Gosford Park (2001)
More like Grouseford Park
I watched this movie simply because it was nominated for so many Oscars. I don't see how it won the Oscar instead of Memento in the best screenplay category. This movie dredges along painfully in the first hour and then there is a murder. Just when you think that things are going to get interesting, it doesn't. It just dredges on for another hour. You can guess the plot almost immediately as clues are served so there won't be any real surprise in the end. There are too many characters and very little effort is made in bringing out any of them properly. The dialogue was mundane and the accent/sound recording was so bad that you couldn't make out what they were saying, half the time. This is not a murder mystery. It is not a peep into the lives of the upper and lower class societies. I endured this movie to see if it might offer something that made it worthy of its acclaim at the Academy but I failed to see it. Must miss!
Memento (2000)
Brilliant
A man's plight with short term memory loss is told so brilliantly that the audience is put in his shoes trying to grasp the situation. The story is told backwards - from finish to start. So, with each new information, you find yourself putting together the pieces of the puzzle to make sense of the story. Hence, total involvment in the story is achieved. Scenes are often repeated but only to explain the scene better. You'll be watching this movie again and again anyway. Just like our hero, you won't know who to trust and the ending will surprise you. A very entertaining movie. 9/10.
Contagious (1997)
way too slow paced with a dead plot
The movie never picked up momentum. Bad performance from most of the actors. Looked more like amateur theatre. And the music score in dramatic scenes for eg. while rescuing the girl from the woods was mundane. The film just lacks focus. Don't waste your time. I can't believe Paramount bought this movie.
