Runaway Car (1997 TV Movie)

Even a brain-dead would go away!
24 June 1999
To call this anything at all would be an insult to everything else. Some expletives might describe it, but still too positively. Normally one ignores this kind of rubbish, but it was so stupid that one can but despair. Would have though that even Americans and commercial TV-stations would have given this piece of s**t a miss. But as the Germans say: Gegen die Dummheit kaempfen die Goetter selbst Vergebens!

Honest, down-to-earth story from the German occupation of Norway.

Well done, tradesman-like camera-work and fascinating story (I don't know if it is a completely true story) of the problems facing the armed forces in Norway during the German invasion in 1940. Compelling story-line makes it a well worth experience, with solid acting by Espen Schønberg and the rest of the cast.

Charming and entertaining story, exquisitely filmed.

An unpretentious story of a girl's search for her past, with a strong and interesting cast, filmed in some of the most scenic parts of the world. Quiet humour and focus on little details makes a fairly simple story into an exquisite film. I guess it helps to speak Norwegian, because subtleties in the dialogue is lost in the subtitles. Helge Jordal is just marvellous as Bork.

Excellent attempt to film ephemeral story.

Some stories are near-impossible to put on the screen, but this attempt is both honest and well done. Hamsun's fine rendition of his plight in early years to make it as writer is conveyed with insight and artistry.

Only being THERE beat this movie!
10 May 1999
I have seen this movie more times than any other (except Citizen Kane which I had to analyse in detail for uni-assignment). The film conveys Mowat's wry and quiet humor, and every time I re-view this movie I am stunned by the poesy in it. For someone who generally feels that one viewing of an American movie is one too many, this one shows that they can make good stuff. Albeit they don't make a habit of that. Yes, the plot and the storyline are pretty well non-existent, but this is more like sitting in front of a great painting. You feel it with your eyes and your mind.
