks, his race, and the Trade Federation (what is "ex-squeeze me?" doing in a Star Wars movie?!?).
Also, there is absolutely no character development for the new characters (Samuel L. Jackson, Liam Neeson, or the surprisingly uninteresting Darth Maul). The characters all have an exceptional look, but the awe I feel towards them is only paper thin. I never cared for any of them as I cared for Solo or Luke, and why should I when they show absolutely no emotion.
There are some elements of the movie I did enjoy a lot. Senator Palpatine and Anakin's mother are both stand-outs in this movie because they are given the most room to act without relying on computer enhancement. Also, the choreography for the lightsabre fights are incredible, possibly the best action sequences I've ever seen, but these flashes of brilliance are too few and far between.
Overall, I gave this film an imdb rating of 6 out of 10. I was really hoping to be able to give it a 10. Hopefully, Lucas will follow suit as he did for his last trilogy and pass the reigns to fresh screen-writers and directors because I'm not sure Lucas himself is willing (or maybe able) to give his CGI fantasies a rest and focus on making a fun and interesting movie like the original trilogy which I loved.
Dressed to Kill (1980)
I took the Psycho similarities with a grain of salt
Although Dressed to Kill definitely does have several elements that are the same as elements of Psycho, I still really enjoyed this film. I believe that these similarities were often used to tribute the Hitchcock classic (such as the scene where the cops sum up the crime).
The main reason that I liked this movie so much is that it scared the hell out of me. This could be one of the only films that I've seen that I can say actually made me jumpy without resorting to gore or jump-out-of-your-seat techniques. The tension was built perfectly and I applaud DePalma for having the eye to pull off the suspenseful directing that he did in this picture. I just wish that he could be consistent because he tried a similar style in Snake Eyes, and he bombed.
Popeye (1980)
"I ain't no physicist, but I knows what matters."
There are two movies I have seen in which every line is good and that I can watch dozens of times without becoming the slightest bit bored. Those are The Big Lebowski and Popeye. I just saw Popeye recently for the first time in about twelve years and I can still recite it line for line from when I was a kid. I must have watched it fifty times (It was my babysitter). After I recently watched it, it was on again later that night and I watched it all the way through again. It's a fantastic movie and I'm blown away that the user rating is so low.
