Brivido giallo: A cena con il vampiro (1989)
Interesting idea...could have been better
This film was disappointing. As a rule of my own, I never like comedy mixed with vampires - 99% of the time I think it fails, and does on this occasion. One slightly redeeming quality was the Dorian Gray sub-plot, but even this failed to help the film along.
Bloodless and not funny at all. One for collectors only.
Dr. Phibes Rises Again (1972)
Who said this was worse than the prequel??!!
Although I have heard this film being joked upon many a time, I decided to make up my own mind about it....and I'm sure my Victoria would agree with me when I say that this blend of camp humour and horror were marvellously combined into a really enjoyable romp. Once again, we see Vincent Price splendidly portraying the evil Dr Phibes, but I couldn't help thinking that the scriptwriters had refined his sadistic, yet witty, sense of humour for this one. I'm not going to give away any of the plot lines here, just see this film if you haven't already...it made me laugh more than once, especially with Phibes' rendition of "Somewhere Over the Rainbow" at the end. A camp horror classic!
Subspecies: The Awakening (1998)
Interesting....
This movie, I found, was a fascinating one. From the very opening titles, we get a feel for what has happened in the previous 3 installments...but is the best yet to come?? Well, I reckon it just might have done. Enjoyable is the somewhat "Star Trekkie" crossover between this series of movies, and the main characters from 'Vampire Journals', especially Johnathon Morris as Ash. Anders Hove is, once again, excellent as the evil vampire, Radu. Surely, the Subspecies "quadrilogy" of movies should be given recognition as probably the best contribution to the vampire genre this decade.
Doctor Dracula (1983)
I need to take a blood sample....
Not a very well known title in my native UK, but then anything which isn't a Hammer Dracula isn't well known over here. Having just recently watched Doctor Dracula, and knowing nothing about the format I thought this had to be a TV-Movie. While enjoyable, there are some really hammy lines in the dialogue. The character, Svengali, has to steal the show, if even for that beard!
On the whole, this is quite an enjoyable presentation, with an occasional appearance from the soundman's boom, and very little blood. Found the ending quite original though...who would have thought of destroying ..Al Adamson obviously.
El gran amor del conde Drácula (1973)
Dracula V 4 young women
This film is one of the classic Spanish vampire tales, starring Paul Naschy as Count Dracula. This is considered to be his best performance as a vampire - Naschy having played vampires in other movies. The setting of an old sanitarium is very atmospheric, together with the strange things which go on there. Four unwary young women end up having to spend the night there, three become vampires, the fourth becomes Dracula's lover. The supporting cast is strong, although the ending is a little unusual, with Dracula committing suicide on a stake. See this if you can, it's better than most European vampire films of the 70's.
