A moving Indie film
1 September 2012
An indie film to admire whether you're into every day Venice (like me), art (Bosch's Garden of Earthly Delights in the Prado of Madrid), an English art historian's comments on life as she dies from throat cancer, or a bit of skin (they are both very fit). This little indie film made in the ultra-realism style is extremely complex and moving but enjoyable. You can understand her trauma as a young woman faces death but wants to share everything she's learned and thought with the viewer and her lover. So she takes a romantic trip to the end enjoying every whim. Near the end she has a soliloquy on what has life become from thousands of years ago to modern life noting, "God has been replaced by entertainment".

What a waste.... Only eye candy (and limited at that)
17 September 2007
Such a waste. The whole of the Château of Versailles as a backdrop for this film. Great period costumes. And then...........slow, boring, inappropriate music trying to place MA in the 21st century. It starts off well showing the difficulties of 18th Century life in the court of Versailles, but then tries to Americanize the experience of the young MA as though living in Hollywood in the Paris Hilton age. Total disgust. The plot slows down to show the ennui of the palace life and probably distorts it as well. The few accurate historic lines (recorded and repeated often in French history classes) just barely rectify the situation. KD is of course beautiful and maybe appropriate for the role but the script and music and length lose everything!

Certainly not the best Poirot....maybe the worst
1 September 2007
We were saddened to see an excellent Agatha Christie story ruined by such bad direction and acting. David Suchet as Inspector Japp was the only nice touch. In fact whenever he was on screen he stole the show. Peter Ustinov was good, but all the overacting around him actually diminished him. Faye Dunaway and the rest of the cast overacted. I guess they were trying to parody the English impression of boisterous Hollywood types (maybe they are right for that). And why portray Hastings as such a pitiful fop. The bad tone was set in the first 5 minutes with the David Frost interview and character interaction. If we had known the whole movie was going to continue on such a bad trend we would have stopped it.

Kavanagh QC: In God We Trust (1997)
Season 3, Episode 6
a uniquely bad episode
7 April 2006
sadly this is a uniquely bad episode. John Thaw is a great mystery leading man, but unfortunately the writers have heaped on this episode all the stereotypical US southern justice problems, i.e. death penalty, wrongful conviction, biases, racists, etc. The trial and appeals are badly flawed and give the appearance that US death sentences are rush to judgment affairs with limited appeals and shoddy workmanship by all. This may have been true many decades ago but in the last 10-20 years ago it just doesn't work like that.

sad for such a good actor and generally good scripts. i highly recommend all the rest of this series as portraying the real problems of the criminal bar and criminal trials. never fun. it is always difficult to make sure justice is done.

nice movies can win at Cannes
7 September 2004
It is impressive that a nice movie can win at Cannes. Even a charming movie. Critics that look for action and great acting are missing the boat on this very nice film. We need more movies like this one and fewer movies that try to move through apocalyptic adventures to test the viewers thrill quotient.

We can all learn from a film like this.

The colors of autumn and the interplay in a house "with history" of two men "with history" and one or two ladies make this thoroughly enjoyable.

Don't miss it on netflix.

enjoyable from start to finish

a great military comedy. refreshing and very well acted by all. the story is obvious but the approach could benefit some newer movies. very limited "special effects" keep the action on the acting and rewards the viewers with great actors: Savalas, Eastwood, Sutherland, and O'Connor shine.

must see at least twice
26 July 2001
the story is too complex for a single viewing. a classic comedy with quirky characters. it takes time to appreciate all the nuances in the movie about life and the human struggle to succeed.

the hero and his followers are on the brink of success often, only to be jerked back to ground zero and have to start again.

abounds in philosophy and wisdom...like Homer intended.

very high quality.

Where do we find this gem? Now!
19 March 2001
We saw this on cable about a year ago while idly zapping around. Although i was very young when they were in their prime, the music brings back rich memories.

The film is such a gem. a film done in the rough b/w 50's style about a modern musical great (listen to FoodTV's Multo Mario - that's Louis Prima music!).

New Orleans has always produced great music via a blending of cultures. Louis is certainly among the greats representing the large Italian population in NOLA. Louis Prima and Keely Smith excelled at combining swing, jazz, and comedy.

My only gripe is having seen this once, I want to see it again and again but can't find it anywhere. Can anyone help???
