Cocktail (1988)
Great.....to me
8 May 2000
I've read and heard all of the gripes that people have had with this movie since the 80's. Give Tom a break. He did Rainman and Born on the Fourth of July right after Cocktail, so he made up for it. Personally, I love this movie. Nobody was trying to make movie history or trying to win any Oscars with this movie (except for maybe the Beach Boys). Brown is loveable and hateful as Coglin. Shue and Cruise have a realistic chemistry, not all starry eyes and smiles like most hollywood romances. I actually found them appealing and not nauseating like most movie romances. (Titanic for one.) And, if you can't find any other reason to watch this movie, do it for the poems and the waterfall scenes.

The best film adaptation to ever grace the screen.
21 December 1999
I read "The Green Mile" about a week before the movie opened here. About 60 pages from the end I began crying for the 3rd time since I had begun reading it. I did not stop crying until ten minutes after I finished the book. The book is completely compelling and touching. I consider it to be one of the best fiction books that I have ever read. I was not sure if the movie would be able to live up to what I had seen in my mind while reading. On the Friday it opened, my fiancee and I went to the first showing. 3 hours and 10 minutes later, the two of us emerged, tear stained and even closer to one another than ever before. Frank Darabont and cast have created a miracle of their own in this work. The movie captures every emotion that Stephen King intended to be caught. Emotions that I was never aware that could be caught on film. I have seen reviews and heard opinions about this movie. Most agree with me, masterpiece, work of art, and so on. However, there are some people who think that this movie is self-indulgent, over-done, and way too long. Ironically enough, these are the same people who absolutely adored "Titanic", which was self-indulgent and far too caught up in it's own grandiose image. It was also a 3 hour movie, and it did not capture in those 3 hours any of the emotion that the Green Mile captures within the first 30 minutes. Tom Hanks, Michael Duncan (Bear, to those who saw "Armageddon")David Morse, and Bonnie Hunt all helped bring to life this absolutely compelling, stunning, and emotionally wrenching picture. Bravo to Darabont and cast for a beautiful job. If this, like the equally wonderful "Shawshank", is snubbed at Oscar time, it will be a disgrace to the movie-making business.

Teacher's Pet (1958)
An often ignored classic
30 September 1999
I first saw Teacher's Pet when I was six years old. I'm a mere 19 now, and I still love this movie. Clark Gable was, is, and always will be the epitome of the word "star" Even though this film was almost 20 years after Gone With The Wind, Gable is still handsome and charismatic as the jagged, disagreeable, stubborn reporter. Gig Young and Mamie Van Doren help Gable to push this movie into the classics hall of fame. A definite must see for all viewers.**** out of ****

The mother of all cartoons
26 August 1999
I need to get something off of my chest. South Park is, has been, and always will be, an adult cartoon. I have read reviews that said that this movie is not appropriate for children, yada, yada, yada. WAKE UP CALL!!!!! This movie was not aimed at children!! South Park is aimed at those who are emotionally and intellectually ready for one of the funniest adult movies of all time. Yes, it's vulgar, nasty, crude, racist, sexist and downright offensive to those who are faint at heart. But, for the rest of us, it is the shining jewel in the crown of movies this summer.

Mystery Men (1999)

Fantabulous!!!
26 August 1999
Anyone who didn't enjoy this movie needs to get a grip. This movie is great. This summer I have been forced to sit through the Phantom Menace 3 times, the Wild Wild West once, and even a trip through "The Haunting". Along with South Park, Mystery Men takes the cake at being the best. Those who said that they hated this movie completley missed the point. This movie is supposed to be a mockery of all of the superhero movies that drain us of our money every summer. That's why the "real" super hero, Captain Amazing, had sponsors for crying out loud!! He looked more like a NASCAR driver than a superhero. (By the way, whoever it was that didn't "get" what happened to dear Captain Amazing had no business commenting on this movie in the first place.) Anyway, this movie is full of subtle and slap in the face humor. Garofalo and Azaria are at their finest (Azaria has been a personal favorite ever since "The Birdcage") Even Stiller has some great moments. Macy is the shining star of this movie though. Please do yourself a favor, and watch this movie. It is a score for great movie making in a summer of mediocrity.

What were they thinking?
26 August 1999
Let me start this by saying that I love Kevin Kline and Will Smith. Kline is hands down the best comedic actor of the 90's. Will Smith has been near and dear to my heart since Bad Boys. However, when they both agreed to make this movie, I believe that Pheobe Cates and Jada Pinkett Smith should have had both of them committed. This movie is one of the worst ones that I have ever had to sit through.(But I haven't seen Universal Soldier the return yet either, so don't quote me on that) There is practically no action, the plot is ridiculous, and what really makes it sad, is that the cast had what it takes to make a great movie, unfortunatley, the script did not.

A true celebration of womanhood
21 April 1999
I'm going to go out on a limb and not rave about this movie simply because it has one of the finest men in Hollywood. This movie truly explores the powerful bond between women, and leaves you with the knowledge that the female friendships of the world are stronger than any love affair ever could be. This film is made for those who truly understand what it is to be a woman and a friend.

Not as bad as some think
20 April 1999
Okay, I'll be the first to admit that this is nowhere near as good as Boyz in the Hood, however, it's not as bad as some make it out to be. The acting is somewhat lacking, but the story as a whole is moving. If you're a diehard Singleton fan, or are just in the mood for a pretty decent movie, go for it, you've got nothing to lose.

A musical masterpiece
20 April 1999
This is unarguably one of the best musicals of alltime. While lacking in musical talent, Marlon Brando brings the character of Sky Masterson to life. Frank Sinatra is nothing short of wonderful as "Nathan, Nathan, Detroit" and Vivian Blaine is the scene stealer as Adelaide. This movie is timeless and should be seen by all.
